A great video Andrew. The maintaining and continued running of the older models isn't a bad thing if the young folks can be shown how do do that, even to the point of DCC fitting, which I'm sure the Warely Club does well. Looking at the Craft Ale business, it would take a lot of us, including the newer manufacturers to the hobby to look at producing in the UK, which should leave no room for the high prices we are currently experiencing. Not an easy task, but one we might have to consider more widely. A great video on some very pressing points and much food for thought. Great video, sir and a lovely example of a class 37 too! Keep safe and Keep warm. Cheers!

For me Bachmann are more interested in the likes of Dean Park who wants the very best, but also don't weather their locos or rolling stock due to price themselfs! I totally agree with you it's a HOBBY, should not be a price race which some manufactures' seem to be in. Accurascale & Revolution Trains have at least recognised this (with the wagons they are releasing)! I have just purchased a old LIMA class 33 in DRS livery after watching a couple of KZbin channels I have updated the loco at less than a 3rd off the price of Heljans 33 second hand on Flea Bay. Bachmann/Heljan/Hornby are killing their Golden Goose with their prices, of the big four makers only Dapol have managed to keep their heads on the ground on price.

Spot on. You feel you are being ripped off now to buy a new product with flimsy construction. I'd rather have these any day. It is time we saw these made in the U.K. with new machines with an eye to the future. Produce more and sell more rather than silly limited batches. There certainly is no need for the high prices of wagons and coaches either.

If they re-released the old tooling, it would cannibalise the sales of the new model. Total demand never changes, only the split between the suppliers. If they reduced the potential sales for the new model, then they'd never get the cost of the re-worked tooling back and would - lose money. Then in time, the cost of the other models is pulled up, because they'd lost money. It just isn't that simple. If modellers want better models (most do) then the result is the cost of making them. Or, you buy the second hand, or new old stock, and you have a solution that doesn't cause them to cannibalise their own range's sales. That's fine. That works.

Hi Andy I've still got 3 bachmann 37s on my layout, running right now. All older tooling and fitted with upgraded decoders, one sound from r&r and theyre great. I probably got 2 of them for under £100. The new bachmann stuff is a bit too expensive i agree although i own a 47, xmas pressie from yhe wife, so technically i didnt buy it lol. Bachmann could im sure run both but i suppose theyre just in it for the profit. Btw my accurascale although its brilliantly detailed is back with them for the second time to be repaired as their first effort wasn't very good. Anyway great video and i was sorry to see that the Warley show was finishing at the NEC, it was always a highlight for me. Atb Andy

To be fair the only problem with Bachmann is their terrible high prices, I know the Accurascale are superb but they can be a bit fragile as I found out when I picked mine up and it broke in my hands, Accurascale sorted it as soon as the parts were available, I have a few old Bachmann class 37’s and they are very good indeed, like you say the price of the Accurascale models are excellent, Bachmann models pop up in the sales from time time at very good prices, the working fans in the Bachmann models are great, you don’t have to buy a deluxe model as you can buy the fan unit from Bachmann spares and fit it straight into it without any issues, I usually get dcc ready because I like the Legoman sound decoders.

Interesting that theres been similar conversations in N gauge circles. I have a 15 year old Farish 66, it's not the best model, but it works, and looks like a 66. The new ones coming out are more expensive, and will look fantastic (yes I have ordered one!), but I cant see why like tku have said the old model cant be re run as a "budget" range. People complain the hobby isnt appealing to young people but when prices are as high as they are jts not surprising. I'm lucky I'm towards the lower age (still 30!) and can afford the odd nicer loco here and there, but I would probably buy a few budget models if I could!

What a great idea. In the current climate, this makes sense. Allied to this it is a cheaper option for new entrants to the hobby. From normal viewing distances (@ 3ft) it is really hard to tell the difference. These would certainly be a step up from Hornby’s Railroad loco’s too which TBF have their place. As an aside, I have just bought 3 Rapido OAA wagons & they are really superb. Having said that although the detail under the wagon is truly amazing, is it going to be seen? If this was omitted a reduced priced wagon would result. From a manufacturer’s perspective development costs would reduced & some if this could be passed onto the customer. It all makes sense really for everyone. A win- win situation!

Really enjoying your channel. The endless search for more detailed and specific models is driving up model costs exponentially. Luckily I could afford to buy the latest stuff at the latest prices, but I don’t. I started in the 1990s when Hornby top link in the brown box rivalled Lima in the blue box for which one could run the worse! When production moved to China, there was a spectacular improvement in detail and quality of running. Anything made 2005 to 2015 normally runs great has great detail and at normal viewing distance is indistinguishable from the current super detail stuff.

Do you think Britannia Models who charge £800+ for a four car unit are being greedy? Or is it the fact that producing an extremely detailed model is costly? Regardless of whether it’s a resin Britannia Models Class 312, or a plastic/diecast Bachmann 4-CEP, the process is the same. And that process is multi-staged and extremely complex. Therefore costly. Doesn’t matter whether it’s old tooling or new tooling, the process is still going to be a costly one.

