he makes a good point that it can take longer to make it to majors in baseball than other sports. flip side is that baseball players have much more longevity than football or basketball players, so if you do make majors in baseball, you will likely have much longer career. Frank Thomas said that was a major reason why he chose baseball over football.
@RamaSivamani3 жыл бұрын
True but because of the declining media coverage of it there is less endorsement money opportunities. So sure you can have a longer career but there are former NBA players who are still making money with endorsement deals and partnerships even after they retire. That side of the money is harder to set up in baseball.
@bentoomet88052 жыл бұрын
@@RamaSivamani you would think the decline of baseball would hurt the players finances, but it hasn’t. The deals just keep getting bigger and bigger. The real reason the number of black players in baseball is going down is because black people just aren't that interested in baseball anymore. They'll play baseball, football and basketball as kids but when it comes time to pick one to focus on they go for basketball or football. Basketball and football are more enjoyable to play because there's more involvement in them. Kids just don't want to stand idle in the outfield for 3 hours and bat 4 times in that timespan. It's a different world now unfortunately.

Baseball is the most difficult sport to play well enough to get paid for it. Most black men that are talented enough to play another sport well enough to be recognized by a professional team, do not want to put the work and time just to be poor in the minors for 3-5 years and there still might be a possibility they never go pro and get paid. Due to injury or anything. Those 3-5 years could be spent playing football or basketball making millions of dollars. Instead of 42,000. Also baseball is the only sport that you do not need to be a specific size. So all tall black men or thicker black men did not win the genetic lottery like they did for bball or football.

I disagree that baseball stifles charisma. The Latin black ball players do their thing nowadays. The black American ball players of the 60's 70's 80's and early 90's did it their way with a lot of style. I.E. Willie Mays, Reggie Jackson, Ricky Henderson, and Ken Griffey Jr. They all had their flair and style. As long as you play the game the right way and you're good you can can be as cool as you wanna be. The problem is baseball is just not seen as cool in contemporary black music and culture anymore. If you look at the 40-to the early 60's ⚾ complented that jazz music and culture very well. Cause just like jazz music a baseball game can be going very slowly and then there's an upswing in tempo and things to start pick up and start going. And then slow down be cool again. And Jazz was the cool black music. Then R&B came into the picture with its tempos and beats. And styles of dressing and Afros and other haircuts it inspired. And thay still complemented baseball. They went well with each other. Then disco and early days of hip-hop emerged and the music started to speed up a bit more and get a bit more aggresive with the beats and flow of lyrics. As well as the style of clothing and how you carried yourself changed in the black culture. It reflected the more warrior like mentality of football and basketball of scoring on each other and crossing into their endzones. Just like in the early days of hip-hop with battle rapping. Baseball doesn't really reflect that it's different. Like George Carlin in baseball you don't score you go home. Lol So.....yea I think contemporary black music culture has a lot to do with the dwindling numbers of black Americans. I mean you barely even hear baseball mentioned in a rap song. Wheather it be mentioned in a metaphor or the naming of a current famous baseball player. I mean it happens but rarely. On the other hand Lebron James Stephen Curry Cam Newton and Odell Beckham Jr's names come up often in today's rap songs. So then it becomes a question of how major league baseball should take onus of speeding up the pace of the game. Or taking other measures to attract young the African-American generation to liking and wanting to play ⚾ . Honestly I don't think baseball has to change anything or speed up its pace. That's what makes it the most of all the major sports. So in my opinion the onus and the responsibility of drawing more black American ball players to this sports falls on those who dictate popular black culture. The rappers, singers, actors, celebrities, famous personalities. If they want to have more black people play baseball.....All they have to mention it. Rap about it. Sing about it. Talk about baseball in movies and shows. Make it cool for the contemporary you black crowd all over America. After that it becomes easy for baseball to be cool for black people to like and wanna play. That's the start. Then the black American ball players themselves will be their fame, legacy, and followings. Just like Jackie Robinson did in 1947 when he opened and lead the way for all black American ⚾ to be able play.

Most American ball players today come from middle class backgrounds or all former players' kids or relatives. So inner city kids don't relate to them and could care less. Plus if Ken Griffey played today he would not be as popular in the black community as he was then when black culture then was cool with it. Now not the same

So basically, what Stephen A. Smith and Nelly are saying, is that black men are too damn impatient to spend the time to hone their craft and be the absolute best. Mike Trout wasn't the best at DAY ONE. It took him a while to ease in to major league level play. Same with Mookie Betts. So if that's what they're saying, then most black athletes are looking to get paid first and foremost? I don't believe it, I think it's demeaning to their own people. It's simply that the game hasn't evolved like football or basketball, and even the best baseball players (minus a few like Trout, Betts, Harper), don't get the national spotlight like major basketball or football players do.

You are spot on and it is offensive because it takes hard work and persistence to play any pro sport. They are being replaced by Dominicans and Asians, but overall what's the problem? Maybe blacks do not want to play baseball? So what? Why are these shows on the air?

blacks are not really into mlb. no reason at all to blame mlb that there are not more bruthas;besides, most bruthas are all about me me me and baseball is not geared that way.

When Nelly said "where's the skill competition," I stop listening and turned it off. The NHL runs skill competition on their All-Star games and I don't see black people forming a line to sign up for hockey.. The fact is, there are more scholarships to go around in college for basketball and football then baseball. College football and basketball get more exposure then college baseball. So you're a young black male living in poverty or whatever your situation is and have an opportunity to go to college to show off your skill set in front of millions of viewers are you really going to pick baseball?
