I've never been a drinker, never liked the taste. So I'm always the one ordering a soda when everyone else is drinking. No one pays attention and no one cares, so don't worry about it.

anyone who mentions not liking the taste concerning drinking bothers me. the only thing about the taste is how to try to make it good if you feel like it. the bottom line is getting drunk. so be honest: you don't like getting drunk; and that is perfectly fine. if flavor is the only reason you never get drunk, welcome to peer pressure town. if you just don't like getting drunk, sa'll good.

@@kght222 Why are you so uncomfortable with the fact that someone may actually not derive pleasure from the taste of alcohol? I genuinely don't, I've never been drunk in my life so it would be stupid of me to judge something I never experienced first hand. The taste of alcohol however, that I did experience first hand. And it was not pleasurable to my taste buds, that's all. I think some drinkers are uncomfortable with the fact that alcohol may not only be very bad for your health; but also be quite disgusting unless you desensitize yourself to it through constant drinking, be honest.

Yeah I had a quick phase that I drank with friends but not even a lot and now, I just don't really enjoy drinking alcohol anymore, the taste of it isn't something I miss BUT I miss having the chance to taste amazing cocktails. My friend made me this amazing mocktail and it reminded me of how I loved the creativity when mixing flavors and liquors

@@kght222 I love the taste (of most alcohols; beer, vodka, sake, champagne, fruity cocktails, etc), but hate getting drunk. Luckily it takes a few for me to get drunk, but regardless, I don't drink that often. It's like a dessert, an occasional treat just to enjoy the taste, knowing it isn't healthy. That being said, there is no reason for it to bother you that someone else may not enjoy the taste. It's not always about getting drunk.

@@kght222 Nope that's super incorrect. I don't really drink and if I do drink then it's a cocktail or an amaretto. Most alchohol just tastes pretty bad to me. Especially beer and red wine. I like being drunk as I have a lot of fun when I am drunk. So no, it entirely comes down to the taste.

Some time ago I talked to someone studying sleep patterns and stuff - and he said that the analysis of wrist watches about REM sleep doesnt AT ALL represent the actual phases you have REM sleep when compared to the actual measuring method of putting electrodes on ones head to measure whats going on in the brain while sleeping. Maybe that topic/ comparison could be one of your next topics since your sleep quality is a recurring topic in your videos and obviously of great importance to you. :)

My lapsed Catholic mom decided to give up drinking for Lent a few years ago, which, my-not-raised-Catholic self believes is about 7 weeks. She said for roughly the first month she struggled with sleep, but after that it got much better. I've also had a hard time sleeping since not drinking for the last three weeks. Definitely hoping this improves.

I have joined you on this no alcohol month! It has been interesting exercising self restraint, that's mostly it, just reminding myself that I don't NEED to drink, but it's a nice thing to have sometimes. Also finding nice things to drink that aren't alcohol and aren't super sweet is challenging. Been drinking a lot of tea. I look forward to when the month is done so that I can have the occasional celebration drink or Friday drink, but all in all so far it's been a good exercise!

I too took a break from drinking though not for the purpose of "Dry January". As a graduate student I found that my drinking habits were becoming a bit out of control and interfering with my long term goals. I find that I am way more focused on my daily tasks and getting more work done. Like you, I haven't really noticed any improvements related to sleep and overall well being (except maybe lower stress/anxiety). We had a few people over the other night and while everyone was drinking, I decided to drink Martinelli's sparkling gape juice. It served the purpose of having something in my hand but my jaw dropped when, after finishing the bottle, I realized there was 41g per serving haha..... I live in South Louisiana so I think I'm going to hold off until Mardi Gras and adjust my overall consumption moving forward to something more appropriate than what it was in the past.

With regards to sleeping. I was watching something the other day that said that it could take months for your sleep to improve. Have you read the book "Why we sleep" by Matthew Walker? It's a fantastic book about sleep. But if pick it up you should know that much of the first half or something is about how important sleep is and the negative consequences of bad sleep, so if you know you easily feel down hearing stuff like that when you don't have perfect sleep, it is something to have in mind before.

Hi! I know it's an old video but sleep and alcohol are two subjects I always come back to. I'm sure you know about this but sport watches are pretty inacurate when it comes to measuring sleep. I also have trouble sleeping, not as bad as yours though. I'm currently trying a cognitive behavioral therapy, where you drastically reduce the time you spend in bed. I used to feel like I needed 8 hours of solid sleep just to be able to function, so as time went by, I would increase my time in bed to make sure I had a chance to reach those 8 hours. As a result, my trouble falling asleep worsened, I developped some sort of sleep anxiety and got more and more exhausted. I'd spend 9 hours in bed but sleep 5ish. With the therapy, I can't get in bed before 11.30pm and have to get up at 6.30 for 4 weeks. It's been a few days but I can already see huge improvements. I'm tired because it's not enough sleep, but it's good-quality sleep and I don't hate my bed anymore. Thanks for your content, been watching you for 7 years.

