Brilliant. Approach with an open mind and enjoy. The “Book” aria was fantastic. As was the final piece from Zhou Enlai. The ballet scene was nerve tingling. Well done all.

I usually dislike contemporary opera, but enjoyed this one. The music is wonderful! Kudos to the composer, the orchestra, and also all the performers. But I do have some criticisms: * The visuals are bad for television viewers. Due to the large stage, performers are often off-camera. It was impossible for me to see much of the dancing. * The TV cameras never showed the orchestra, even though the orchestra is the backbone of any opera. This was particularly annoying to me because this opera contains many unusual musical sounds, and I often wanted to see which instrument was being played. * The lyrics are terrible. It sounds as if the composer decided to hire a poet instead of a professional lyricist. What works for poetry does not always work for music, and this opera is a good example of that.

this costume is so weird.. feels like 60s Hollywood.. they should have looked up how Met Opera or Paris Opera did it

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that although some of the heavy Central European accents were a bit jarring at times, this is actually a pretty decent / imaginative production. Particularly the clever use of the elongated space etc., And I thought the Orchestra was very good. Of course, my favourite will always be the original Peter Sellars production, which I was fortunate enough to see in its ENO London 2000 revival... If you want to see a really cringe-worthy {IMO} version of NiC, take a look at the Stuttgart production from February of this year. Bizarre to say the least - just my opinion though... Copies of it can be found lurking in the darker reaches of the internet.
