Maldini was more versatile as he could play LB and CB. I'd class Maldini as the best ever LB actually, but Nesta was a better CB than Maldini. Maldini was a phenomenal CB as well of course, but if we're splitting hairs then Nesta is a top 5 all time CB, Maldini maybe top 10 in that position.

This is just what I always say and always have thought. Nesta was a better CENTERBACK than Maldini was, since Maldini played mostly as a defensive Left Back, where he was the best at, but as CB Nesta was something else. Just as good as Baresi, Beckenbauer, Costacurta and Cannavaro.

This guy was a legend. Maybe Ramos has touched higher peaks, but the consistency of Nesta throughout his whole career is something special. Between Nesta, Maldini and Sergio Ramos it is very hard to pick one. I'd say Cannavaro and Baresi are slightly below, same for Thiago Silva, Piquet. Beckenbaurer is hard to fit into these comparisons, since football was a completely different game at the tame and he played in a role that today does not even exist anymore.
