Jen's transmission in her 2004 Honda Civic started slipping real bad and then became un drivable. I looked up the P0700 / P0740 codes and it seems replacing the trans is a typical solution. Let's pour some diesel in it instead and see if that fixes it. I wouldn't recommend 2001 to 2005 Honda Civics. This one is junk in comparison to the 1996-2000 generation imo.
I also ordered this filter amzn.to/47LZaxn to put on the cooler hose and help capture crud in the system.
THANKS SO MUCH FOR WATCHING!

Dude your video helped me TREMENDOUSLY, I was stranded in my 02 Civic, car would not move, I removed the trans cooler input line and blew into the tranny filter and it was plugged, I kept blowing and cleared it enough to drive to Harbor Frieght parking lot, I bought a power inverter, air compressor, 2 gallons of diesel fuel, 8 quarts of Mobile 1 DW-1 fluid. I used compressed air and diesel fuel as you did and it worked perfectly. I'm back on the road shifting like new

As soon as i heard the symptoms and the whining noise, immediately thought trans fluid pump. nice fix.
@bomatt
@bomatt 11 ай бұрын
For anyone interested. I just did this to my 2006 Acura tl with 130k miles. You could hear the whining pump (I think that’s a good indicator if ur in the same boat) I used a donor banjo bolt with transmission hose to connect to the trans filter up top (tl/accord v6 does not have trans cooler )I drained the trans (not running) and replaced the fluid that came out with diesel. I ran it up to temp then shut it off and forced air basically into the filter housing. I did this twice (startup then shut off then use air) before draining the diesel. New grime appeared on the magnetic drain plug! Long story short this process worked! It’s 2/24/24 and I will update when it fails or if I do a filter change and or inspection
@bomatt
@bomatt 11 ай бұрын
I forgot to mention my TL would only have gears for about one minute after cold start. After that it would basically act like a false neutral in any gear.
@mistydav11
@mistydav11 10 ай бұрын
So basically you unhooked the factory line and banjo bolt and used a junkyard bolt and cutoff hose and shot the air in there???? Did you hook the other 1 back up after the reverse bj thern run it???Mine makes the same sound. all gears turn to neutral after 30 or 40 mph, high rpms until I stop and restart then I get another mile or 2 .
@bomatt
@bomatt 10 ай бұрын
You can use your original banjo but I had one on standby. It’s a pain to separate that rubber hose so I just ran a “new” hose and banjo. Reverse bj with half diesel (I actually did 100% diesel bc I had nothing to lose but it messes with viscosity and flow).
@bomatt
@bomatt 10 ай бұрын
Yes I hooked up the original line that runs to the back of the transaxle. Otherwise it would just pump fluid all over the floor. The trick is to push all fluid backwards into the bottom of trans and hope the magnetic drain plug catches it and you drain the rest of the filter plugging material

I'm thankful for you posting this. My best friend brought me his wife's 2003 Civic LX sedan a week ago because it was doing the same thing, just not quite as bad. I drained and filled the trans, drove it, then did another drain and fill. They said it was a major improvement. Then I got a call on Monday that it was back to being just as bad, so I started sourcing a good used or refurbished transmission for them until I found this video. Needless to say, I just picked up 3 gallons of DW-1, a quart of Lucas Trans Fix, and a gallon of diesel. I'll post an update on this comment later tonight once I've finished and let you know if it works out for me. I figured the worst case scenario, my friends are out $100 on this fluid and diesel, and we'd be back to searching for a replacement transmission. Better than jumping the gun and buying a $1,000+ replacement trans AND a ton of labor on my part if this can take care of the problem.
@zachpeterson2135
@zachpeterson2135 Жыл бұрын
Update: It worked great! The high pitched whining is gone. The lack of power (ability for the transmission to move the car & shift gears) is completely fixed. The only issue this one is still having is slight slippage between 1-2 & 2-3 at certain speeds.. But it's minor compared to what it was. Being that these friends of mine just want to get another 2-3 years out of this car, I think I've saved them from either replacing the transmission or getting rid of it and taking on a new car payment now!
@MrSamPhoenix
@MrSamPhoenix Жыл бұрын
@@zachpeterson2135wow great fix! Do you think another round of this “diesel medicine” would completely fix the transmission? Also, did the transmission have any codes stored?
@zachpeterson2135
@zachpeterson2135 Жыл бұрын
@MrSamPhoenix That car did not have any stored codes. And I ended up running 3 total gallons of diesel fuel through it (probably 5-6 flushes total), then flushed 4 times with brand new ATF each time. With the final fill of ATF, I also added a bottle (1 quart) of Lucas Trans Fix, which I think helped massively. They're bringing it back to me in about a month to replace the timing belt & water pump, so I'll be doing another transmission drain and fill at that time with new ATF and another bottle of Lucas.

Nice little video man, this reminds me of a story from my dad. My dad is a independent mechanic in central Oregon, owns and has run his shop alone for almost 40 years. Repairing mostly Mercedes-Benz and BMW. He tells me about his repairs sometimes and something like this came up, a Mercedes e320 with a Transmission problem, dealer and other mechanics wanted to replace it for 3k but after some testing dad found it was a blocked ATF line. Replaced the line, did some other stuff, 500$. The difference between an independent mechanic and a dealership mechanic.