How about bachmann put the old tooling in the EFE range, maybe with undecorated versions so modellers can have fun painting, using transfers etc.. hone some skills. Id buy one or two just to get something unique and have fun doing so- a cheaper hobby. Id say a fair price would be 100 pound a unit. The last 21pin version was fine and I cant tell the difference -apart from that fan! i bought a couple of deluxe when they came out- before the domestic price scam/hikes. I stand by the old tooling, I have 3 Bachmann 37s in various liveries and they all run like they are new and all 3 are over 10 years old. I'd even stand by the Vitrains 37/47s as better than Hornbys railroad alternatives for equivalent money. I do agree that pricing for new models has crossed the line of what is reasonable especially with the state of the world but the plus side for those who cant fork out £300 a model is the more "premium" models that are made and sold to people willing to spend that kind of money on them more bouyant the 2nd hand market for the older models becomes as they move on their old stock. Most of my collection is 2nd hand and its quite enjoyable hunting for those bargains. I got 2 Bachmann Class 20's recently both boxed with detailing and instructions etc for under £90 a piece and the both run like new. I sadly don't think its in Bachmann's operating handbook to take a step backwards when it comes to their models

I like the old tooling 37 by bachmann. I have a couple of the new ones which look good but they don't handle curves so well, I won't be buying any more of them. I have one of the new Accurascale 37s which is great and if I'm to spend that sort of money I'd stick with these. I still have a number of the old Bachmann 37s and would still have one frome the second hand market from time to time if the price is right. I think the new Bachmann tooling was them trying to compete with the Accurascale model and in my opinion coming out second best and over priced. Agree with what your saying they would be better off with selling the old tooling at an affordable price.

What so many people fail to recognise is that the price takes into account so many different things. For starters, Bachmann only sell direct to model shops at a trade price, which gives the model shops certain freedom to sell that model at whatever price they choose (after 8 weeks of release). If Bachmann went the way of Accurascale and sold direct , the RRP would probably be about 40-45% cheaper! But that would spell the end of model shops as we know them. Secondly, it isn’t 2005 anymore. Prices of labour in China, and impact of inflation has dramatically increased the cost of production and transport. You name me one industry market where prices have decreased over the past few years? People are so quick to claim ‘oh Bachmann are just ripping us off’ but don’t consider what goes on behind the scene and the fact that all sales are helping towards the tooling of brand new models!

I am now buying more RailRoad locos as with the new TXS decoders the sound is a lot better than the TTS and you can get a sound fitted loco for around £150 , or £130 with some of them . This then means I can get afford to get some Accurascale locos and at the moment I have their Class 92 and 37 . I cannot see why Bachmann could not put the older toolings such as the Class 37 & 47 into the EFE range priced at £130 DCC ready. Also at normal viewing distance can we tell the difference , I am like you in that I have to take stock on & off the layout so I need something that copes with handling . Hi Andy, happy new year to you and your family, Bachmann have Rolls Royce prices for what ever reason, they are probably funding their new dcc control system like Hornby hiked up their prices to fund their HM7000 system, Bachmann have bulletproof diesels in my opinion and to date haven’t let me down like Hornby do, if Bachmann rerelease the older tooling range I believe they would sell very well, I hope they produce one in the network rail yellow livery to stop the people selling 10 plus year old models for £200 - £250 without sound which is a joke, the DB Schenker red livery class 37 was only produced by Bachmann, I’m very luck to have one as they are a limited edition model, not sure if Accurascale will do a red livery class 37 even though they are real and not fictitious. The Deluxe models are great with the proper motorised roof fans that make the Hornby offerings look very inferior in my opinion, Bachmann’s older tooling is better than Hornby’s new tooling hands down, I wait until I see the newly tooled models in sales at realistic prices then they go like hot cakes, Bachmann don’t produce enough of certain items and this tends to fuel the greed in the secondhand market, let’s hope something gives on the pricing side before it all goes under, thanks for sharing.

