It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZbin experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
This time, as we test a 1991 Ford Fiesta 1.3 Flight, we cope with a rather reluctant clutch, deal with a manual choke, try (and fail) to keep out of the wind, talk about 1990s Ford plastics and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

Oh what a trip down memory lane. I recall one of my school teachers having a Fiesta Flight, they looked good with the two tone blue and grey and beefy (for the time) alloy wheels. Electric windows, a glove box and a rev counter were pure luxury in a small car at this time. I always liked the look of the MK3. As a child my parents used to hire a base spec model and we would do a car boot sale to pay for the car hire and a day at the seaside.

Yes, this would have seemed very luxurious in 1991, I imagine. I am amazed at how cheap these are, actually. I suppose that it is because they made so many. The majority would have been the lesser models, I imagine, though.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting Buyers of modern classics probably seek out the RS, XR2 and possibly the Ghia models. I've noticed with other cars that the halo models can be three or four times the value of the more run of the mill spec cars.

@@markonmotoring , yes, that's the same with a lot of car models from this time, I think.

Oh Sir, thank you for taking me down memory lane, my late grandfather had a later revised 1994 mark 3 Fiesta Equipe special edition, so this takes me back growing up, the hazard warning light switch on my grandfather's fiesta and my dad's escorts, the green glow of the instrument panel, the little ashtray in the rear. You also had freedom or duet depending on what dealer region you were in.
@lloydvehicleconsulting

Sir, I think that the most region specific special edition was the Meridian, which tied into the local ITV franchise in the area where I grew up. Thank you again for watching!

It's a very nostalgic car, isn't it? I can imagine they must have been popular as hire cars all over the place.

The list price of a Fiesta 1.0 Popular at launch in March / April 1989 was £5,199. 😁 A bit of useless information there, retained since age 11. A PE teacher at my old high school had one of these in the early 1990s (same school that KZbinr Ashens attended). It could either had been a Flight or a Ghia. It looked like this in style. Is that blanking plug to the left of the steering column where the manual choke would go on lesser models? It's in that location on a mark 4 Escort. When reading out the trim levels I wondered if you would forget the Frascati limited edition but you didn't.

Sir, we do like Dr Ashen... An inspiration for many of us who have KZbin channels! Mark III Fiestas were just everywhere back in the day, weren't they? I think I showed the choke lever in this one, it is buried on the left hand side of the column as opposed to being on the dashboard, where one would expect it to be. Indeed, sir, did not forget the Frascati, I saw one on the Isle of Wight next month!

My Fiesta Mk3 experience is of my Brother who owned a 1990 5 door 1.1 L which was 4 speed, had light steering with its 145 tyres, roomy and had a nice ride. It was very basic though it looked particularly well in red. Its steering was nowhere near as direct as a Peugeot 205 or a Citroën AX. My Sister in Law owned an almost identical car to this Fiesta Flight that you drove. It was 1992 1.3 Ghia 5 door in an almost identical metallic blue, except that it had the CVT transmission. Its steering was disappointingly heavy with its 165 tyres but it did handle well on the wider tyres and the steering lightened up on the move. The dash layout was lovely, the seats were supportive, the ride was comfortable and the engine felt strong but a bit strange with the CVT. It was economical though. It did feel luxurious compared to the 1.1L though. It looked good too, all Mk3 Fiestas looked good. The Corsa B only really came on the scene late in the life of the Mk3 Fiesta. The Mk4 Fiesta was a much nicer drive than the Corsa. Though overall the Corsa seemed a better package. Most Fiesta Mk3 owners were happy with it and bought another Fiesta.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting Жыл бұрын
Sir, the Fiesta does seem to be quite susceptible to the type of wheels fitted in terms of the steering. We have driven a Mark II with the CTX transmission, as you know. The Corsa B feels much more modern, although the Mark IV and Mark V Fiesta were also surprisingly good, despite still being related to the Mark III.

I think the main problem Fords of this era had was the engines, especially compared to contemporary Vauxhall rivals. I noticed you commented on the noise in your test drive. My grandma ran a H plate 1.1LX (the CVT auto variant) from new for a while and I remember it was like a sewing machine, especially as my dad was running contemporary Astras and my mum Novas. The Vauxhall engines just seemed so much quieter, smoother and more eager.

In my opinion all the Ford engines in the 80s and early 90s were a letdown, apart from Cosworths of course. Fiesta, Escort, Sierra and Granada/Scorpio could have been so much nicer with decent, modern engines instead of the old and unrefined Kent, Pinto and CVH iron lumps. The competitors were way ahead and Ford only started to keep up with them by introducing the Zetec units.
@Richard-Bullock
@Richard-Bullock Жыл бұрын
@@Timico1000 I think the 2.0i DOHC engine used in late Sierras and Granadas was a decent engine. But other than the Cosworth engine, the rest were absolute garbage.

Yes, I have driven a 1.1 CTX Fiesta with the Valencia engine, which was a few years older than this (link in the description below). My theory about Vauxhall being on top of their game with engines from the launch of the Astra Mark I until the mid-1990s still stands, I think.

I had a poverty spec H reg 1.0 in the early 2000's, the engine was tickety and loud but I don't remember having a single problem with it reliability wise. Problem was it was underpowered but it never gave me any mechanical grief.

Had one of these as my first car back in 2001. Mine was a 3 door though. I went to see the British Grand Prix in 2002 and went to see Oasis in Finsbury Park on the same day in it. It took me and my mates on a couple of holidays and then I got a Maestro when the head gasket went. It cost me 200 quid off a little old lady.

The blank on the dash is for the speaker balance control on high end spec models with different stereos, the 2 blanks on the dash at the side of the heated rear screen and rear Fog is for the front heated screen on Ghias, and front fogs on models with those fitted, and the only mk3 model that didnt have split folding rear seat was the Popular, you would have seen it has a split rear seat when you had the boot open as you can see in the video, passenger airbag was optional from 93 on ward, drivers standard, power steering also became an option,
@lloydvehicleconsulting

I think that power steering would have been an extremely useful option, along with the heated front screen (probably a bit of a first at that time)...

@@lloydvehicleconsulting ford brought out the heated front screen in 1985 on the first Mk3 Granadas, along with ABS and then was fitted to mk4 Escorts, Orions, and Sierras, they are a huge bonus in winter weather, ive had a good few of them and they work a treat,

Looks like the manual choke has been hidden, not surprising considering how carburettors were looked down upon in the early 90s, could be worse, had a cortina mk5 with auto choke, rubbish! Bring on the single point fuel injection

Yes, this would have been one of the last Fiestas on a manual choke, as they switched to fuel injection the next year. Didn't get any more horsepower subsequently, however....

Hello Alan oddly enough the Choke is HIDDEN to the left hand side of the steering column , i know this as i had a 1991 Fiesta Sunray ltd edition a few years back had it a year and put it in for an mot and asked them if they could adjust the AUTOCHOKE did,nt know where to look when they showed me the lever !!