Went the extra mile and cleaned primed and painted all the frame and everything nice. In the end it the replacement Trans didn't work. I remanned transmissions under warranty for Honda for 10 years. That car should have a PLX transmission. They have micro screens in the valve body that are the diameter of a dime that easily get plugged up from clutch material...They also have several BB-sized check balls that have a tendency to wear out the steel separator plates between each layer of the valve body. They can be serviced, but it takes a lot of time and patience to do it. Even after 10 years, remanning just the valve body would take me better than an hour. The clutches inside look just like a motorcycle clutch, but instead of using springs to make the clutch packs grab, it's the trans fluid pressure...So once those micro screens start to plug up, the clutch baskets start slipping.

This was great Chris. I love a simpler project that brought a great result. I am driving a 2003 Sable Wagon. When I first inherited it from a friends estate, in the summer of 2022, I took it to a local fluid change chain and had the oil and atf changed, and the rad flushed. Turns out, when I had the car to my new mechanic, that the monkeys didn't change the atf. When my mechanic checked, he said the atf had probably never been changed, and certainly hadn't been changed a year ago. The proof of this is how much better it drove and performed after he actually did an atf fluid and filter change. This video hit home. The trans in my car is reported to be a weak link. I think regular changes will keep it on the road longer. You did some great NNKH work on Jen's Civc,

While such a solution would obviously collect the contamination, it will also add additional pressure drop which could have negative effects. Granted so does a clogged suction strainer. The internal filter clogging with clutch material is the biggest issue with these transmissions, because its tiny. But, if its clogged and blocks oil, blowing the clutch material out of the filter is a band aid, the clutches are definitely worn. But I do wonder how long it would last after that. The forums had all the solutions except for pushing air into the lines to clear the filter. I wish I tried that two years ago with mine, might have saved me a ton of time and a rebuild. I just used the oil pump with both cooler lines off to get all the old oil out and get the new oil in through the converter. So good fix!

I did same w my mitsubishi 2.0l. Drained trans, took off pan, changed the internai filter, new fluid,. Was slipping etc Didn'seem to be fully cured, but driveable enough to get around. Then about a month later , all good like normal . Its always worth a try.

Pretty important video! Lot of people are paying big bucks getting into a situation like this. Toyota , Honda .. I don't know how many have 'unserviceable' transmissions but if you change the fluid early (30K) you'll probably be ok , change it late ... then it starts slipping.

Awesome fix!! Makes ya wonder how many went to meet the crusher that just needed a little creativity. I've had some great luck doing trans flushes qt at a time out of that rad cooler line.

So I did the first stage of this fix tonight on my 2006 TL. I bought an extra banjo bolt. & extra transmission filter inlet Hardline. Couple of crush washers. To mimic the actual transmission return line going into the external transmission filter housing on top of the transmission. The hard line after it was attached exactly like the factory hardline / return line with the banjo bolt, was pointing up & away from the engine. Inserted my air gun nozzle. Blew high pressure air into the transmission. I saw some air & slight bubbling out of the actual hardline inlet pipe that was still attached to the internal workings of the transmission, but not connected to the transmission filter housing. I had it laying next to the transmission filter housing as I had my secondary adapter hardline pipe & banjo bolt connected to blow the air into the transmission. Pressurized a couple more times. Started the car. Heard the transmission pump still whining. Was bummed out. Waited a minute. Put it in reverse. Found reverse. Put it in drive. Went into drive. Drove it in circles around the lot. It drove. It took it up and down the street. Shifted through the gears for the first time in 2 years. Tomorrow. Under its own power it will go up onto a drive-on lift. I will drain the transmission. I will fill with three quarts of diesel. Run through the system. Remove the proper hard line and banjo bolt. Attach the spare repair Hardline and banjo bolt. Blow air through again. Drain & fill a couple times with diesel fuel until I don't see any residue on the magnetic drain plug. Will then do a multiple transmission fluid rinse. Probably start out with six quarts of regular dextron cheap Walmart ATF. Then finish with a couple drain and fills of the Honda fluid. Will probably then also drain and fill in 500 mi or so. This process all started out with also changing the external transmission filter on top of the transmission. The one that's in the aluminum housing to where the transmission hardline and banjo bolt insert. Will also change that in about 500 mi in case debris has collected there. At that point will do one more reverse air pressure blowout. This man is a genius. He literally solved the 20-year transmission problem with Honda transmissions. Possibly even longer with the four speed Civic and a core transmissions. After three decades. He has found a simple easy fix. Everybody should contribute money and get this man to a 100,000 GoFundMe or some sort of something. He's going to save people tens of thousands of dollars going forward. Someone find out his PayPal so I could send him $100

Idimetsu is a cheaper substitute than DW-1. Supposedly the oil bender for Honda OEM fluids. Oh, and that OEM oil filter is a cheap Fram POS. Mainly, service it regularly.

Thats a great idea to use remnant atf to teat on it. Why waste good new oil of something that might be already DOA.. forgot to mention that too. I put in that multi import or whatever thibking it would be fine and boy WAS I WRONG! The clutch bands slipped like crazy! Only original. You'd think sonce its castrol it would be fine but NOPE. Hard lessons from not owning a Honda. Same with the power steering fluid. Generic will make the seals leak.

never having changed the trans oil and been slipping for a while now answers a lot for me, I am not surprised at the malfunction. I am not sure what to think of using a variety of odd ball fluids in it, on my ford/mercury products they have demonstrated that the FORD brand fluid is the only way to go, I tried some other brands but the shifting was awful. Nice looking shop!
