Mike and I went in to the White Rim Trail on a Saturday to fix an overland rig that had broken a brake line and a shock the day before. Luckily they were traveling in a group and had a ride out. So we went in to repair it and drive it out. Everything went fairly smooth and it was a quick trip. Thank you everyone for watching and supporting us.

That is a very good point about the bumper...I'm building my own right now and I didn't really consider that. Now I'm putting a spot on each corner specifically for the Jack. 💪. I always pick something new up every video. great job again fellers.
@Cy993C2
@Cy993C2 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, but there was an attachment point right there on the bumper to use a d-ring shackle with the Hi-Lift. I’d probably rather use a d-ring than a flat spot on a bumper (unless it’s a pocket specifically to retain the jack) as it’s likely the vehicle will not be flat when jacking off-road, which could cause the jack to slip on a simple flat spot. There’s some products out there, like Hi-Lift’s own bumper lift, and the DLA that locks the jack onto the attachment point, that are worth considering in your design. Further, the Hi-Lift will shear off your bumper’s paint or powder coat from a flat spot. Perhaps not a big deal out West where it’s dry, but that’ll start rust under your finish layer in some parts of the country. Hi-Lift jacks have the potential to be dangerous, not just dropping the vehicle but bashing out teeth with the handle, crushing toes, etc. Practice before you need it on the trail and that’ll help with your design.

@@rjm7168As is often the case with these "roads" it'll be 90% relatively easy and that 10% could be anywhere from mildly difficult to completely gnarly. As well the difference just a bit of rain can make in these places is extreme. The camera has a tendency to flatten every out as well, climbs are steeper than you realize and rocks larger too. I've seen it many times... Someone in a car is going along fine and dandy until they hit the hard section and suddenly they've cracked an oil pan.

Words of wisdom. I have fallen into the map trap and have learned. Once I was shotgun on a road trip and my partner swung onto a road and I forced a turn around. While they did not talk to me for awhile, we asked a local and they said they wouldn't even take an ATV on that route. (I drive with two different map programs working at the same time so I can compare. Plus an old school map in the tool box.)

That particular Wjite Rim Road goes around the "Island in the Sky" area of Canyonlands NP, going along the rims of the Colorado and Green River canyons, its an all day drive in a 4x4 to do the full loop, scenic as heck. Many people camp part way around and make a 2 day trip out of it. The only paved roads in the area are up on top, out to the end of the 'Island', and 1000 feet or more elevation above. Many of the other roads Trail Mater rescues people from are in deed just 4x4 for the fun of it roads, the 'destinations' are driving obstacles like the 'hot tubs', but that whole area of Utah is scenic as heck, so the drive itself is the destination.

I am in high desert AZ and do to the so called cheep land we have, had lots of people move here thinking they can just live in tents while they build and their all wheel drive vehicles will get them in and out an matter what. What people don't realize is that with the daytime temperature getting in the high 90s or even over 100 a lot of the time. Then, overnight, the temperature drops anywhere from 40° to 50° overnight, and they freeze. They don't think about the washes here when it rains. The main one by me comes from way over in NM so it can be dry here and still have a wall of water get them. The sand here is suger/blow sand, and if you stop in it, you may just be stuck. I've been off the grid over 18 years with different trucks over the years. Here or there, the desert can and just might kill you. Carry lots of water and extra food. Extra blankets or sleeping bags, as you can use both over your windshield or over open doors to make shade. Also, to many think, I can cut across here and get to a main road. Then they either get lost or hurt falling into washes that are deep. Just my two cents worth. The desert is beautiful but deadly. Stay safe. Here, I have anywhere from 10.5 miles of dirt/clay roads just to get to a two lane road on a good day. On days that we had lots of rain, it can be from 12 to 25 miles of bad road just to get to blacktop rd. Respect the desert.

9:06 Amen Rory, thank you for the wisdom. GPS is amazing at telling you exactly where you are on the globe. Google Maps is amazing at mapping a route from point A to point B (and selling your data and ads along the way [but I digress]). Neither one is a substitute for common sense. The advice that Rory gave about GPS is is 100% spot on. I myself have used GPS in the past a tremendous amount for business and for personal driving on trips. But I always had enough common sense about me that I would not let it take me from a perfectly good road out on some farmers tight field road. And you would think people would have enough sense about them to not turn off a very good road onto a bad road and especially out in the middle of nowhere’s. I mean come on folks. Outside of that another excellent video I guess with Rory made them 20 to 30 minutes long. 😞

Wise words about SatNav directions. My little story about that. I was delivering a large trailer load of stuff into rural Wales and driving along quite a good wide fast road. The satnav told me to take a turn off, which lead us into a narrow track, down across a ford, into a tiny hamlet, past a chapel and a very sharp bend in the road, and then a twisty climb back out to the same road we were on earlier, just about a mile further along. A pointless little detour where, once commited, we had no chance of turning around or reversing back. In a front wheel drive car we were lucky not to have to unhitch the trailer and get help. Every time since, the satnav still tried to get me to go that route, until I changed the satnav. Loving the videos, Rory, I really enjoy your style of recovery. Thank you.

