85% of the reason I'm here is that as a mechanic, I love watching old-school transmission guys tear these things down like nothing, throw the parts in a big pile, and then build them back up knowing exactly where everything goes. Stellar work as always.

Your Dad deserves many props for his experience. I've rebuilt a handful of Allison transmissions, mostly old AT-540s. They're not simple by any means, but very much less complicated than the newer ones. I always used a version of his labelled board. Without it they would have quickly been just a pile of parts.

Watched the whole thing and saw no manual "Transmissions for Dummies" anywhere. I know nothing about transmissions but found this mechanic extremely entertaining and educational. Hope he passes even just a part of what he knows on to the next generation.

You remind me of my late uncle. He always threw everything into a pile and knew what every bolt went to when he put it back together. Accent included too.

I really hate when every B.S. session about cars always ends up in nitrous oxide injection ( cheating ) I always tell them they need to do it the old fashion way. I love it though when I hear of someone talking about putting nitrous injection in their car and by the time they ran out their first bottle they managed to melt all their pistons.

have yall ever done the 62TE trans? Usually found in the Dodge/chrystler/VW minivans? Just had to get rid of my van as it lost the torque converter and ate 2nd gear up and they wanted 5k for a replacement trans. just wondering if it was rebuildable or like our local shop said "just junk and replace"

It took a real imbecile to use torx bolts on the bell housing. BUT, if you strip one out, removing the bolt is not so hard. You MUST use a very hard and very sharp drill bit. Use a bit that is larger than the bolt. It takes about 1 minute to drill it out. All you do is drill off the bolt to the shoulder, and the shoulder pops off. Leaving enough of the original bolt to grab with your fingers and spin the bolt out when the bell housing is removed.

Crazy, 1. Who designs a transmission 2. I couldn’t repair a transmission no matter how long I went to class to darn complicated. I would end up with boo coo parts left out 3. My hats off to this fella. Personally I would wear gloves the chemicals in the trans oil will absorb thru his skin not healthy Lastly he better be making $45 and hour with full benefits

@@mikedavis199 i wouldnt be so sure, if he is the business owner then probably. if he is employed by someone and making money for them he's going to be between 26-36/hr, and may not have very good bennys if its a small biz. i think guys like him should be worth 100/hr plus as long as their skill is in demand (if they can get it).

Man, I work for a company that does aaa, I run light service, with various trucks, but one of them is a ‘13 Chevy 1500, 4.3 with what I assume is a 4L60e, a few months ago, a “pump” went out, it overheated to about 270 according to my coworker, they replace said pump, send it? A couple months later it’s doing well, and I was driving on the interstate, and the radiator started shitting into the trans lines, I limped it about 40 miles and it held around 220-240 degrees, they replaced that, flushed it and gave it back, then I drove it 4 days, babied it, cruise control at 70 and it would run 210-235 degrees then it started going into a limp mode, took away 1st gear and overdrive and finally left me with either 2nd gear or 3rd by itself, moral of the story is, rebuild the whole damn thing the first time or it’s just gonna eat shit on you lol, thanks for reading and I look forward to maybe a couple opinions, meanwhile every ford truck I’ve driven never gave me a hard time maybe a harsh 1-2 shift here and there? But I can’t believe the fragility of a Chevrolet transmission!!!! Lol

Also the chev carries around 30 car batteries and has been run around 200-400 miles a day, 160 on the interstate mostly in the morning and evening
