PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Azzi Fudd scored 24 points to rally No. 3 UConn past No. 9 Iowa 86-79 Sunday in the championship game of the first Phil Knight Legacy women's tournament.
"It really was difficult to play against these guys," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. "I don't think we felt really good about ourselves at halftime. I thought we came out in the third quarter and really took control of the game."
Fudd had plenty of help, with Aaliyah Edwards (20 points, 13 rebounds) and three other Huskies (5-0) scoring in double-figures. Edwards was named MVP of the tournament.
Iowa (5-2) star Caitlin Clark had 25 points, and Kate Martin added 20.
Edwards got UConn off to a strong start, scoring 10 points while the Huskies built a 20-14 edge.
Clark and the Hawkeyes then surged with a 13-2 run to begin the second quarter and led 41-35 at halftime. Clark scored 17 points in the first half.
Martin hit a 3-pointer in the third quarter for a 52-41 lead, but UConn countered with 11 straight points and led 61-57 entering the fourth.
Iowa opened the final quarter with nine straight points for a 66-61 lead, but the Huskies countered and pulled away in the middle of the period, leading 79-70 after Carolina Ducharme's 3-pointer with 3:42 left.
"Azzi Fudd really came to life in that third quarter," Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said. "I was really pleased with our first half. If it wasn't for that third quarter, but yes, we play four. And we missed some shots in the fourth quarter that we usually make."

Edwards is looking particularly spunky this year. Seems like a different player from last year. I always thought she had better skills than Boston but didn't apply herself fully. I think she's ready this year!

I always thought having ONO was holding her back because the really didn’t have plays going to her it was always for ONO. But now she has free range and it’s so fun to watch.

Aaliya was the player of the game! She single handedly kept the Huskies in the game the first half. Welcome back, Caroline!!!! It was awesome watching you come back to your form after so much time recovering. 15 points with some important rebounds in only a half game worth of minutes was very much needed today! And the usual great games ( the second half anyway 😖 ) from Azzi, Lou, Aubrey, and Nika. When this team isn’t playing brain-dead, like they did in the first half, they are possibly the best team in the country. The challenge is to prevent a repeat of that mass sleep-walking episode from ever reoccurring!!!!!

"We just beat [some] really good teams in the span of 12-13 days. We have another one this Sunday [Notre Dame] with a conference game in between. You have to be able to bounce back, quarter-to-quarter, possession-to-possession, game-to-game. That's what prepares you for what happens in March." Geno Auriemma

Excellent game. Iowa made it an excellent game. I am a BYU fan. But I appreciate what UConn is able to do in coming back from a deficit. Iowa made it a great game. They have nothing to be ashamed of. I'm thankful for both teams.

I'm a sold out UCONN fan, but right now I'd leave the top three teams the same in ranking. After tonight, I think that Iowa should be moved to number four. There's so much parody this year.....I might change my mind in just a few minutes. It's gonna be a fun season!!

@@anthonytaylor7928 I think that you are correct about Iowa's schedule so far, Anthony. Their record doesn't really tell you too much about how strong or weak their team is. My estimation of their strength is based on how well they played against UCONN and how well they played last year. They went 24 & 8 and advanced to the Sweet 16. Plus, they have their entire lineup back for the third year. Of course, as you suggested we will have to see how they do against ranked opponents this year. Thanks for the chat, Anthony. You made a good point. We will have a fun season this year, won't we??

Good ass game! As expected! Idk but maybe its just me, I find the woman college basketball more interesting then the men college basketball. Women's college basketball is soo much fun and interesting especially when the top teams play each other! Cant wait to see who wins it all. I definitely think South Carolina, Stanford or UConn is going to win it all. Ohio State, Indiana and Iowa looks good to. Anyone one of them can pull an upset on South Carolina, Stanford or UConn. Cant wait for South Carolina vs UConn to play. Waiting for LSU to play a legit team😂they haven't played anyone yet.

To understand what happened in this game against an Iowa team that has three shooters: Clarke, Cizano & Warnock, you must admit that Edwards, Fudd, Ducharme, Lou Lou, and Griffin all scored. That means, Iowa had to defend against five shooters; whereas, UConn only had to defend against three. That's huge because UConn has Nika Muehl who is all conference on defense. Sure, Clarke had a good game & she was backed by Warnock, but Edwards shut Cizano down. That means Edwards did an heroic job on defense in addition to logging another double-double. That's All America.

Chester, I'm hoping that Edwards maintains her current form and earns All American status. I'm also hoping that she has a monster game against S/Carolina later this year and that she holds Boston in check. If she does that, UCONN has a great chance to go back to the Final Four.

Last week, I thought South Carolina vs Stanford was the best women's game so far this season. One of those game in the Bahamas beat that until this game yesterday. I will not make any opinions about champions and so on until late January to early March.

I'm not sure who's "rating" her, but out of 5500 women in D1 BB she's #1 in assists. And she just defended possibly the best scorer in D1 and held her scoreless for more than a quarter and a half. But sure, who needs that...?

I wouldn’t say she’s overrated but not scoring at least 10 points in a effective way as a pg is gunna hurt the team long term I mean look how lost they looked in the first half once Azzi or Lou start off cold...13 assist that’s great but she had 6 turnovers and only 2 points...SC is the real test so we’ll see

@@kyson333 Ky, I think that Nika can score more if she is asked to. At present, her job is to defend, disrupt and distribute which I think that she is doing quite well. I agree with many fans out there who think that she is the heart, the leader of this UCONN team. I agree with you that S/Carolina and Boston is the greatest challenge on our schedule. If Edwards stays in her current form, I think that we can pull off a win against Boston and company.
