This is unacceptable. I was just thinking about my childhood today. Although my family wasn't poor, apparently feeding her two children was not a priority to our Mom. Lunch was forty cents, a quarter, a dime and a nickel. I remember waiting for that meal in a Styrofoam to go type of thing at the elementary school I attended. The white Styrofoam stunk, but I ate every bite. It was my first meal of the day and oftentimes the only balanced and filling meal I would get that day. I'm sure, less the weird smell and presentation, that for too many children, this may also be their life and their daily meal. Breakfast wasn't served in the 60's. I know it would have helped me make it to lunch and improved my overall health. Children's brains also need calories and nutrition for proper development.

Even kids from well to do families aren’t fed regularly and it’s even a worse situation for children who have empty refrigerators. I remember when I was in high school that our cafeteria only served one main meal portion and a drink, no sodas so it was either bottled water or Powerade. We didn't get a full meal it was a choice of packaged sandwich, pizza or macaroni and cheese. Even to this day I have no idea why they only served food that way and this was back in 2001. For me I would always bring my own lunch because of it and many others did as well so perhaps they figured that the demographics of the school (middle - upper middle class) didn't justify the budget for a fully funded cafeteria team since families could afford to eat out or prepare food. I could only imagine what it would be like for lower class families who would struggle to provide for their kids a meal to get them through the long day. Very hard to concentrate on class work when you have no energy or focus because your body is constantly in a state of hunger.

School meals should have nothing to do with the pandemic. Many children are underfed all year. I don't see an issue with a parent (or teacher recommendation) being requested. we used to do this. It can be done without stigmatizing the child as many schools have used different ways of utilizing this. I realize staffing for tracking meals, payments, etc. is a big issue. An undernourished child is a bigger more long term concern. We elect our representatives to not only make wise, tough choices, but to ALWAYS serve the most vulnerable in our society. Just stopping a program with no plan forward I'd irresponsible.

Situations change. Your entire life, including income, can change in a single day. Have you honestly never heard of a lay off, or staff reduction to save the company money? Sometimes a family falls on hard times and temporarily needs help. Many children are starving because they live in abusive situations and their parents just won't feed them. People assume that every child is getting the same treatment and upbringing at home. As mentioned some abusive parents have good incomes, they just choose to let their child go hungry. So those children wouldn't be eligible for the free and reduced lunches. All I'm really trying to say here is that the whole "can't afford em, don't have em" thing doesn't work in most cases. And there are children suffering because of it. I'm all for parental responsibility, but you can't just expect every parent to be a good parent, unfortunately.

Say the same when you are at the bottom of the wages pyramid, working two or more jobs to pay the rent or else you go homeless. It's very easy to say "feeding their children it's the parent's responsibility" when you don't think that affordable housing is nonexistent, affordable and good education is nonexistent, and healthcare is for profit. When political decisions keep the wages minimal and labor unions are presented as evil. Just you wait: when you lose your job, when you or someone in your family gets ill from something your insurance doesn't cover or has an accident, you'll find out you won't be able to afford much/good food anymore. Why obesity and diabetes are prevalent among the working classes? Ever wondered why the working classes and the wealthy people aren't the same people? It's not your "hard work" what keeps you on top. It's your good luck so far, or the hard work of the people who work for you. Aren't you, by any chance, born into a wealthy family? You sound so Kardashian... to the point of thinking that *hungry children* in "the best, greatest, wealthiest country in the world" isn't shameful. @@ivangamez9773 Could you have had a good education if your parents couldn't pay for it? (Or, have you tied yourself to debt for years to come?) Could you have had good superior education if your school/high school was under-financed, under-staffed, under-everything, just because you were born in the inner-city or a rural setting? Could you possibly have had good grades if you were too hungry to pay attention to the teacher? What I talk about is not defeatism. It's reality. Meritocracy is great, when everyone starts from the same point and has equal opportunities, when your talents and will to work is the only difference. Making policies that assure many kids will be hungry at school (again, in the wealthiest, greatest, "best country in the world") is short-sighted from a mere investment point of view: ensuring many kids will change education for whatever gives they money to eat ASAP, will result in masses of unskilled workers never able to get good wages perpetuating the circle of inescapable poverty with their own children, increase in crime, and, if you care about that, an even greater need for qualified immigrant workers to take the specialized jobs Americans can't fill. Which is already happening. May I signal that *making sure* kids go hungry when you can prevent it is, let's say, cruel and inhuman? I highly recommend you to try it. Have for breakfast a coffee/a glass of milk and a bun or a PB sandwich. Don't eat anything all day long until the afternoon/night, when you'll have, maybe, fries, burgers, or any kind of the junk food your minimal wage family can afford because fresh veggies/fruit, fish, meats, etc. are too expensive. Do that for an entire school term. Then, come back and tell us all about defeatism.

I volunteered for 5 years at a grade school that my granddaughter attended. The school had free breakfast and lunches for those that could not afford them which is great, however I did notice that the breakfast that was high in sugar was a big hit, the lunch that was based on guide lines from the Obama period was basically a failure because of the "healthy" foods that got forced on the schools, I think that it is safe to say that about 50% of the food served for lunch got put in the trash can, this is our tax dollar at work. Another reason for the waste of food is that is basically fast foods that came to the school frozen to be heated or in a package that required water to be added then heated. The lunch food was basically horrible. The tax payers are paying for this so I say fix the kids something that the majority of them will as throwing it in the trash can does not do the kids any good. The school staff would not eat the food. This is just another example of washington does not have a clue what goes on at the local level.

I don't understand why everyone's freaking out. Meals don't need to be freely given to every single kid out there - kids whose parents make hundreds of thousands of dollars a year can afford to buy their own meals. The tax payers are just lining rich families' pockets when we pay for meals they could easily afford. Meals should be provided to kids whose families struggle to pay, not every single child.

That’s not completely false however there are families who make good money but are drowning in financial obligations to the point where there’s barely any money left after paying bills. Should their kids starve because of that?

Look at what you ate for breakfast today. Unless you went to Wendy's or something I garuantee you'd find it cost you under a dollar if you did the math. Yet I bet these programs cost about $20 per student. No one in America is genuinely too poor to afford breakfast. Just let that money trickle down.