Why can’t Bachmann offer us a class 37 at a more affordable price ??? They could, but price is determined by the market not what it costs to make. There are too many people out there prepared to pay the high price. When there are models left on the shelf the price might come down. The upside to all these high prices is that manufacturers are making some really obscure models. Who would have thought we would have got the Bullied electric from EFE or Class 89 from Accurascale. Nice video Andy. Bachmann have probably scrapped that tooling along with the first gen model. Bachmann will argue with their 3 versions of the same model via varying specs is their nod to catering to differing budgets. Theyre fully wedded to the Rolls Royce models at Rolls Royce prices mantra . Theyre under the illusion that offering a budget range will devalue their 'brand' & cause a abstraction of sales away from the premium models. Obviously they've never heard of Volkswagen Audi Group, who own 26 different brands & are quite happy to sell you a Suzuki, Seat , Skoda , Volkswagen , Audi, Bentley , Lambhorghini , Porsche ,Bugatti. If you can afford the Lambo all good & well & if you can afford the Skoda again theyre happy as the company is still getting the revenue. Since the Hattons 66 models have become ridiculously over specified / cramming far to much on models & its coming at a cost not only fiscally , but with reliability & durability. The desire to dazzle has become all consuming. Some of these newer offerings are soon losing the sheen with the various issues. I only buy a new tool model if its something Lima or Hornby Margate didnt make. In recent years the grand sum of 3 class 68's, a 66 & a 70 have arrived & so i thought id break with the usual hunt for a cheap Lima loco & i treated myself to a Bachmann class 70 at xmas, first new Bachmann loco in 7 years , i had the funds & Rails where knocking £50 off so it was a case of now or never. The other issue is there was naff all else in their range i'd buy anyway & then theres the eyewatering costs of their wagons. I dont buy Hornbys locos & i wasnt convinced with the Accurascale offerings & so i gritted by teeth & went for the 70. I really liked what Bachmann did when they first entered the fray back in 1995 , the 158 , the wagons , the first gen 37 , doing all the things that we banged on at Lima to do but their importer to blind / stubborn to make the switch to getting stuff made per Limas continental HO range. The response back from Riko in 1998 was that nobody would buy a class 66 with 4 axle drive / can motor & lights at £75 or a bogie aggregate wagon at £17 & £20 for a intermodal flat . Bachmann listened & came up with the goods. Im really enjoying that ive gone back to the old 1980's / 90's ways of doing things in order to keep it affordable / retain interest & bring in more stuff. I generally put my money into rolling stock , the £300--350 on a new set of wagons spaced out over a few months & the abilty to get a cheap Lima loco to repaint / do up to haul it. Big plus for last year is the guy who does 3d print wagon kits of the megafrets & the MNA (db cargo) elano's , they cost a fraction of the rtr gear & i know theyre not 10 ton tessies & the 2 axle drive locos will haul a good number with ease. I made the mk5 sleepers affordable by bringing in a pair of Lima 92's to haul them & they more than do the job. I grew up with the Lima stuff & to me its still the gold standard for 00, nothing on them that cant be fixed , detailed / reworked ,made to look superb all for a sensible price & the fun of doing it, i did fall out of love with them when Bachmann came along , but ive rekindled my love affair for them. For many the Lima locos are museum pieces & they'd probably rather gouge their own eyes out with a rusty fork than go back to them / start buying them, heres the rub though , the manufacturers are not going to cut their prices & theyre not going to start up a budget range of models , so we are faced with hobsons choice. A whole new gen of modellers have come along & have been seduced by the new tools & all they offer, its a hard addiction to break. 2 warning shots across the bows of this hobby have been fired this week , peoples lack of disposable income & rising costs are starting to bite, you see the retailers on FB etc who put pictures up of their shops & the one thing you always notice , glass cabinets & shelves upto the brim with Hornby & Bachmann models.

I do agree with you that they should do these models again for about £130 as I must admit I had the model of the Bachmann Europhoenix 37 back in 2020 which I think I paid about £150 or something like that

It is interesting to hear that Bachmann is more expensive than equivalent Accurascale models. I think when companies are using old molds and charging modern prices, that's a rip-off. I am a bells and whistles guy, so my Euro stuff is just expensive, so prices are off for me, anyhow. In the end, you have to feel you are getting bang for your money. Most companies I follow have 3 tiers for pricing, on top of kiddie ranges and more.

If the industry doesn't put the clamps on in a couple of years, no one will be able to afford a brand new loco. I mean, take the new class 158, £450 for a sound fitted one 300-350 for normal one that's a weeks wages for most people and dont get me started on coaches and wagons. I reamemd when you could get a brand new hst for £150 and that was only 10 years ago. Im not looking forward to how much thing will cost in anouther 5 years.

Hi Andy. I have that same model, I also had the newer SF version on order. I cancelled in favour of a SF Accurascale as they have stay alive. I'm still waiting. On another subject I want to hear what you have to say but the signal box background noise is very distracting.

I got that model a couple of years ago had a job to find new stock and bought the engineers grey, then a Dutch came up. I agree with you, but I doubt they`d do it as it would take sales away from the newer model, but having bought two heavily discounted deluxe models, I Can say window pointless fan gimick and not worth the premium, sounds not that great, I`m all ready looking at what speakers I can fit, but it should be hi fidelity sound at that price, Theres nothing in the range that would make me pay anywhere close to rrp.

IMO there's no clear answer I can give here, it's all very subjective and prone to expectations. We have loads of older Bachmann 37's and have no intention of changing them out for the latest from Baccy or Accurascale except by way of an addition of hitherto unavailable livery or number. One thing I will say across the board of manufacturers... Sort your frigging electric motors out!!!!

People, you are being MUGGED! Don't buy at Bachmann's RRPs, they are obscene. As I predicted, they are being heavily discounted by retailers due to poor sales because of the ridiculous initial prices. If you pay their crazy high prices they'll continue to charge those crazy high prices! Therefore if you pay full price you are part of the problem! I recently bought a brand new Bachmann 35-306SFX from a retailer for £189, so keep your eyes peeled and ONLY buy at sensible prices. I guarantee that if you won't pay it, they won't charge it. As for those Hornby Railroad series locos, they have a terrible chassis, motor and mechanism; really awful rubbish and a completely false economy. Buy a second hand Bachmann instead.
