@Josiah Mxso Do yourself a favour and get one that's about mid price range, so 300-400$ (Or £ in my case), as usually you can something of guaranteed quality without breaking the bank in that price range.

First off this is amazing, brings me back to when I first actually saw the game itself. Secondly, I don't even own a bass yet I can't get out of the rabbit hole help! In all honesty though, the game itself actually made me want to pick up the bass guitar. I guess the last thing is, you're underrated, a great creator and well yeah. P.s. Do you have any tips for new players trying to pick up the instrument?
@veiledAutonym
@veiledAutonym 5 жыл бұрын
Oh gosh, I'm certainly flattered. Thanks for the complements! As for advice on getting started... You got to get an instrument in your hands and you have to *play*. doesn't matter what, doesn't matter if it sucks, you have to actually start or it'll never happen. You'll want an entry-level instrument, something that's good enough to be worth playing but not so expensive you feel guilty about the thing you're supposed to enjoy. The Ibanez I'm playing above is a good example, though the 3/4 scale Mikro is meant for kids / smaller persons. The full size jumpstart kit retails around 250, you can find it cheaper if you go secondhand (saw one today on ebay for 99$). A lot of people who start trying to play give up, so there's always a bunch floating around. Your goal should be to not be another one of them. You want a practice amp at least, something like a 10W. The Jumpstart kit has one. You don't need anything bigger or better until you get the basics down, for now, it's just important that you can hear what you play. Metronome, tuner, you could buy things like that, but I just use free phone apps. Basic equipment shouldn't be crap, but you don't need The Best. You can upgrade later when you feel limited by the instrument / amp, when you get good enough you can recognize it's flaws. If you feel good enough to perform for an audience, it's probably time to think about upgrading past the beginner equipment. And you *gotta* play. A lot. You'll need to learn the basics of how the instrument works, of course, and tutorials are invaluable, but the real key is time and effort. That's all talent is: the result of time and applied effort. Not to say that all playing is equally worthwhile. Random doodling and hitting notes without thought or tempo is better than not playing at all, but not by much. it is, thoguh a good way to see how you're improving in a general sense, as over time your random notes start to sound like actual riffs and melodies as you figure out what works and what doesn't. Playing scales over and over is great for your body to learn the act, to build musical fundamentals, but can be boring. Playing songs you love can be fun, but repetitive and doesn't' stretch your skills out. I recommend a mix of all of them. If you play for an hour a day, and split that hour up with some scales to get started, a few runs through favorite songs, learning a new bassline, and then end with randomly playing whatever comes to you. Here's the thing, if you spend 1 hour a day practicing, you'll be better than me in a year, easy. Make that two, three hours a day? You'll be competent in no time. If you can practice 8 hours a day for a year, you'll be a pro, assuming you force yourself to push the limits of your skills. Time plus applied effort.

@@veiledAutonym certainly not the advice I was expecting, but definitely good advice nonetheless. I'm attempting to go to a physical guitar shop and going to pick up a relatively cheap bass. Although life, money, and the fact I'm still only a high schooler hinders that a bit- but thank you, once I do get one, I'll try to practice as often as possible. I've been into music for a while, so I'm excited for the opportunity to learn more!

@@proximitychan8816 It's never too late to start. I first picked up a bass at the age of 28! If I have any other advice, it's to find an excuse to play. find a local jam session, or a make a band with your friends, or see if there's a jaz band at your school, anything. Something you can schedule and make a part of your life you aren't supposed to skip. Also, youtube is great for learning a lot of things, when you can't play, read and watch and learn. For theory I recommend the youtube channels of 8-bit music theory, Adam Neely, and 12-tone, but there's TONS of videos on the real basics. Learning music has been incredibly fulfilling to me, I hope you enjoy the ride.

Well I'm not sure if you remember me or not, but according to KZbin here, a month ago I told you I wanted to learn bass. So I've decided update time! I actually just got a bass guitar this morning (its 10:58 PM at the time of writing this) and I've gotta say.. my fingers hurt lol. But I love the instrument! Thanks to the power of the internet I've figured out how to play the 7 nation army riff, it's still kinda choppy mind you, but it's a start. I'm excited to learn more. Now why am I posting this here? Well, it may not seem like it, but your advice really did motivate me to want to learn, the fact that someone actually took time out of their life to help a kid from Missouri get a guitar makes me feel good about the music community uwu Anywho I suppose that's all I got, all I can say is thanks I suppose. :P

Oh man, that's... thank you! I'm kinda stunned right now, I'm so happy you're going through with it! I make these videos for myself, or sometimes for friends to enjoy... I never considered the possibility that I might end up inspiring someone. Enjoy, and keep pushing my dude. You'll keep learning, even if sometimes it feels like you've hit a wall. You just gotta keep pushing. If you ever get stuck, my advice is to try something different. If learning to cover songs starts to drag, try scales. If scales start to bore you or don't seem to be improving, try improvising over a backing track. Try Jazz licks. Try metal Riffs. Keep an open mind and keep playing, and you'll probably pass my own ability in no time at all!

Ibanez Mikro short scale bass. It's a pretty decent "budget beginner" level instrument. Probably not the best to start out with unless you're on a tight budget and really want that shorter scale.

Every tab I found online suggests that too, saying it's A-C-A, A-B-A, but I tried and listened to the original song ripped out of the game and I'm 99% sure it's A-C-G, A-B-A. It doesn't sound right, A-C-A sounds better and more "correct", but it's not what's played in game. I think.

tuning? I tried playing it in standard EADG tuning and it sounds wrong, but it might be the difference in amp modes or something. this is really great by the way!!!
@veiledAutonym
@veiledAutonym 5 жыл бұрын
The tabs (and my playing) are in standard EADG tuning. I used a mostly clean signal with a bit of reverb. Dunno why it would sound wrong for you... I'm using a 3/4 scale bass so the intonation is a bit different than a normal bass but you wouldn't hear much of a real difference. You can check the musescore link in the description and you should be able to play it in browser to hear the bass line isolated from the backing track.

Question I'm a beginning bass/electric player so my question is: is this song easy or hard
@veiledAutonym
@veiledAutonym 4 жыл бұрын
It's not really hard, but not 100% dead simple beginner easy. It was a stretch for my fairly novice bass skills, and pushed me further. The musescore link in description can be used to play just the bass line for practice, and has both tabs and sheet music. It's a really solid "walking" bass line which makes it a lot more fun than just playing the root note of the chord for a whole song. This song plays at a mild pace, and doesn't require fast note skills. There's a little bit of syncopation in the bridge, but overall it's a good one to help you get started as a beginner, even if it might take you a bit of work to be able to play it at full speed. Musescore stopped letting people download scores, but if you want, message me and I'll send you the file so you can turn the tempo down, which is how I started practicing this.
