A tutorial on how I use the Dayton Audio IMM-6 calibrated microphone to generate and compare Frequency Response curves for In Ear Monitors with the iOS Audtiotools app by Studio Six Digital.

Hi Nikolaus, can you demonstrate this with the Android App, I've not got an i-device. This does look much better than the Audio Tool app on Android though. Better UI by far.

Old comment but audio tool is the best you can get on Android. It has pretty much everything you would need anyway

Can I measure at what decibel level I am listening to music by connecting an IEM to a tube?
@nmatheis
@nmatheis 2 ай бұрын
@@MahmutTuncer-bh2bf I haven't used that setup for quite awhile, but it should give you average dB for the file you're playing. So if you feed it your file and turn the volume up and down, you should get at least a rough approximation for how many dB you're getting at different volume steps. Fiio's app used with their BT dongles has a dB calculator where you input the sensitivity and impedance of your IEM, and it gives you the dB for whatever volume you're listening to.

There is a mistake in the measurement, FFT is used white noise, RTA is used pink noise.
@nmatheis

AudioTools makers recommend using Pink Noise for acoustic measurements, so I follow their advice. My measurements aren't exactly the same as others but track well enough that I'm confident using Pink Noise for this purpose - especially for comparative measurements...

Ok, however you should use the RTA that is between your applications.

Just to clear things up here, the OP is correct when talking about raw FFT data in almost every other case. The reason that the developer of Audio Tools recommends using Pink Noise with BOTH his RTA app as well as his FFT app is because he has purposefully scaled the raw FFT to respond to pink noise the same way an RTA does, as far as amplitude is concerned. In other words, he scales the FFT data to show pink noise as having a flat horizontal response from left to right. On just about any other raw FFT display, pink noise will have a falling response, from left to right, at a rate of 3dB per octave. On just about any other raw FFT, white noise will show a flat line, and pink will have a downward slope from left to right. But in this app specifically, it was a choice of the developer to plot raw FFT this way. So, long story short, with Audio Tools for iOS specifically, if you want to approximate the transfer function magnitude of a system using the FFT module, pink noise is in fact the stimulus to use.

Can this be dual-purpose as a tiny dictation mic? Looking for a compact 3.5mm solution for a closed MacBook Pro, which cuts internal mics when closed (security).

This mic is not designed to measure your earbuds. First of all, I don't like the tube you put on your microphone, if the device would have been designed to be used that way it would have a tube and some text and data explaining it. So, that is a no-no, you are affecting the measured sound. Don't you think you need some calculations if you are gonna use that tube? The microphone is omnidirectional and if you would have read the manual, you would see that is pretty damn good, a professional mic it is. Do you think Dayton would make a calibration file for every damn mic of those if it's not important? So, this mic is "perfect companion for audio professionals who must work on-location performing acoustic analysis, monitoring audio levels, or recording".

what? you can't be serious. yes he's created a tunnel or tube out of some random plastic but he's also made it airtight. .. as airtight as it would be in someone's ear canal. what is the effect of sound in a vacuum? You should know this.... nothing. the earbuds are playing into a vacuum and being picked up on the other end by the microphone. the sound waves are not affected by the inch of plastic tubing in any meaningful way. omnidirectionality is not an issue here because he is not blocking any part of that microphone with the plastic enclosure... the dude even says that the measurements taken from this kind of DIY setup shouldn't be considered scientific.. it's more for quick measurements for comparative purposes. the Dayton audio website says that this is for measuring loudspeakers. earbuds, in-ear monitors, headphones are the same as loud speakers .. they just have different use-criteria. he is replicating that specific use-criteria with as little impact on the measurements as he can. and he does a good job at it.

What did I just read, a whole lot of subjective and ignorant snowflake comment? It's designed to be a calibrated mic. It measures, that's it, doesn't tell you how to interpret the data. If he sets up a testing environment with as little variables as possible it can be a representative test. Seems like this is a pretty decent test environment as long as he keeps the same distance, test sound, volume etc... cheers

@@nickloss2377 Lol: A vacuum is an absence of any gas including air. No sound will travel through a vacuum. This is NOT a vacuum. The tube WILL affect frequency response but as a comparative method, this method is fine since it's the same test setup each time
