The first dream was the sheriff's way of grieving over not being able to locate the money or help. The second dream is his way of letting go and moving on with his life. When Indians used to travel in the snow at night the elders would ride ahead because they knew the land better and they would carry embers from the last fire inside an animal horn. So he was taking comfort in knowing that soon he will be with his father again and won't have to try to make sense of a world he no longer understands.

I love it when a movie subverts expectations and this one has several of those moments. This movie is based on a novel of the same name by Cormack McCarthy, probably one of the greatest modern American writers. His writing style is designed to let you flow right through his books, and any time it starts to throw a lot of detail at you it just tells your brain to slow down and pay attention all of a sudden because something important is happening. He usually has to tell his editors to undo 'corrections' because the way he writes isn't technically grammatically correct, but he writes them that way for a reason and it works with his formula. The content of his books are all about the nature of evil. This one in particular is about how evil has become a whole new kind of monster, and the sheriff just feels like he's too old to evolve and keep up with it. Blood Meridian, and The Road are also really great novels by him, the latter got a film starring Viggo Mortenson.

I dunno how many other people suggested this but I know I did in the comments of the "Sicario" review. I want to add a few things. One, thank you for taking our suggestions with what is arguably one of the best, most suspenseful movies ever made. Two, I suggest coming back and watching it a few more times with a break in between each. The reason I suggest this is because each time you will continue to notice little nuances that you didn't see before. You notice how there is almost NO music through the whole movie. You see details in Brolin's character as he develops. You begin to ask yourself questions. You begin to analyze. This movie is one of VERY few that will occupy a lot of real estate in your head. Edit: A long running theme in "No Country" is fate and how your choices can change your future for both the better and worse. And I'm not sure if you've seen it or not or possibly done a review on it already but if you haven't, check out "The Wrestler". Mickey Rourke's best movie, bar none. A true tear jerker, too. I am not above saying I get quite misty in the end.
@glenmcdonald3752 жыл бұрын
A Mickey Rourke note: the Wrestler is a very good movie. Worth checking our or reviewing and was his "comeback" movie after being blacklisted for passing on Hollywood and its lifestyle... But, as a Rourke fan I'd say his earlier work outshines the Wrestler. Angel Heart is proby his best. Diner, and Pope of Greenwich Village gets honorable mention, and the Barfly is an odd movie, but a cult classic. Imo

Ultimately, the Sheriff gives up, and reminisces about how things were different back in the day, but his friend reminds him that the world has always been this way, the people of the past dealt with suffering just as we do now, there never were the "good old days", there is No Country for Old Men.

The genius of Chiguhr as a character is, although he is clearly psychotic and evil, he has principles. If someone stood in his way, or crossed him, or called a coin flip wrong: no question, they were dead. Other than that he was pure methodical. The old lady in the motel wouldn't give up any info on Moss, and although he could have killed her, there was someone else there and it would have impeded his mission, so he stood down. Also, and its clearer in the book, he saw himself as the arbiter of life and death, but in the end, simply being distracted by those kids on the bikes nearly saw fate take him out in a car accident. Even if he does play God with the lives of others, he realised he doesn't have any control over his own mortality. A really strange and unique character arc. Classic character, classic performance by Javier Bardem. Great reaction as usual, y'all.
@sethleon21582 жыл бұрын
Chiguhr acts on principle (the coin decides), and thinks nothing of killing as the coin decides the fate not he. The young wife also acts on principle and is willing to die for it (it's you who decides-not the coin). Belief in a degree of human freedom (will) separates the two.
