@@Th3Gam3925 "Experts say No Country for Old Men’s Anton Chigurh is the most realistic villain Science settles it: Anton Chigurh was actually a psychopath. Here's what else researchers found." "Of over 120 movie psychopaths observed, psychiatrists have deduced that the most by far realistic portrayal of a psychopath is Javier Bardem's portrayal as the cold and calculating Anton Chigurh in No Country For Old Men." "Anton Chigurh from 'No Country for Old Men' voted "most realistic psychopath ever"... Putting the maniacal laugh and expressive theatrics to one side to portray the psychopath, forensic psychiatrist Samuel Leistedt names the performance as the most realistic depiction of the mental illness in all of cinema. “They don’t know what an emotion is,” the psychiatrist stated in a real-life study that led Leistedt and his colleague Paul Linkowski to spend three years watching 400 movies in search of the most realistic depiction of psychopaths in cinema."

Psychology is not an exact science. The idea that there is something it means to have an accurate depiction of psychopathy is sensationalist at best. Any pathologist worth their salt knows no two cases present in exactly the same way even for well known physical ailments, it would be bizzare for this not to apply in something as nebulous as psychopathy.
@Washanuga

That's only based on two forensic psychiatrist colleagues who watched 400 films looking for realistic depicitons of psychopathy. Not exactly hard science, but still fun. Norman Bates and Hannibal Lecter, though great characters, are not realistic. One of the psychiatrists said Chigurh reminded him of two real-life professional hit men he interviewed. They also rated Henry from Portrait of a Serial Killer highly,

Yes, Marion got the theme of the movie... I was waiting for him to say "fate" but he said it in so many words. A person can get cancer, or get injured killing a steer or meet a psychopathic personification of death while driving and end up getting killed. It's a pessimistic view of life showing that even though people think themselves the heroes in their own life stories, in reality having a good conscience and taking water to a wounded man can get you killed. Even Chigurh ended up not being an invincible symbol of death in a random car crash near end of movie... fate or chance symbolized by him flipping his coin can also strike him.

Chigurh killed people who posed a threat to him or his mission of him getting back the money. He gave coin flips to a man who did not necessarily pose a threat - informing the police about the Dallas plates if asked about any strangers - or being fair in killing Llewelyn’s wife. By giving her a coin flip he was taking the decision out of his own hands and leaving it up to fate or The Fates of Greek mythology whom he thinks he ultimately works for; Chigurh is an agent of Fate. At the gas station Chigurh is stunned by the idea that the owner married into the situation he now finds himself in with the toss all those years ago by marrying the daughter of the owner of the station. He’s marvelling at the incredibly involved, long term threads The Fates have woven to get him and 5he quarter to this point in space and time.. He’s relieved when the call comes out in the owner’s favour because he doesn’t really want to kill the guy, he just wants to find the money. There’s some Free Will vs Determinism philosophical ideas woven into this movie as well as the war in Vietnam which ended in 1975. Carson and Llewelyn were both in Vietnam, Carson was a Colonel and is now retired as the restaurant parking lot, two Sheriffs chat reveals. The CIA used to fund Black Ops by selling drugs out of SE Asia in the USA. The movie is set in 1980 and the CIA is set up in office towers with conveniently missing floors. Who else is going to have tracers available to put in satchels full of money? The title ‘No Country For Old Men’ is taken from a line in a poem by Yates called ‘Sailing To Byzantium’ which is about an aging guy trying to come to terms with his own mortality. There are things going on in this film involving The Aeneid which have to do with foundation myths which are used to to justify horrible acts of violence like war, empire, and genocide. In any case, I’ve seen this movie over 50 times and notice or learn something new every time. Thanks for making videos eh.

