I've used the same strategy for NKG for my radiant run, but one thing I found that makes it faster is using nail arts. Storing a nail art like great slash or dash slash for attacking in between his moves (like his slash upper cut or his bat attack) does double to triple the nail damage. Easy to implement since it's just holding your attack button to charge it. You might even want nailmaster charm for that strategy. Obv won't work for PV, so a small drawback using a charm for that first fight. All in all, great fight!
