Thank you so much for bringing up these issues. I agree with you 100% on the modified top mount is really just an attempt to avoid using the term "tray mount" and that it really dosen't sound like a custom but rather a standard prebuilt mech.
@PoltergeistWorks3 жыл бұрын
How can a prebuilt board be called "custom" ? Even the stuff you put together from pieces, no matter how expensive they are, it's still not a true "custom" board unless modified in some way.

I see the nk65ee as nothing more than an entry to the world of customized keyboards because it allows some options to the user to add mods. For example I did the mods from Keybored like you mentioned and while it did improve the sound, the overall typing feel still felt cheap. The nk65ee provides a safe option for those used to gaming keyboards and prebuilt boards who want to dip their toes into this hobby and see the possibilities that it can offer. I definitely appreciate your take on this!

So people actually sometimes like tray mount they just affected by crowd to say no to tray mount - basically if you like stiff typing why you wouldn't (I don't like, but some like, I mean sound is still kinda similar-ish on tray mount as on top mount, just the feel is really super different)

Great review! Just wondering, what is your definition of a custom keyboard? Is it strictly to do with having to assemble the case/pcb construction yourself? Is having to choose your own switches and keycaps not enough to call a keyboard kit a custom? Genuinely curious
@JYMV3 жыл бұрын
I think I define custom to be something that feels premium. At the end of the day, even expensive hotswap customs are only as "custom" as a gk64. I couldn't tell you at what price point or material that happens but I know it when I see it
@utterkid23 жыл бұрын
To me, A custom is when you choose your own switches, keycaps, and when you do mods to it. While yes, you could technically call it a heavily modded keyboard, the word “custom” can be seen in many ways

I will never purchase this, but I'm endlessly fascinated by entry custom boards; any advancement at any price level benefits everyone in the hobby. Less than a year after this board first dropped and superior competitors with better price points eclipsed it. There might be a ceiling before advancement just becomes superficial and redundant, but for now, I'm enjoying it.

The one major profile that has a problem with north facing switches is Cherry profile, the profile that was literally introduced alongside the switch design. This is in contrast to south facing, which has interference issues with zero keycap profiles.

@nihalprakash88833 жыл бұрын
It's just chasing a fad. Gasket mount is the flavor of the month. But enthusiasts like to pretend that top mount is fine on the fjell because they shelled out several hundred dollars for it.
@foreverwewin3 жыл бұрын
@@nihalprakash8883 gasket mount has always been around for a long time now and has always been alot of people's preferred mounting style.
@foreverwewin3 жыл бұрын
Tray mounts provide a less consistent typing feel and are generally reserved for cheapo custom mechs, the fjell is an expensive tray mount, and it recieves alot of flak for that, but it's built really well and has quality you won't see in a tofu or something similar. Tray mounts are nice for plateless builds though.
@CatfishBradley3 жыл бұрын
People all have preferences, personally I'd rather have a nk65(tray mount) with a brass plate instead of a gasket mount nk65 with an aluminum/poly carb plate. The custom keyboard hobby is getting a lot of attention now, I think its a fair estimate to say of all comments you read on these videos (people praising/complaining about things) 75% of the commenters Haven't even built/typed on their first keyboard yet, they're just regurgitating what they heard their favorite KZbin reviewers say. (Even though those youtubers are the first people to say "It's all preference"). Just follow what makes you excited, and have some fun with it!
@foreverwewin3 жыл бұрын
@@CatfishBradley the nk65 doesnt even come with brass plates, no aftermarket plates either and it doesn't even have any other types of mounting like gasket mount, only the weird tray/top mount hybrid. I get that this hobby relies on your personal preference but if you're saying you'd rather have a regular tray mount config over gasket you probably never tried gasket mount before.

The NK65 uses north-facing sockets. I do not consider this the "correct" switch orientation. Honestly, there is no such thing, it's as subjective as sound tests, but you could certainly say north-facing is unfortunately the "most popular" orientation.

KBD67 Lite > This. Even just for superior stabs. I sold my NK65, thing was creaky, had unbalanced feet, and I hate plate mount stabs, no matter what company (tried 4). Was not impressed, and absolutely felt cheap. Also really dislike the usb on the right side. Is it a good deal? I guess...? But if you spend a little more, you get a lot more with other boards. The only pro is the price for RGB and south facing switches if you want to rock cherry style caps. Other than that... its a pass. Hard pass for the aluminum one especially. I would never pay $200+ for a board with plate mount stabs when their competitors offer pcb mount. Also, colour choices are weak for the metal one.
