My Uncle pre ordered one of the first Rover SD1's off the production line in 1976. It was P reg 2.6lt & when he brought it to show the family i was mesmerised by it as a young lad. Quite large & the shape of a car i had never seen before. Sadly the colour of it was a typical Leyland colour (chocolate brown with fawn & brown interior). Who would have though of putting the instrument panel in a box & then placing it on the dash board for ease of access. Brilliant. Never the less in later years i have driven many SD1's while working for a garage & I loved them & owned one for about a year. That was a manual 3.5lt Vitesse in red with grey interior & a longer instrument panel. With the words Vitesse in white sticker format on the whole length of the lower doors. Black rubber spoiler on the tail gate. It was a monster. A reg

I live in Portugal and these cars very rarely come up for sale but I found a 2600 mk1 the other day which was finished in gold and was totally original. From previous experience of Portuguese cars their should be very little corrosion due to no salt on roads in winter. Having owned two 3500 in the eighties I am so tempted as it's only 5500 euros but what's putting me off is trying to get parts from the UK .at the moment I have a MK5 cortina and prior to Brexit getting bits from the UK was not a problem but now it can be a nightmare so that may be a reason for not going for the Rover. Love watching your videos and watching the progress on the rebuilds.will follow this one and see what horrors you uncover.

Excellent video. I had the moonraker Blue vitesse manual of this, which I purchased from the main dealer near Heathrow Airport years ago. Mine had the factory vitesse decals logo running along the bottom of the doors. I also went on and purchased the new 800 series vitesse in nightfire red with a manual box. It also came with a full leather interior. At 22,000 miles, the clutch failed, which caused catastrophic gearbox damage. The car was transported to the dealer, who repaired the vehicle under warranty. However, before being repaired, Austin Rover in cowley sent engineers down from the factory to look at the internal parts that failed that had all been laid out for inspection. The result was a brand new replacement factory gearbox and clutch. When I collected the car after this repair, I hadn't got 3 miles from the dealer when it broke down again. Depressing clutch to engage gear but no forward motion. Car was transported back to the dealer and, upon inspection, found that the driveshafts had popped out due to incorrect oil seals being fitted!! I couldn't believe it to be honest. I hope you can restore your classic car.

The issue may well be fuel but it is interesting that the the rev counter drops to zero as the engine dies, the rev counter works off the low tension side of the ignition system so if that stops then so will the rev counter and the sparks at the spark plugs. Having said that I can't think what sort of ignition fault you could have that would allow idle but then die as the revs go up. (I did have a stock ignition coil that caused something similar but at much higher RPM). All the engines that I build now have a 'locked out' dizzy and run with a programmable MSD 6530 system, the difference between any of the standard systems and an MSD is 'shocking' !!!!

Oil Pressure light is on. This is linked to the sensor on the sump/lower side of engine which needs 3lbs/sq in of pressure before turning the fuel pump (immersed in the tank) on. This can be bypassed with a piece of wire (I think it's a two position switch, one to low oil pressure indicator the other to the fuel pump). I had to do this by the side of the road once. @nitrosilvia Жыл бұрын
Yeah they are well known for it. The combustion gases go past the rings into the crank case. Then they blows crappy oil mist which collects and bakes in the flame tray stopping the pressure from escaping and continually pressurises the crank case. Then it lifts the tin foil gasket up. Doesn't do it so much on the later composite gasket ones as they are stiffer and have a different breather.

According to Babvvo and Tebbvo laws, sadly soon all combustion cars and trucks including classics will be banned from public streets in entire EU and Scandinavia :-( In Germany the Green Peoples Party gave order to shorten fuel supply from 2025 on by reducing all conventional fuel stations to only one state operated central gas station per city or county. Car washs will be forbidden too because they are climate killers, now they want to slow down all the gas station pumps from 20 litre per minute to 2 litre per minute...From 2027 on in the EU certain car spare parts will be banned too....as exhaust systems, turbo chargers and even some engine and gearbox oils...California and New York will do the same from 2027 on.... So no investments should be done in oil burning cars any longer....They even created a new kind of crime here, called emissions and smoke crime!!!

Nope, i need it to stay that way in case the diesel doesn't make it to the show and then this goes instead as a 'barn find'. Its taking all my self control not to clean it!

I'm enjoying this series but, for the love of $DEITY will you please invest in a tripod! Watching your camera constantly swinging around from side to side and up and down is like watching through the eyes of a drunk. Just keep the camera still and move whatever you're showing us into shot. Then I can stop taking the sea-sickness pills!