All the Coen brothers films are very quirky. Try the very first REAL full film they released. Blood Simple. When you watch it you'll see they were establishing the crazy path they have gone down with films. It's so good that, not only did I buy the Blu-ray I also bought a copy of the actual script. It's "No Country for Old Men' because society has changed so that older people no longer understand the (new) rules. Criminals were more predictable and had more "honor." Now it is just about stupid things and the "old generation" doesn't understand the level of violence and the reasons. Chigurh is the symbol of how violence no longer comes with any rhyme or reason. It just happens over stupid and petty things like a coin flip or because he "made a promise." The old guy in the wheelchair basically said, the world has changed and will always be changing, and it's not going to wait for you to catch up. It will move forward without you. It is also why the Sheriff said he feels "outmatched." He can't keep up with the level and amount of violence anymore.
@MrRondonmon
@MrRondonmon Жыл бұрын
Not really, the book was set in "1979-80" so its not about our modern times vs. Old Times per se, even though it is, if we are thinking from 1980 LOOKING BACKWARD in time. The Sheriffs of those days were seeing a Border gone mad because of all the cartels selling of dope, whereas 20-40 years before a lot of those sheriffs barely had to arrest anyone for a violent crime, now it was chaos. So, you get it, but you have to looked 50 years back in time to really get it.

@@MrRondonmon I think, yes really. The film was made in 2007, whatever it is saying about the world - it is saying it about the world of 2007. No cell phones, no new cars, the car that burned up was a 77, they were using a "Transistor to track the money with" LOL, you have to be kidding me to not know this was set in 1980. Also, these "tuff wars at the border" had bee going on 30 plus years by 2007, it was only NEW at that point in time (1980ish) modern Sheriffs are equipped with Machine Guns and Armor piercing bullets, etc. etc.

If you think of Chiguhr as Death, the movie shows us that our mortality is inevitable. Chiguhr is relentless, cold, determined and indifferent all at the same time. We often think about our mortality - how we will die - especially as we become "old men", but death does not care. Death does not care if you were good or bad or uninvolved or a bystander or just a elderly mother who got cancer.

Yes, I came to compliment Marion also, that is excellent insight on the point of this movie. Most do not understand and don't bother to work it out. Two details: you do know whether the wife was killed... when does Anton look at his boots? And, the last scene, so perfect for Marion's analysis: like the God comment earlier, the sheriff dreams his father went ahead of him, to make the world warm and comfortable... and, then he woke up. An amazing final line. Good job, Marion!

In the late 70s early 80s Mexican border areas saw a rise in crime because of the cartels who were smuggling drugs into the USA. Really good reaction, guys. You both made some very good points about this movie. I think Joy's point is spot-on about how people act as though the world is never going to change...but it does and we cannot stop it. Marion's point is also really excellent. Look at the randomness of the violence (highlighted by Chiguhr's coin tosses) in this movie to the point where even the cold-blooded murderer, who lives by a perverted code of his own, is just as subject to the random nature of violence in this existence. The characters try to bring order to the world, each in their own way, and all fail.

you were right.. carson WAS a dangerous guy. the characters in this movie are either wolves or cattle. Chigurh happened to be the strongest wolf, but I'd argue the Sheriff might have been just as strong; but he's an old wolf and he trails behind it all. (no country for old wolves). Moss hurt Chigurh physically which is no small feat, but I'd argue that his wife Carla Jean hurt Chigurh the most. she refused to call the coin toss and told him the unvarnished truth "the coin don't have no say, it's just you," which imo shook his whole worldview and weakened his faith in his insane "code." that's why he got in that wreck after he kills her

People want to talk about how good this movie is critically, and I agree. BUT -- I hated this the first time I watched it. It made me so angry. I thought we were getting ready for this really realistic but epic shootout for the end. And everything was so well done, but the twist mid way, I was lost. And that intense feeling stayed with me. It made me think that I was wrong for not liking it, so I rewatched. And rewatched. And rewatched (not at once, but over the years). Every time, I'm more appreciative of how it shuns normal film conventions and isn't afraid to confront the ephemeral nature of true violence and the chaos around it. But it took a while to draw that out, and it took prodding from outside. Not one I have in any normal rotation, but a great piece of challenging cinema that creates interesting conversations. It's dry, but if you stick with it and can get over the twist, it's really got a lot to say on big themes.

