In 2005, acclaimed American author Cormac McCarthy released one his most famous novels, a brisk read called No Country For Old Men. Set in 1980 in Texas' sprawling border region, No Country For Old Men is all about chance and consequence set amongst the backdrop of a brewing drug war that, in modern times, we know all too well. Our audience voted for us to cover this topic -- one about money, violence, love, and happenstance -- and we did so from two angles: We watched the movie, as you requested, but we also read the book, which is quite different in a number of ways. We're absolutely thrilled to talk about the Coen Brothers' award-winning film and the novel it was based upon alike. Just remember to call the coin.

Yes! I'm a HUGE Cormac McCarthy fan. He's my favorite writer by a mile. He has two books coming out later this year. They're the first books he's published since 2006 when The Road came out. I'm so pumped about them! This adaptation is about as good as you can get when it comes to adapting one of his books. The Coens did a wonderful job. I'd love to see you guys do a podcast on Blood Meridian someday.

Also wanted to support the the question that came in about TLoU taking inspiration from from this film. Bruce and Neil have an interview together talking about seeing the movie and coming out loving it. They wanted the tension from the 1v1 scenes between Lou and Sugar.

You should watch Sicario if you like No Country For Old Men. It's not as good, but carries a lot of the same tone and tension. It's a great movie with a great cast. Josh Brolin is it as well, Emily Blunt, Benicio del Torro and Jon Bernthal.

Why does everyone think the good guy is Llewellyn? The cop is the good guy, Anton is the bad guy, and Llewellyn is the middle guy.

Another great movie around that time period was There Will be Blood. Daniel Day Lewis and Paul Dano delivered excellent performances.

Just to make your wedding idea more concrete. I got married last month in Poland. We had a secular wedding with no church involvement. Dress code was chilled, essentially smart casual, no pressure. Venue was spectacular, but long story short, we had a breakfast station with stacked pancakes, gallons or maple syrup, and piles of crispy bacon, and guess what...it was a triumph. My biggest advice wedding wise is, don't do things just because they're tradition. The best ideas are usually the obvious ones, everyone loves pancakes.

I don't think I could take all the money, but I probably would have slipped a few hundred bills into my pocket just for the trouble. Of course there's always the irony that I would still get killed somehow, just for a few hundred dollars.

I’ve always thought it was like the absurdist literature, very much in the tradition of Camus, or even certain works of Franz Kafka.
