Lovely lively first sail of season and family is great crew! Wonderful. Brought back memories of being my Dad's crew. If we had cell phones back then, I can see my father in disgust, chucking it in the drink. (Son reminded me of a young woman I was driving behind as she multi-tasked, and I marveled how well she did.....until she drove her little Honda over a high curb while making a turn.) I'm glad you can still get your kids out on the water and in God's creation. I don't want to live in a "metaverse".

To be fair, most of the time he was checking the view from the action cam strapped to the flagstaff. There was at least one occasion where he noticed the sail on the screen and trimmed accordingly...the metaverse is here :)

Aaaah, happy days 🙂. Always great to see you back on the water. I always feel really chilled out after one of your videos. Don't know if it's your voice, South Devon or the sailing. Whichever it is, it's great. We have a week's holiday booked in the Dartmouth area in June and can't wait, one of the loveliest places in the UK (but don't tell anyone !!!!). hi. towing capacity (braked) of my car is 1700kg. I don't really move the boat around very much but the journeys i have done have been quite comfortable. The longest trip i've done is 190 miles. The car seems to cope easily, i've not had a problem launching and recovering at Galmpton which is a really shallow slip way. We get some wheelspin on loose weed (which i can't be bothered to clear) but i've never thought that i was straining the car at any point.

That was a quick first reef. Impressive! (Helps having some crew). One question. At 16:00 you talk about keeping a full jib along with the two reefs, and you say "And not a hint of weather helm". But if you did have too much jib out, that would produce *lee* helm, wouldn't it? I ask because I sometimes get a fair bit of weather helm on my Gypsy, & I'm still trying to work out how to best balance the sails in stronger winds. (Mast rake could also be a factor).

It's always really quick when you don't have to do it yourself:) You're right...Too much jib would give me lee helm, but it never gets that unbalanced. In fact i've never felt lee helm on the Shrimper. Mast rake is a big factor. With low tension rigs like ours, as the wind rises and loads increase on the mainsail, the rig is pulled back, moving the centre of effort aft and giving more weather helm. I think high peaked gaffs like ours amplify this effect. A full jib (hard in upwind) keeps the rig more forward and counteracts it a little. In my case, the jib is very new but the mainsail is knackered; it has stretched and has a large belly in it (much like me) this also moves the centre of effort aft and increases drag=weather helm. If i were to casually glance at my own rig sailing upwind in moderate conditions i would say that the jib is over tight and the main is often backwinded, it doesn't look fast but its balanced and I think its the most efficient way to use the two sails i have at the moment. What i really need is a new main....my reefing regime may well change then.

There's a lot on the video that I can use as 'educational material' when I try to teach people how to sail this summer. Reefing, tacking. Lot of textbook stuff visualized! In a good way, I may add. And I agree with your idea and experience when it comes to reefing and the size of the jib. I only reef the jib when there's more wind that you can see on the video. A smaller jib makes tacking a lot more difficult under these conditions.

Loving the videos. We've an early MK1 (Lovely Lady, no. 107) here in Devon, complete novices and desperate to properly get into it but struggling to do so! You're cockpit finish look extremely clean, have you had it repainted? So many questions!

Where abouts in Devon are you? Pop down to the Dart and you can look at the cockpit, perhaps go out for a sail. We’re all novices, I managed to get the gaff outside the topping lift today 🙄

She's out of the water this year due to getting married we Knew we wouldn't get much time to sail. We found the drive to Dartmouth a bit too long to do regularly, what's the river like further up?

Do you still have the two cleats on the forward face of the mast foot? I like the idea of this but wonder if the jib sheets ever get caught up. Or any other lines come to that.

Jib sheets have caught once 😊. A bit of bungee between the two would have prevented it and I keep meaning to do that. Otherwise, I’m very happy with the arrangement

Just been watching your video about your rationale for buying Morning Vicar. I have very similar views and a 20ft daysailer. Is there a club or boatyard up Galmpton where I could keep my 20ft open boat for daysailing? I live just round the corner in Kingsbridge.

Yes, absolutely. Dolphin boatyard have just bought Darthaven opposite. They have quite a few trailer sailers stored there.
