10:40 I'm a sailor too! I saw Kennedy Island as you passed. Told my wife "that's Kennedy Island " . I told her the history... she'd known about it. ...BUT I am a history buff and knew what it looked like...also knew about the little resort. She asked " how the f do you know that"...meanwhile she spent 35 yrs pissed off at me delving into stuff. Those Russell Islands you stayed at. Bull Hasley orchestrated the taking back of those. Some very young men had to slug it out to push the enemy to their last little point. The Japanese were very effective evacuating thousands from that very area. The Americans were putting a ship in the water every day, planes came off the assembly line faster than they were shot down. I'm happy you sail through the world in peace ... it was paid for by good men. So glad to see you there. I have had a C&C 30 for 25 yrs...at least 50k solo if I did a nm Yer doing good...keep on. Yamototo plane is in jungle near Bougainville ...little bit of a trek in. ..took down by lightenings out of Guadacanal. Not a major turning point in war for after midway and Guadacanal there was no coming back. Japan could never produce war material like the US.

Holly, you can make a remote control for your Autohelm. You need a long 3-wire cable and a 3-way switch. It plugs into the side of your Autohelm. My dad made this many years ago and then you can steer from the bow.

Hello Hollie! My Oh My Sanbis and the surrounding village and people 💙By chance we were the first guests to stay at the new "Lodge" in 2011 and were blown away how they completed the construction with the limited machinery etc. Hans who established Sanbis was a sailor himself - wonder if his sail boat is still there? We kayaked from Sanbis over to JFK Island and were buzzed by the current and incredibly deep waters. That was some serious brave treacherous swim by JFK. Had the most incredible experience with Pattison (Sanbis fishing guide).. we spent the day on his family's island and traditional dugout canoes, with too many other family members to count, barely floating. They made a fire, caught and cooked us fresh lobsters with fish and root vegetables. The spirit of their generosity is forever in our hearts.

Wow, the sunset at 10:33 was one of the most beautiful ever ! I was 14 when a very dramatic thing happened in my 7th grade classroom. A knock at the door, the teacher went out for a moment, and walked back in and told us what had happened to John F Kennedy. We were so upset and I am still upset to this day when I remember this. It should have been about 1964.

Holly, do you have any backups to your electronic navigation? There was a boat in Huahine that was lost when the skipper's iPad died. Despite your successful navigating of the reefs in this episode, shit can happen; and of course in this situation the weather was calm and you could get an idea of the reefs and bommies in clear water. Several boats are lost every year grounding on reefs in gales in the Red Sea, where even paper charts may not be sufficient, same in Fiji. I'd want backups, but I'm a coward.🙂 I do love your posts and spirit of adventure and don't mean to nag. You're an impressive sailor.

hey holly!, loved seeing how you plotted through the corals and the shallows on that app: whats it called? and obviously it must locate your position on it and track you, or else you would have to transfer or somehow overlay it onto navionics? would love to know how that works. currently sailing pacific mexico so not all that important for me right now, but it will be when i head south and west to follow the trades...

So, to circumnavigate, you are forced into a decision -- go through the Suez Canal, or go around the southern tip of Africa. Is it an easy decision? Which way is safer? If around South Africa, would you cross the Atlantic and head for Brazil? Or up the West coast of Africa?

Terrific episode. You and Dan: role models for all of us. Good synopsis of PT 109. Kennedy invited the two men to his inauguration in 1961. The odd fishing thingamabob. There was all kinds of DIY stuff off the west coast of Luzon, Philippines, including the buoys for the official Three Mile Limit (they looked homemade.) We saw what looked like a DIY life raft. It had the name of a boat that was connected to a nearby island. It was just a folly. Saw another one, similar pile of boards, same boat name. Fishing gear could be a bit odd. Nets often had no clear ends. The fishermen would wave and make all kinds of gestures. I'm really good at this (otherwise I'd still be lost somewhere in China) but I could almost never figure out what they were saying. Go this way, or go that way? Yes. We ran over some fishing gear, which I'm ashamed of. Heading farther out absolutely seems the universal best thing to do. Far from land and at night, fishing boats often turn on their AIS is we are heading towards them or their nets, but turn it off if we aren't. I think they want to keep their position hidden from other fishing boats. So an AIS that disappears and is probably a fishing boat, seems to be a good sign. Fair winds.

I guess you havent got up to Honiara yet?. I lived there as a kid 1968/70. Giso was ok then as my parents friend and family moved there for their 2 yr contract. I assume you know about steering clear of sea snakes, lion and stone fish with their poison spines. Also dont touch nor handle cone shape sea shells due fatal toxic dart. Also live coral has protective infectious or toxic slime on it. The local Solomon Islanders can advise you. Btw Solomon Island people dont always like being filmed or videod. Ask first. We used to have shark attacks around Honiara coast and on Malaita. We used to sit on the beach side of the Mendana Hotel Honiara and watch the local sharks cruising in at dusk, in the little bay with the yacht club next door. Never swam there, only once in a bay north and chased out by a sea snake, very poisonous. Honiara is alot bigger now with shops hotels etc. I went to St Johns school and King George 6th High School,. very good memories. btw cuts and scratches can festor inside 24 hrs . lol fire ants on grass and done that dance!. lol. Take care. Laurie NZ
