It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive KZbin experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
This time, as we test a 1991 Hyundai X2 Pony (Excel) 1.3 LS 3dr, we discover bits of missing trim, we encounter a reluctant carburettor, discover areas which should not have been repainted, discuss old Protons (once again) and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

Yes, sir, could have been the original Pony that was sold here from around 1982, or the X1 based on the Excel. It's ridiculous how this has survived.

I’m sure that i am not the only one on this planet that have some love for these old Korean cars. I appreciate them so much! And i hope more people does! Very interesting stoey About that the pony/excel was so populair in Canada. If i think about Canada i think about long distances and heavy weather and heavy conditions for cars. I didn’t expect the pony/excel being so popular in a country like Canada. In our small Netherlands oh yes. The pony excel and lantra was a hit! Allot of car for the money. Mostly in sedan’s and electric windows! I don’t know if the Lantra and excel/pony came with a/c here. My neighbors 92/93 excel sedan 1.5 glx didn’t had a/c. And my fathers 1995 Hyundai lantra 1.5 glx also not. But they had electric windows and sunroof! Maybe they didn’t had Hyundais delivered. Only in America?

We have had plenty of Lantras on the channel, sir, as you know. We do enjoy them around here. That's right, the Excel was a popular car in North America. Air conditioning was not at all common in smaller cars in Europe in the early to mid-1990s.

@@lloydvehicleconsulting i can’t imagine a family in canada. In heavy snow storms. -20 Celsius in a Hyundai excel. But if it was like that, they do have their adventures! I know the 1995 Hyundai Elantra had a/c in the usa . Here in europe i saw a/c in the since the 1996 1997 Lantra’s my father back than had a loaner 1997 lantra when his 1995 lantra was to the dealer for service. And than loaner lantra had a 1.6 16v engine and a/c! He liked that 1.6 engine much more that his own 1.5

Looks great in red. Glad this was saved from the crusher. That blank on this Hyundai's instrument binnacle is reminiscent of the baser Allegro's 'gunsight' . Hyundai we're slowly getting their act together with every model revision and replacement. The original Pony only had rear lap belts when made compulsory in 1987 for UK sales iirc. From my point of view the 4 door saloon versions bore an uncanny resemblance to the original Rover 200 series from the side profile
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
It's crazy to be offered something like this that is so rare, sir! The blank was fantastic, wasn't it? The X2 facelift was, I would say, an improvement on what was there before, and the second facelift did make it look much more modern too. The saloon ones sorted of looked like an SD3, you are right.

I regret not buying an X2 now. I gave up the opportunity of all that space and trim for the black plastic bumpers, 4 speeds, boomy cabin, tiny boot, more compliant ride and sharp handling of a 1992 Peugeot 106 1.1 with a choke. I do like the three spoke steering wheel though.

I remember whilst attending a school for the blind in Northern Ireland in the late 80s, our school had one of these cars and it was bright red. We have many happy rides in the car. From what I can remember everything inside it was pure beige interior. The seats were sort of a mixture of vinyl and corduroy type. I remember one time one of the pupils was able to lift the car and tilted up slightly and put it back again. They were pretty lightweight cars.

Thank you for sharing your memories of these older Hyundais from back in the 1980s, what an amazing story! The earlier X1 Pony was probably the one with the beige interior, I would imagine. Absolutely right, no weight to them at all.

In the 90s, Hyundai offered an X2 special edition called the 'Spritza' at a very attractive price, so I found myself owning one in metallic green, which came with some garish orange decals down the flanks that I had removed by the dealer. I found the 1.3 engine a bit lethargic, but it was nice and easy to drive and it was really well put together, compared to the likes of Fords and Vauxhalls of that era. That good quality of build fed into excellent reliability, a big selling point. I traded it in for a new 1.3 Hyundai Accent several years later, I can't remember if it was the same engine tweaked or if it was a new engine, but the Accent felt much punchier.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 11 ай бұрын
I have actually driven a first generation Accent on No Budget Reviews, I think that it was around the same time as I tested this X2. The engine in the Accent is Hyundai's own unit, known as the Alpha engine from memory. The ones in the X2 were still Mitsubishi units, as used in cars like the Proton 1.3 and 1.5 and the Lancer. That special edition sounds... interesting!

@@lloydvehicleconsulting The X2 Spritza was a bit of a no brainer, for it was basically the 1.3 Sonnet specification, but with several added extras, namely the special metallic paint, fancy wheel covers, and a decent Clarion stereo radio cassette, all for less than the Sonnet. Oh, and those awful orange decals as well.

An excellent review sir, what a lovely car, and this era on, started to show that Hyundai cars weren't bad. A bit of the pace compared to where they are now, but as a sensible priced reliable small family transport it was great!
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
They were derided at the time for being terrible, but, to be honest, this really isn't that bad. In some ways, this feels much more modern than a first generation Proton, with which it shares many components.

Called the Magma engine in the Proton I seem to remember from my old Proton. Another good review Joseph, certainly don't see those old Hyundai around anymore, in fact I don't think the we're all that popular even in 1991.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, Orion/Magma/MPi, all those names were used, and we will come across that engine in a Proton again soon.... These weren't very popular when this car was new, Hyundai had yet to make serious progress over here, I think.

No doubt at the time many would have turned there nose up at this but looking back it was reasonably equipped for the time and looked modern with its colour coded bumpers The mock rev counter is a bit of a 'Look at what you could have won' moment. Very strange to have bothered putting marking in but no numbers or actually rev counter. The warning lights actually look modern for the time as well. I wonder if any markets got a crazy hot three door version as I imagine that would be a little bit cool in a strange sort of way.
@lloydvehicleconsulting
@lloydvehicleconsulting 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you could have easily tuned the good old Mitsubishi Orion engine for some hot hatch action, but I don't think sporty Hyundais really existed at this time. The X2 facelift (and the one which followed) were quite successful in terms of hiding the age of the design. The 1.5 GSi was the one to have, though.

Is it me or does this guy look Scared while he's driving? They only sold the 1.5 l Here in the US. When I was a little kid my mom bought a brand new 88 mitsubishi press LS. It was a cranberry colored Top of the line version with every option but with a 5 speed instead of The auto. I remember how excited we were the day she bought it and how nice it was but but after blowing 2 head gaskets, Chronically overheating, And 4 different AC compressors all under warranty my mom dumped the car after owning at 9 months. Actually mitsubishi had to buy the car back from my mom under Florida's new car lemon law. These work everywhere down here in Miami Is back in the day . They came in some some pretty cool colors I remember My dad calling them jelly beans. The premium floor was glued to the seat not sditched and I remember even theven the interior falling apart even though it was only she and I and she Tried to baby the car So it would last. And almost as quickly as the time it took for them to popup all over the roads down here in South Florida they disappeared almost as quickly. I always figured the heat was too hard on their weak cooling systems because that was definitely one of the problems with ours. If the AC worked which was not often it would bog the engine down so much that it would cause the engine to overheat which happened multiple times and why they all blow head gaskets. Just slowly coast down the block a few times until the engine cools down. One time my mom and I were coming out of Sears and the battery was dead because the cooling fan had runfor over an hour after my mom had stopped and shut it off while we went Inside to go shopping. After we had the car a couple months I remember a friend's mom picked me up from school in her 4 year old corolla. I remember asking my mom if that was a fancy car Because it was so quiet and the ride was so soft.
