Question? Livestock whole corn 🌽 the 50 pound yellow corn for animals is about $20.00. Is this safe for human consumption? Is it safe ? Your thoughts 😊

Field corn aka dent corn is simply corn harvested at a later time and dried instead of picked fresher. It is exactly what is used for making masa and cornmeal (but must first be nixtamalized to prevent pellegra aka niacin deficiency) as well as what is being fed to animals. They are the same thing (before it is nixtamalized for human use). Just a matter of how sanitary it is when being handled and precautions taken for what is destined for your table vs what is destined for an animal feed trough. It isn't nixtamalized yet when used for animals, so you'll have to do that yourself to avoid the potential for developing pellegra. Otherwise, it is simply a matter of its quality and sanitation. Toss any bad kernels (pick/sort through them same as you would dried beans getting rid of any bad ones, dirt clods or pebbles) and wash them well ... then nixtamalize.

By “natural lime” do they mean ash water (lye)?
@RRaucina4 ай бұрын
pickling lime. food grade. you could use builders type S lime, but there is danger of heavy metal contamination. Or use clean hardwood ash