Cool to be doing a challenge with you! On day 28 of Dry January. I've found that just flavored seltzer and some mint leaves in a wine glass is enough for me to squelch that "treat yourself" feeling. I can’t drink because of my health, never have, and I know exactly what you mean about feeling alone. That is a pretty bad feeling, and I’m sorry you’re going through it. Maybe keeping in mind that they’re doing what they think is best for them, but you’re also doing what you think is best for you. If it’s worth it to maybe cut girl’s night short because you’re not feeling it, stand up for yourself the way you would if one of your friends was going through the same experience. Having half the empathy with yourself as you do for others makes it easier. Hang in there, Mary! You’re doing great!

I was dating a girl for a bit who liked to make them but they were always way too sweet. Then again I don't drink regular cocktails either, mostly because the only cocktails I know are ones I made up with my friends that I know bartenders won't know. Just give me a beer.

Aaron... What other changes have you made in those 20 days? If you've changed the type of foods you're eating, when you eat them and how much, that might be the reason. 85% of weight loss is diet. If you gave up drinking that many beers a night and still having lost any weight after 20 days, the benefit of doing so is being masked or negated by other things you're eating.Good luck and stick with it!

I have never wanted to drink or be drunk and I honestly have never understood the obsession with it. When I was 20-25, so many people tried to get me to drink various drinks, and it was so annoying to say no all the time. I kind of lost all of my friends in late 2015 and I spent so long not thinking, talking, or hearing about alcohol that I forgot that people actually still drank. It was like hearing about how people still play with Rubik's Cubes after not seeing one since the '80s.

What's your blood vitamin D level? Low levels can cause sleep problems and you are in the north in winter. Check out Dr. Stasha Gominak for more info on that.

I honestly like these videos better then the other of your channel. I feel like the other is entertaining. I can only imagine the work and editing that goes into it. I feel like if you put fewer cuts in clips in your other videos it may be better for you. I love your videos and your comedy takes on life, but I feel like maybe it takes from your life . Just my opinion.

Only when watching this video (and not the one about learning new skills) did I hear his name as “James Owl-toucher”. I too did a dry January. Didn’t miss booze but won’t stay booze free forever. Just booze lesser. Get well soon!

You forgot to mention how much *money* this is saving you, lol. 😜 Alcohol is EXPENSIVE! I've always been shocked by how much extra money I have when I've cut out the booze - and my husband and I very occasional drinkers to begin with.

take the sleep study with a grain of salt - its not for everyone. I technically *have* sleep apnea. I scored a 4.5 on one test and a 5.5 on another which I guess is borderline. I never had daytime tiredness, but I did have many times I woke up gasping. So they said to try the mask - I did it for 6 months. It took me a couple months to get used to it.. then I actually started liking it and used it longer and longer every night. THEN I started having MAJOR issues with day time sleepiness, it was really bad and confusing because that was never a symptom I had ever had. This went on for months, until finally one weekend I was determined to not use the mask. It was really hard because I came to rely on the mask. After that first night sleep I felt like a new person and it just kept getting better. I also used nose-strips to help open my nostrils a little wider. So I ditched the mask, wear a nose strip to bed and make sure I drink enough water (this was a huge factor in my apnea apparently). and all is well in sleep land! also having a kid REALLY screwed up my sleep and now the kid is 10.

I’m really glad you don’t need a cpap anymore! I’m wondering if my Da should go and see what’s up with his sleep because he’s been just exhausted lately, even with his “breathie.” I’m going in for a study in a few months and am nervous. We don’t think it’s sleep apnea, but I really really don’t like the machines. The feeling of the air being forced into my nose is really disconcerting and I even had a few anxiety attacks. I also turn and flip a ton because of chronic pain, so I’m not sure how well wearing a mask would go. I’m glad you figured out your sleep situation, because, MAN, can it just poison the rest of the day!!

@@SunflowerSpotlight absolutely. I still have the occasional bad night where I'm useless the next day. But usually its I went to bed too late, got over tired and/or forgot to drink enough water. Obstructive sleep apnea is all about he tissue mass in your oral cavity and lack of water will make the tissue irritated and swell. Also if I'm in physical pain or stressed about something that contributes. Usually I do deep breathing to help relax me before sleep. Exercise also helps. Make sure if you have anxiety to deal with that in someway.

JB Thanks for the reply, JB! I’ve actually been going through some anxiety issues lately (my mom has late term cancer), and next week I’m finally going to go over the whole bad sleep breakdown and talk about my anxiety. Hopefully between that appointment and your ideas, I can tide myself over until I have a sleep study to pin down exactly what’s up. I did recently see my allergist and he commented that I have pretty fine nasal features, which means that if I have any allergies going on, even just general inflammation, that because the area’s smaller than usual, more of the space is taken up, proportionally, and my breathing could be messed up simply from that! So, here’s to anxiety treatment, antihistamines, water, and deep breathing exercises! 😅 Thanks for the advice! I really hope that your sleep continues to improve.

So last year New Year’s Day Of 2019 I wake up with massive hangover and I said to myself “I do t need this shit in my life” I never was a massive drinker I didn’t need to have a beer after work or on weekend I was a very occasionally drinker. I did have a drink here and there but not to get drunk. It didn’t change anything in my life. But waking up on Sunday morning without hangover is THE ONE why I’m doing it. I just wish I could do same with cigarette :/
