This still might be Australia's most effective anti-smoking campaign. It's full of sensible reasons to quit.
We managed to recruit many popular personalities from Bert Newton to Spike Milligan to donate their services.
These (and many others in the series) were written & directed by me and produced by Trish Hosking (nee Burton).
An important part of the campaign was 'The Pledge'. Everyone wanting to quit would make a pledge and, so their family and all their friends (and even strangers) would know they were on their quitting journey, we gave them a Pledge badge to wear - of fingers crossed. (The two fingers that would have previously held a cigarette.)
I hope those that have held me in such low esteem for my Dunhill ads here on my KZbin channel with give me at least a few brownie points for this campaign :)
This is probably the only chance I have to call out the head of the Anti -Cancer Council at the time, Dr Nigel Gray, who wasn't interested in any campaign - no matter how effective it may be in convincing smokers to quit - unless it talked about cancer. When I tried to point out the mind-bending stupidity of this, his aggressive response was : 'Look at this, Marcus, this is our NAME - The Anti-Cancer Council of Australia. What a turkey!
