When I played football I was a midfielder more often 10 but sometimes 8 or even winger but when I started to watch nesta + maldini performances something changed inside me. Defending became my thing. Now I’m older, I’m a dad and stopped playing in a team but I still have more passion for defending players than the others. For me players like nesta, maldini, desailly, hierro, campbell, thuram, cafu were my heroes they were beasts

What a pair of defenders, the best thing is that their sliding tackles are always clean and throwing the ball out and in most keeping it or even giving a pass to another teammate. If both are already legends of AC Milan, not to mention when in the italian team they formed the defensive back with Cannavaro and Costacurta, that is, a defensive wall impossible to break

I became a Milanisti in 1998 when I was 12 y/o. As a young girl who just started falling in love with the sport, I only paid attention to the strikers and midfielders. How lucky was I to then quickly learned that what made the golden era of Milan back then was the defenders. I just remember how safe it felt like knowing we had Maldini and Nesta (plus Dida) and when one of them wasn't able to play it literally felt like there was a hole. These two are legends and it was truly a privilege to witness them play in my lifetime.

We usually have goosebumps watching amazing strikers or mercurical midfielders showing their talents and what they could do with the ball. But I personally have goosebumps watching the art of defending shown by Maldini, Baresi, Nesta and Costacurta. Am lucky enough to have watched them donning AC Milan jersey in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. Outside Milan, other players deserved the mention are the likes of Cannavaro, Bergomi, Zambrotta and Ciro Ferrara.

Personally, I think Messi is the best attacking player and Maldini is the best defensive player I have seen. I do not compare them both. Both were brilliant talents to watch. But, if I were to be blessed with the talent of either one, I would chose Maldini. I don't know why. I just love Maldini I guess. Messi is beautiful though.
