Holy hell, this might just be the best thing I've ever stumbled onto on KZbin. I've got a 2000 VT750 ACE that the PO swapped pipes on and the idle is lumpy, it can stumble a bit when you first tip in and the decel backfiring is amazing - guess that's why Cobra calls it a shotgun exhaust. It's still pretty cold here in Chicago, but once I can comfortably sit in the driveway and tinker, this is going to have to be my first step. Now if I could just get you to stop by and double check my work (and maybe go over my NT700, too) I'd be in hog heaven.

Hey Cody, boy am I glad I found this video. I bet you saved me a bunch of money! I have an ‘06 Shadow Spirit and I just finished the reassembly and test drove the bike. Based on your procedure for removing the Welch plugs and adjusting the carb settings, I am very, very satisfied with the results. I bought the bike with V&H Straightshots but had a problem with backfire during deceleration. I didn’t know if the bike had been jetted and the only way to tell was to inspect the jets. I needn’t tell you what that entails but I really didn’t want to go there. After finding this video, I decided to duplicate what you demonstrated and it worked perfectly. Backfire is gone and the bike runs great. It even increased the idle just like the video and I was able to dial it back down. Thanks for a job WELL DONE!!!

I worked at a shop and my boss had a neat trick for pulling caps. He would drill a pilot hole like you did in the center. He then would take a wood screw that he ground just a little of the sharp tip off. He would thread into pilot hole in cap. Take a small slide hammer with a claw foot and pop it out in one slide. Anyways, thought you might like the info. Something to try out maybe. Great video, on point. Thank you.

Just wanted you to know, I did take your advise seriously the other day about having screws turned out to far. So today... I took both Pilot screws and turn them both in till I could feel them seat. Did that two times ever so lightly. Then backed each screw out 3 1/2 turns. With cold start I pulled choke out and bike started right up running nice and smooth at fast idle. Pushed choke all the way back in. Motor idled back down running smoothly. Then turned idle screw down, went for a short ride decelerating in first gear and guest what? No more back fire!! Yea I feel so blessed right now. Thank you soooooo much!

If possible, it'd be great to see a video of this procedure on an inline 4 to hear the sounds diference between a 4 and a v-twin. A tip, I do film lighting for a living, wear long sleeves when you arms are so close to your light source. So far you have helped out a lot. I have the 1979 Limited Edition CB750K that you did the carb sync on. I had removed the baffles to discover incredible power waiting. After restoring her in Spring 2021, I had a Vintage Motorcycle co, tune so to get it past inspection. Things were okay for about a week although some deceleration backfire.. Yesterday after highspeed driving on the highway for about 5 min's, the lean symptoms showed up. I had enriched the mixtures since before. Still some deceleration backfire - so further enriched. and deceleration backfire became minimized. But after exiting the highway yesterday, when winding down to a stop, engine shut off, and idle simply would not sustain, and would need to rev her. It seemed like a manifold leak, and also the Carb No 1 was having loud backfires during idle suddenly. After limping home, with engine case @ 240 F Temp, and after cooing down, drained float boil one and injected carb cleaner directly into the Boil via its drain hole. This improved things somewhat. The Manifold Boots had been replaced, and new hose clamps tight for a screw driver but not firm for a ratchet. Just got back after some further testing, Im using STP Ultra to clean the fuel/ carb systems. Just a little back fire to watch on Cylinder 1 - Thanks again for your help and for reading this -

@@TheMotorcycleMD OK let me rephrase.. "More often than not". It can be mixture related, but again, more often than not that would entail one carb being out of sync "mixture wise". Slow return to idle is one cyl fighting to stay up as the other is dragging it back down. If both pipes show the same with an exhaust gas analyzer at idle, then it is a case of out of sync slides or butterflies.

Those individual air cleaners cost this engine of about 6% of the power..The standard airbox is designed with an effect that gives free horsepower called velocity stack effect. A velocity stack effect is, the use of a funnel shaped tube. It goes from large to small. As the air is being ingested into the engine, and it passes through a velocity stack. The air actually picks up speed and has a mild supercharger effect. It forces more air into the combustion chamber then would be pulled in without the velocity stacks. If you want to use these gause/oil air filters, Buy a stock air filter replacement and put it into the standard airbox. Do not put these individual air cleaners on unless you don’t mind losing about 6% of your horsepower..

Hi - a request please: on my 1979 Limited Edition, which you know from synching carbs, I have a luggage carrier. I would like to add a backrest, but these days no motorcycle Honda shop would be there to visit the parts department to select and purchase the correct backrest. Im interested in having one so my wife is more secured in back of me, and can feel more comfortable. Question: I noticed one on the bike you are working on. At Amazon the closest I can come to one is for a Harley. Im not sure if the mount points share the same width was what I have on my luggage carrier where it would mount from. The Harley version was $75.00. Do you happen to have a spare backrest laying around that I could retrofit onto my 750. If reasonable, would be pleased to purchase it, and pay for shipping. Meantime I really enjoy your channel. I just would like to see you put my bike model on its center stand - thanks - PS - Also if you have spare OEM exhaust for 750 79-81 please advise - thanks

What if I want backfire under deceleration but still want that smooth idle and quick throttle? I like the backfire, don't really want to get rid of it.

