About the network this uses, is this a serial network, like a can bus or rs485? If so, it could be easy as well as interesting to see what the protocol looks like with a serial monitor or oscilloscope.

From Wikipedia......LonWorks or Local Operating Network is an open standard for networking platforms specifically created to address the needs of control applications. The platform is built on a protocol created by Echelon Corporation for networking devices over media such as twisted pair, power lines, fibre optics, and wireless.

Interesting failure... the capacitors looked like they were Panasonic ones, usually very good ! it could have been running somewhere hot, I suppose...