Anton Chigurh is armed with a semi-automatic shotgun with a sound suppressor attached to the end of the barrel. I don't know if this weapon is real or fictional. I guess that you could build this weapon, but that the suppressor would not muffle the blast from a shot gun well at all. Mr. Moss has a Winchester model 1897 pump action shot gun. Both are 12 gauge, and both men fire 00 buckshot (9 32-caliber pellets per shell).

Fantastic reaction for both of you. This movie is hard to track. And you are absolutely right there are no heroes in this movie, it's realistic that way. Marian (sorry don't know the spelling), I've been wondering where you were from and whether you were in the military since I first saw you both. My mystery about where Joy was from was answered over a year ago when she mentioned it. : ) You mentioned Romania, and shells, so I'm assuming you were in the military (or maybe a policeman), and I guessed you were from a Baltic country (first guess was Russia, but changed that pretty soon). When Chigurh goes into a room, turns the light off leaves and quickly re-enters, turning the light on, he is practicing the act of forcibly entering such a room (since the rooms are the same). He now knows where people would be and knows where people waiting for him would be. He knows where he needs to stand to shoot into different parts of the room etc. Chigurh closes the shower curtain before shooting the man to stop from getting hit by the blood. When Carson Wells says "I counted the floors from the street to here and one was missing", it's a joke about how a lot of buildings with 13+ floors label floor 13 and floor 14 because of the bad luck associated with the number 13. I think when Chigurh blows up the car then walks into the drug store he does so to get prescription items without a prescription. He can't show up at the hospital shot, to get the prescriptions because that would cause the police to get involved. It is never verified for sure whether Chigurh killed Carla Jean, but I think he did. He is obviously checking his boots for blood as he leaves the house.

The # 13 is considered bad luck. So when they build skyscrapers the elevator has no 13th floor.....10,11,12,14,15... ect Did anyone else notice that the money was all $1 with a $100 on top. Someone was pulling a fast one at the drug deal. That's why it went sideways.

McCarthy's book is just amazing, by the way. As are all of his books. Even though the Coen brothers essentially just translated it word for word to the screen, if you have seen the film, it's still worth the read.

I think this movie and Billy Elliot have the most incredible final scenes. I love Tommy Lee Jones recounting his dreams - just a beautiful and lyrical way to end the story. I'm a huge Cormac McCarthy fan, and I'm not surprised he came up with this awesome ending.

Anton is the personification of Fate. He's generous with the coin toss, giving people the opportunity to change it. Moss represents Chance, it was by this he found the money etc. Sheriff Bell represents Order, but when Chance meets Fate, he feels "overmatched," he has no choice but to bow out, hence No Country For Old Men. Ps. Heads on the coin toss is always right cuz the point is if you use your HEAD, you won't end up on the TAIL end of the barrel.

The kids on their bikes, with cards in the spokes. Kids. One gives the shirt off his back, then takes the "blood money" (before the 80s it would be really hard for a kid to spend a $100 bill, especially with blood on it, because the people who handled money were adults) - In the 80s, with all the franchises and malls, kids became the one's who handled money - After the blood money was accepted, and they started arguing about it... they were corrupted.

You say there is no hero, yet you understood that the movie was really about Sheriff Tom Bell. If you must have a hero, it's the Sheriff. At the beginning, he says, "I'll be a part of this world." Yet after this business with Llewellyn, he retires . . . because the nature of crime has changed, has left him behind. And you ask about the ending. There are two dreams. The first is about the past. The second is about the future. "And then I woke up."

The author of this story really focuses on the concept of fate in his stories. What's interesting is when "the good guy" tries to get help from a stranger, he's told to hand over money, but "the bad guy" gets handed a shirt for no charge right after the car accident. It's an injustice, but that's fate. Brutal reality. Some people feel they are owed a good outcome when they play by the rules but you could be an absolute angel and life could still strike you down in the most henious way and bless those who are complete monsters. This writer's stories have basically shattered my worldview and I don't know if it was for the better 😂