Obox Never heard this one before.... you would need to run it lean or plug up any air cut valves that bike has. This will more than likely change your throttle response and smooth idle..

Have a 1989 VT600 w/16000m on it. Have deceleration backfire. Local Honda wants to rebuild carbs and has made no mention of simply adjusting them.. In watching this video it appears that you're dealing with a single carb (?) and my VT600 has duals. They want $800 to rebuild and tune. Comments?

thanks bro. I've spent 7000 miles shooting pow pow at the neighbor's cause (A) I'm too cheap to get the carbs worked if it's running. (B) My crappy VT750CD had no visible carburetor adjustment. It's not backfire. It can be deceleration popping or exhaust overrun, but backfire is when it (get this) fires backwards. That means out through the carbs. Know what you're talking about first. Then he says "back pressure" lmao. That's almost strictly a myth. Watch Engineering Explained go into detail about to.

Hi Cody, Good evening, A'm having a problem that's tricking me out man on a VZ800 Marauda a 1997 carburetor model: Here's the situation fuel tank had sludge/sediment, clean & coated tank, clean cabs entirely 3 times, bike was working on rear cylinder before & after service, troubleshoot electrical, fire reaching plugs, front cylinder still not firing, remove plug on ft/bank again check for spark, plug firing but orange spark, recheck cabs, clean & check float needles, fuel reaching cabs, fire it up again, it starts on front cylinder, rear stops takes a while & gets warm but not very hot, give it a little trottle it's breaking up really bad, & I have to keep the choke out @ all times even though all jets are thoroughly cleaned. Can you shed some light on this problem please.....Thanks in advance!!!

In the event that I remain unable to purchase a "pilot screw wrench" compatible to my bike ('07 Honda Shadow 750) are there any substitute tools that can be used? My bike doesn't have a welch plug but the air/fuel mixture screw is not accessible because I cannot find a pilot screw wrench that would allow access to the mixture screw. Hopefully I can use a different tool that would minimize the risk of unintended damage.

lol so many little things now make sense... Came here to adjust a Kawasaki dirt bike carb because I had that lingering high idle before it would get back down to idle plus the little pops, (LEAN) but I just happen to also have a Shadow Spirit 750, wich does little carb backfires when its cold... but once the engines warm its completely fine.. SO I might not touch the shadow.. Its a little confusing.. SOmetimes its lean sometimes Its dumping black smoke like a diesel truck, sometimes its fine.... maybe I will.. Nah **** it I'll leave it and go do dirt bike things today. (this is why everything takes so long for me) lol

I have now spent so many hours and money on trying to fix this issue on my Kawasaki z 440 LTD. I have tried factory settings (2.75). I have tried following your guide. I have tried everything !! :( My bike used to run okay. Then I installed pods. Tried 3 verions.. couldn't get it right. Finally I bought the original air box and installed it. (Air vent to the motor is still blocked) but I still can't get it to work. Idle works. If I turn the idle screw enough, I can even idle fine with the pilot jet all the way in. However.. No matter what setting it use. I get the scenario you mentioned at the end. The throttle will have delay and take several seconds to go back to idle when I release. I could really use some good advice!

Is there a way to do the opposite for sleeper builds? Idk, it'd be cool to further the idea that its a POS with the fact that it doesn't make a bunch of noise. Also, would there be a way to reduce exhaust restriction while still keeping it quiet and not straight pipe it for maximum airflow?

The engine was only running on the front cylinder when I bought it so I went through and replaced the stater and the voltage rectifier, new battery, plugs, filters, and plug wires. I'm running the bike on 93 octane. And now I can't seem to get it to run on point. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I have a xs400 which runs ok after carb cleaning but i want to adjust the mixture screw. The problem is that on of them was stuck and drilled or as it seems like hammered out and the hole is now bigger in one carb. Therefore the screws need to be adjusted completly diffrently. Now the question, is it bad if I unplug one plug and only adjust the one zylinder at a time? Thank you very much.

I always wondered what those blank brass dealies were. I'm definetely running lean as the fucking airbox connectors won't stay attached to the carb throats. I hit a bump all of a sudden my carbs are just sucking in free air, no filter or anything. That's a problem by itself but in the meantime I'm picking up some pod filters and will have to tune out the lean condition. I won't lie, I like the backfiring on decel but I don't like that I have to bump start my bike if it's below 50 degrees outside. Luckily the carbs were coming out anyway. Thanks for these videos!

Anyways i will leave it turned where it is now because it has more power, but does anyone have any ideas on what i should do to get rid of the popping / backfiring???

Why not use a sheet metal screw and a slide hammer to pull the Welsh Plug rather that the progressive drill bit sizes? I have done many Keihin carbs with the screw method, no problems And, why not un-twist those throttle cables while you had the cable bracket off of the carbs? Or is there a reason to leave the cables twisted together? ....RooDog....

That is, does a pilot screw serve to adjust both air and fuel mixtures? Please acknowledge as I have been unable to find anything in my manual indicating an air or fuel mixture screw.
