As much as I love Moscow and other beautiful cities, I think this would be the first city of choice. Close enough to Moscow to get in on occasion and prices here would be very reasonable. It feels very old indeed. Incredible. Old but modern. The Orthodox church is awe inspiring......makes you cry. As clean and beautiful as this city is, it is surprising the graffiti is not swept away.

В Нижнем Новгороде не только ВОЛГА, но ещё и ОКА. И то место, которое вы показывали а другом берегу называется СТРЕЛКА, т. к в том месте обе эти реки соединяются (ОКА впадает в Волгу)!!!! Приезжайте в МАЕ, вы увидите разный цвет воды этих рек при встрече на Стрелке и город будет в 100 раз ещё красивее!!!!!

old world charm with scenic beauty with lots of potential for western migrants to bring new flavours that Russians may enjoy, as far as the graffiti goes it doesnt take much to paint over a wall and with an invitation by the Russian President for this town to be opened to western immigration in gratitude and to show appreciation a group of volunteers could clean it up quickly, ..Russia is saying , here you go have a good look at this town and see how you can fit in and help it grow and beautify it...sometimes you just have to start with small beginnings

Nizhny looks like the kind of place I'd want to settle over Moscow or St. Petersburg. Visiting the other cities would be great, or maybe spending a first year in them, renting an apartment and getting acclimated. But, I'd rather live somewhere that's not as bustling and huge.

Watched a much longer driving video of Nizhny on a sunny fall day, starting from the suburbs and winding through the city pretty much end to end. From this you get the very old historic and very well planned new. Beautiful city.

In the section that you thought looked like Mexico or Cuba (which it does not), there is not a single building from the Soviet period. These are all 19th or possibly early 20th cent. classical Russian/Central European buildings. The colors that impressed you were chosen by the renovating designer, I am sure.

The graffiti is not a major issue by the look of things , the graffiti is not so visible in the city…I’ve seen major cities in Europe with graffiti everywhere. From what you have shown I like Nizhny Novgorod and there are some old beautiful buildings too , of course , some of these buildings are good for restoration .

В России эти граффити оставляют подростки хулиганы. Настоящие преступные банды таким не занимаются. Во многих городах есть «банды», но это почти всегда подростки, и они делятся по районам. Но никаких перестрелок, убийств и тому подобное. Максимум, что происходит - драки между районами, но уже лет 10 о таких случаях не слышал. В общем, эти граффити никакого смысла не несут вообще

No, the grafitti is not in any way negative toward foreigners. The regional government wants to attract tourists and residents to the area. The economic future of the area is bright and it will need people to work in industry and to support the local economy. It's a good program.

Если примете нашу культуру, язык, хотя бы на минимальном уровне, наши ценности, будете чувствовать себя в России лучше, чем дома. А граффити - это элемент молодежной субкультуры, как правило это спортивные клубы, музыкальные группы. Они не несут никакого негатива. Но за них наказывают.

Почему поощряют переезжать иностранцев. У нас пока спад рождаемости, как и везде на Западе. В России живет сейчас 143 миллиона человек при необходимом минимуме в 300 миллионов. У нас был сильный отток населения в 90-е годы, когда из-за плохой жизни многие эмигрировали на Запад. Правительство хочет вернуть тех, кто уехал, есть программы по возвращению соотечественников. И привлечь в нашу страну иностранцев, но не всех, а с похожими культурными и духовными ценностями, которые вольются в наше общество. Земли и ресурсов для хорошей жизни достаточно, конкуренции не будет. Эмиграцию из других стран, которые создают большие проблемы и не интегрируются в наше общество, живут своими диаспорами, правительство наоборот сейчас ограничивает.

@@MoscowPhotog Well more likely they will not point it on map indeed, because it is not widely known abroad as Moscow, but the fact is that Nizhny is considered as quite significant city as its population is over 1.2 million people which hardly makes it a town or village, for example Munich is 1.5 million and is considered as one of the biggest cities in Germany, or Frankfurt which is just 700 000+ (and many European capitals are twice smaller than Nizhny by population). Even by Russian standards its not a small city or town. Just cities like Nizhny or Kazan seem relatively small compared to Moscow or SPB but is still a known place within the country.
