3:25 when i saw this DVD, i thought that seeing a steam engine down the middle of the road was the most awesome sight ever. I always wondered how the people that werent on the screen reacted to seeing a steam giant going down the road

I hope she'll be restored soon. The only problem is that the transportation museum is having trouble with the tracks down to the State Fair.

This is the first footage I have seen in her cab. She's been out of service for too long this is my favorite mikado hopefully they do get her done this year or next she could be reunited with 765 and 763 in the future.

@Baldwin587 You are hearing NKP 624's whistle; a sister NKP Mikado on display in Hammond, IN

Love this freight hog shes always been a favorite of mine. Beautiful whistle. Interesting fact she carrys the most common type stoker ever used but to my knowledge is the only preserved locomotive to operation with a duplex stoker to run to date. The others are hand bombers or have HT stokes or another variation on the same. So shes unique locomotive in this regard.

@GoldenCreekValleyRR I don't volunteer at the ITM, but I was thinking about joining next operating season. I'd most likely volunteer on the Fairtrain if I were at the ITM, though.

@Chase1609 When 587 was retired in 1955 sister locomotive 639 was in need of tender repair. Before 587 was sent to Broadripple Park for display in Indianapolis, IN crews swapped 587 and 639's tenders. NKP 639 was retired in 1958 and is still on display in Miller Park in Bloomington, IL with 587's original, much smaller tender. To this day we do not run 587 "tender first" because when the swap was made 587's cab was not widened to be even with the new display tender.

Only if we had shops I would be such wonderful to have NKP 624 and 639.. have all three surviving Mikes..

587 is a Mikado type 2-8-2 with a tractive effort of 54,720 lbs. 765 is a Birkshire type 2-8-4 with 64,135 lbs of tractive effort. 586 has 63 inch driving wheels & 765 has 69 inch wheels.

I've never seen an engine with duplex stokers (amos and andy stoker) in operation. I've talked to old hoggers and firemen they say that they had there moments with them. I think the 4070 was equipped with the same. As I recall all or most USRA light mikes came with this equipment. Great video, and one of the best whistles I've heard.

I used to climb all over this engine when I was a kid back in the 50,s when she was located at Broadripple park in Indpls, great to see she was,nt scrapped when they built a library where she was sitting,nice to see her on you tube some 50 years later RAC Lebanon In.

What is that spinning cap thing on the left of the cab shots
@Bassfanatic9414 жыл бұрын
Wow this is an amazing video! Those shots were great! Is this train still running or was it scrapped? The cab shots are really cool. I like those side V style stokers with and the firebox door is cool too. That style cab is reminiscent of Pennsylvania Decapod style cabs. The expression on the engineer's face at :47 is funny. He was probably thinking "that was an embarrassing whistle blow!"

is the 587 a sister to the 765, or is it a differnt locomotive all together, and where is it stored, and the progress on 587?
@NEAFarmKid40106 жыл бұрын
They are working on rebuilding it, no it isn't a sister to the 765 per say, it is a 2-8-2 Mikado, whereas the 765 is a 2-8-4 Berkshire. Hopefully it'll be rebuilt soon, but I think they are running into a shortage of money, however I'm not sure.
