The whole state of the nVidia graphics driver (nouveau) for Linux is still sad. I have a new Lenovo ThinkPad P52s which encountered this issue with a fresh install of Ubuntu 18.10. The bug is quite maddening, as I ran from a Live DVD for a few hours before installing, and never encountered this issue. However, once booted from the internal SSD drive, the system was sluggish, unusable, and hung so many times I had to hard crash the system to get back to the Grub boot menu. I was seeing the "BUG: soft lockup" in the kernel log (dmesg) as well as kernel panic for nouveau, so I figured these issues were related. Your video is exactly the solution for my issue. I've modified /etc/boot/grub with the nouveau.modeset=0 kernel parameter, then ran update-grub to make this setting permanent. In my case, I have the Intel UHD 4K GPU which is used when nouveau is blacklisted, which is what I prefer.

Sad that this is still an issue 3 years later... thank you so much! Quick run down... Start ubuntu, press ESC to bring up the boot options, with ubuntu highlighted press 'e' on the line starting with "linux /boot/vmlinuz-*" add nouveau.modeset=0 to the end.

I formally replaced the "quite_splash" to "ecpi=force" and didn't work then I follow this method but still didn't work so i thought i should change back it to "quite_splash" and i did .Also added the "$vt_handoff" then follow your instructions,it worked like a charm...Thank you very much!!
