I read that those watching on TV overwhelmingly gave the debate to Kennedy while radio listeners largely favored Nixon
@valerie3955
@valerie3955 2 жыл бұрын
Nixon had just injured his knee while on the campaign trail, and did the debate in quite a bit of pain, having just come out of the hospital. He was also running a fever, but was determined to do the debate. Kennedy had just come back from a week at the beach and was tanned and relaxed. People were interviewed who had watched the debate on TV and who had listened to the debate on radio. Those who had watched felt that Kennedy had won. Those who had listened felt that Nixon had won.

It's actually a bit of a revisionist exaggeration. It comes from the anecdote that Kennedy's team listened to the debate over the intercom and were worried their candidate didn't perform quite as well as they'd thought. Of course when they saw the footage they were reassured as he looked sufficiently Presidential. The truth was the debates were pretty much equal, with maybe a slight portion of audiences favouring Nixon on radio and a slight favouring Kennedy on television. I personally don't think the debates did much to move this very close election frankly.

It was a very close ..and actually questioned election outcome. I am from a family that strongly supported Nixon, so was partial to Nixon for many years. However, even if JFK were not fairly elected, and even though he was not a personally moral man, he was ideal as a statesman & as President. JFKs politics was brave, not corrupt. He truly was one of the few outstanding Presidents the USA ever had. His public stands against Freemasonry- and against the control England still has over the USA through the CIA - were no less than astounding.(So ..some important religious formation from childhood was still alive in his Presidential decision making)

@@MausOfTheHouse Not really, he sabotaged peace talks that were supposed to take place towards the end of the Johnson administration in order to increase his chances at winning the 1968 election. His disastrous economic decisions that contributed to the stagflation that heavily affected the 70s (which contributed to his successors Gerald Ford and Jimmy Carter’s loses in the 1976 and 1980 elections respectively). The southern strategy and the war on drugs. No Nixon was not a “good guy” watergate was just the straw that broke the camels back

@@anthonydiaz4803 I wouldn't call Kennedy a great president and the way he won was extremely sketchy too. But he was a very nice guy. After all he and Nixon used to be real close friends during 1950s. So it's not like liking Nixon should mean disliking Kennedy.

@@m3rl707 I mean Nixons plan regarding China was to integrate China into global economy thus making that dependent on the west plus Nixon never supported assault on the Chinese system of governance. Id blame Clinton and Reagan and Bush administrations and to a lesser extent Carter admin for trying to stage a regime change in China and thus making it stop trusting the west and for making the west much more dependent on China than China was dependent on the west. These weren't really Nixons ideas. Reagan admin led the way here.

@@user-mb3dx5fl9f that's a fair assessment. But Nixon did Preside over the start of higher gas prices, stagflation, removed the gold standard and the expansion of the Vietnam war into 2 other countries for no reason before pulling out. But I think he was an ok C tier President. Whereas JFK would be B tier and Reagan, Bush, Clinton would he C tier.