Back in 1999 a large group of us spent a fun 4 early spring days on the White Rim. Where we broke one mountain biker, who we medevacked back to Albuq. NM. Then the following day, a couple of us picked up a retired USGS Suburban to drive down to Mineral Bottom to pickup some canoers and kayakers in our group to drive back to their Green River put-in, to pick-up their vehicles and return back down to pick up their canoes and kayaks. As we were finally loading up all our boats, it started snowing. Since we were expecting the storm, we sent all our 2 wheel drive vehicles without boats, to the top before it started snowing. Once all the boats were loaded up, there was maybe 2-3" of snow on the ground. Long story short, the first vehicle (a 4X4 with street tires) in our line of 4 made it around the first switchback and eventually slid into the bar ditch by the wall. The next vehicle was the fully chained up 4X4 Suburban pulling a trailer with 6 boats and 2 on the Suburban. At that first switchback, he broke 2 chains and was stuck their for the nigh. By this time, it was dark, still snowing and about 10 of us had to walk to the top, cram into the vehicles we sent up earlier and then camp in the rec room at the local KOA. Early the next morning while the ground was frozen and before the sun could hit the road where our vehicles were stranded, we went to a local auto parts store, grabbed some new tire chains for the Suburban and headed back. Fortunately the road was frozen and with some work, we got all our 4 of our vehicles out before the road became muddy slop again. FUNN TIMES!!

I used to live in Pahrump, Nevada. About 50 miles West of Las Vegas by road. On the map you will fine Highway 52 from Pahrump going over the mountians to Las Vegas. The West side of the mountains can be handled my most 4-wheel drive pickups to reach the top. With a little clearance and care a 2-wheel drive will get you to the top. However, going down the East side requires a properly equipped offroad vehicle because the terrain is quite rough. I was filling the tank on my Jeep on day and the driver of a new Audi convertable asked me where Highway 52 was so he could return to LV. After reallizing what that highway was I told him it was not a road he wanted his Audi on, and that if he tried to go that way he would destroy his car, or at least damage it on the West side of the mountain. He was insistant he was going that way. I can only hope he did not.

Then crunching noises ,and other costly sounds . through the brush comes a dodge k car ,tires so bald the steel cords showing was his only traction . this old man gets out probably late 60's ,with a Busch light in one hand and a joint in his mouth . he sat and fished and told stories. and when it started getting dark he wanted to drive home. we talked him into letting us drive him home, but he did get his car back to the main road.

Nice little jeep but wow! Whatever possessed him to disconnect his sway bar that way?! Sometimes money is better spent on education rather than bolt on equipment! I don't mind overlanding rigs, but do take the time to know the basics in wheeling. Love the team work wrenching at the end! 😂

That advice about GPS should be COMMON SENSE!... sadly that is in very short supply these days. A while back, I saw a quote that said: "Common sense is so rare these days that it is now considered to be a superpower." That pretty much sums it up.

“So I have this metric adjustable wrench”. Lol. I had to rewind and listen to that twice. Love the humor Rory. 😂

Make sure to use the metric adjustable nut rounder on those newer jeeps for maximum nut rounding. Glad it wasn't the left had model that could have been difficult.

About two minutes into the video that was the coolest smoothest cut to an older video. I got confused for a second when I saw the Chevy on the side of the trail.😂😂😂

Good advice on GPS. I've had Google give me bad directions more than once. But then old paper maps did that as well. There are lots of roads on paper maps that no longer exist. Same with Google. I once tried to get directions from my house to somewhere and it told me to take a private road that used to cross a railroad, which I knew that the crossing had been removed. I reported it to Google because I wanted to get good directions from my house. They corrected it. Moral... If any mapping system sends you down a sketchy road report it. Don't accept bad directions as the status quo...

The Rory, Lilly and Mike Show. What Beautiful Landscape you live in. The road is so narrow, that if you aren’t focusing on driving , a split second, you could lose your rig and life. Great tips Rory . Nice to see Lilly along for the ride. 🤙😎

You all are unique. Most "camera men" rarely gets involved in doing "off-trail" repairs. Mike is more than capable of doing it. Has everyone else started following your lead and doing trail repairs. I don't recall Matt or Paul doing that much until you came on the scene. Obvious you existed before Matt started showing you all.
