I mean, its either a) A work, which is entirely possible, especially given that its being already said its a two month suspension and his back for the New Japan Cup. b) Didn't get it cleared prior. You can make the argument that his furthering an angle and this and that and its all totally valid, but if your going to do that, you have to either get instructed to do it, or pitch it and have it cleared. Punk didn't sit down on the stage and drop a Pipe bomb without anyone knowing he was going to do it. Joey Styles didn't eviserate WWE on WWE TV of his own back. They were both angles, to further and story and were discussed and agreed prior. In terms of show length, I think Raw can kind of be whatever now due to it being Netflix. Smackdown has to have a more rigid timeslot due to being on real TV, so I think 2 hours is best long term. 2 and half hours is cute, but I don't think its something networks really want as you have to program around it which means you need either a 30 minute or 90 minute show to pair up with it.

Honestly, watching the show I didn't think much of what Charlton had said. I thought the comments he made were clearly in-character as a NJPW loyalist. Even mid Omega/Kidd match after the spot where Gabe was powerbombed onto the table outside, hitting his head on the floor. Bryce Remsburg, the referee, was checking on Gabe as he thinks he might be knocked out and might rule it as a stoppage but on commentary Chris very angrily says "it's not for Bryce to decide" Looking at that, it's very clear to me that Chris was playing into his character of being a NJPW loyalist. Logic being "aew referee" shouldn't stop "njpw wrestler" from beating "aew wrestler". Unless you're telling me at that point in time, out of kayfabe, Chris wanted to Gabe to continue fighting even if he might have been actually concussed. Regardless his absence on the English commentary will be missed for the Goto Vs ZSJ match.

Actual NJPW viewer here, Charlton was absolutely working even if everything he said is actively a true sentiment that most modern NJPW fans share. NJPW doesn't "check" what their talent say, Kevin Kelly has stated in the past that they do not listen to English commentary at all, period. Additionally, numerous talent, both Japanese and English speaking, have cut numerous anti-AEW promos backstage all year long. Gabe Kidd, David Finlay, EVIL, Great-O-Khan, Yota Tsuji, Yuya Uemura, I could genuinely keep going on. NONE of these people have been punished, nor did any of their words get approved or not, because we know from the past that NJPW simply doesn't do this. This has lead to tons of moments where wrestlers talk about stuff that will objectively never happen and objectively are at odds with what the company wants. For instance, at least 4 different wrestlers 2 years past talked about their anger at the unification of the Heavyweight and Intercontinental titles and their plans to de-unify them, this was well after the current World Heavyweight was created; companies aren't okaying their staff to go out there and shit-talk a belt they are trying to establish during an incredibly challenging time economically. It is extremely obvious to anyone who watch NJPW regularly, which dirt sheet writers like SRS absolutely do not do, that Tony Khan, on the one night a year he decides to pay attention to this company he is sucking the life from, got mad at a work that has been going on the literal entire duration of the partnership, and is using his pressure, likely indirectly through a middle man such as Rocky Romero, to get Bushiroad to punish Charlton. A crybaby, born-into-wealth millionaire is depriving a working class man of his job. Defending this is actively defending scum.

There's a big difference. Whether he means it or not, Gabe Kidd can easily say he's in character. Especially because his character is the unhinged crazy man and he was feuding with the guy from the other company. He can play that card and they can tell him "fine but tone It down". Usually the commentators in Japan are not that hostile to other companies, so that's a little harder to believe for Chris. Especially because he's usually not that animated. He's passionate, but he was clearly out of line compared to his usual style. It felt personal, many times.

Gabe is a heel wrestler with the crazy man unhinged character, Chris is a babyface commentator who's usually very respectful of the wrestlers and wrestling in general. The only times he gets that hostile on comment is with the House Of Torture stuff. So he could say it, but they would likely not believe it. Also, commentators are the voice of the show, and Wrestle Dynasty was a co-promoted show by NJPW AND AEW. If his comments and that line of commentary wasn't cleared and AEW wasn't aware, he still went into business for himself even if he was truly only try to work an angle and this could have consequences. If that is what he says to defend himself, they can accept it and give him the benefit of the doubt, but that by itself doesn't mean he shouldn't be punished in some form, because he still didn't ask for permission and he probably made people angry by doing it which is a problem for NJPW.
