The Rover SD1 has been one of the most fascinating cars I've known about since I saw Jeremy Clarkson drown in one on Top Gear (or try to drown in one), A V8 with a carb that was designed in the 1950's. All these unusual solutions for situations. It's nothing like ANY of the V8's I've worked on. All these strange styling cues and a Hand Choke... on a "Luxury Car" yet. Most cars I worked with had an electric choke. Dude, I am loving this series. Lots of good stuff here. I wish you the best of fortune to getting this rust bucket back to it's former glory. Best wishes from across the pond.

Thanks Steve. Yes the engine is basically a 1950’s Buick small block. But it’s alloy with liners so a fair weight saving. The year after this car was built they went to auto choke.

Just happened across this car and your channel a few days ago - absolutely loving it! When I was a kid this was the car my dad drooled over more than any other (well the vitesse mostly, but I think the mk1 V8 S is an even cooler car - just love it). Can't deny I was moderately horrified by the dizzy cap refurbishment tool, but that was more than offset by your intent replacement of the cruddy old oil. As an oil change fanatic I'm always appalled by old dormant engines being forced to run and rev on ancient oil - makes my arse twitch. Really great stuff, can't wait for the next installment, thank you!
@nitrosilvia

Thanks Steve. Yes so many people doing barn find/first start videos dont even put oil in the bores or check for oil pressure. Im always curious to see what they do with the cars long term. Oil change is covered in next video. To be honest the old oil wasnt even that bad!

Great channel and brought back memories. I had three SD1s back in the eighties. Two 2.6 MK1 and MK2 and a 2.3. Never had a V8 though. Loved them all, but do remember having to keep a cup in the glove box as it used to fill up every time it rained. Keep up the good work. Take care, Jeff

Please correct me if you disagree but, in my experience, if fuel is leaking out of the carb bowl overflows then in means that the float needles are not sealing properly. Even the rubber bulb should not be able to generate enough fuel pressure to overcome a correctly sealing needle. You usually have a better chance of achieving a good seal with the viton tipped needles you referred to in the previous video. 👍 Richard

yea your right dont do that you only need to scale the tips thrashing it with a rotary wire brush will wreck it and likely add track lines in the cap for the spark to follow hence why they are smooth inside ht will follow any easy path ! and dont file a rotor arm just rub the contact surface on your tyre

DON'T DO THAT to your dizzy cap. There, I said it. Yes I was cringeing when I saw that.🤨 The rotor contacts are a certain distance from the rotor for a reason. If you wear away the contacts the spark won't jump across. Gently use a small flat blade screwdriver to lift the corrosion off the contacts.

Excellent stuff James and you are right re Lucas. I always laugh at the idiots who spout the Lucas Prince of Darkness rubbish as they probably used cheap crap parts in their cars and then blamed Lucas/BL when they failed or didn't last very long. I always used Lucas or Unipart stuff in my BL cars because I knew the cheap stuff from the Motor Factors etc was rubbish and wouldn't last long - I know that the classic Mini experts used to tell people not to use cheap points etc in these cars because they would burn through them in no time - probably the same for all BL cars. I always looked after and serviced my own cars so that is probably why they were always so reliable and no cheap parts on them like would happen if they had been serviced in a local garage etc.

or is that just all natural sound deadening?
@nitrosilvia
@nitrosilvia Жыл бұрын
Hahaha it probably would work as sound deadening, but would add to aerodynamic drag, so ultimatley it will have to go. The reason i havent cleaned it is that it is acting as a stand in car for the NEC classic show end of March. If the rover sd1 2400 diesel isnt painted in time, then i will take this and it will be in a barn find/yard find state, so it needs to retain the moss. SO it looks like a genuine barn find, not ones of theses staged ones that some peple produce
