Best carb rebuild video on KZbin
@scottcates2 жыл бұрын
This is the best japanese carb how-to I have ever seen. I had to learn this stuff by the book and forum help 15 years ago! I might have shown how to bench sync with two drill bits but that is hardly a criticism. I've rebuilt about 100 sets of japanese motorsport carbs and I definitely learned some more from this video. I liked polishing the float valve seats with a drill -- in the past I've used a q-tip but maybe I will chuck up my q-tip in a drill for the next set I do. I just picked up my fourth zg1000 after a few years away from riding so this was a superb refresher!!
@DiamondMounter2 жыл бұрын
Hey Scott Cates please tell me... That piece he removes at 5:59 with the little dome screen on. Im fitting a rebuild kit to my mikuni carbs off my FJ1200 (this video helped loads) The main jet in the kit was 110 same as my bike but that dome thing has a different size hole. My bike had 2.3 but my new one has 1.5. How is that gonna effect my bike??

@@DiamondMounter 5:36 Removable Float Needle Seat Many carbs have permanent seats but it seems that that these seats are removable.
@scottcates2 жыл бұрын
Some guys will polish thet seats, in place with a q-tip and brasso -- or pretty much anything that you can spin inside the little bore to clean up the seat bottoms. The seat bottoms are what seal against the conical tip of the float needles. Once that seal fails, fuel can drip into the cylinder when the bike is parked, leading to hydrolock and bent rods at the next startup. It's an important step. Also important is to set float height from the Service Manual and carefully examine the little plungers on the float needles to make sure they spring back out when you press on them. Next, validate that the petcock is functional and shuts off completely when the bike is not running. Vacuum-actuated petcocks will fail after a few years of service and that is also a link the hydrolock chain.

A really excellent and comprehensive video - one of the best I've seen on carb cleaning. A point if I may - On Japanese bikes, many of the screws that look like Philips are really JIS (Japanese Industrial Standards), and there is a difference. A set of three JIS drivers is not expensive (look for the Vessel brand) and is a good investment. Your screws will thank you!

I'm glad you pointed out the choke circuit orifice in the float bowl. I had a plugged one and could not figure out why it ran so good warmed up and a dead miss when it was cold. It used to "clack" when it was cold. I found out it was the left carb on my 3 cylinder XS Yamaha so I could get at the enrichment assy. and the float bowl. That tube was plugged and not letting fuel into the enrichment circuit. Right, soak that float bowl good. If it wasn't the left carb I'd have had to take the whole shootin' match off...again.

For Re-assembly I like using Loctite Master Gasket . Sparingly , like silicone . It's an Anaerobic Sealant . Only " Sets " in the Tight section of a Join/Seal point . Any excess will either dissolve in Fuel flow or wash off with water externally . The Loctite is a bit Pricey , but only needs sparing use , and does NOT go off in the Tube . Provided you don't squeeze the Air Out .

Good video! I have to disagree with reusing the old O-rings especially for the needle seats, I have had allot of them leak and it can possibly cause overflow into the cylinder(s} and hydro lock the engine, replacing them is cheap insurance. I realize this video is a few years old, but I had the same carb sync tool you have and found it was not very accurate, I bought a Morgan carb-tune pro and get much better results.
