Dude, you may not be losing yer mind as you may think! Most singles on the ABC/Dunhill label were "dedicated mixes"; meaning they were unique compared to LP versions. That includes Mamas And Papas, Grass Roots, Steppenwolf, and TDN. But in mid-70s, because some new ABC doofus scrapped all the singles master tapes "to save money", we only get album versions now. A company in Europe (can't remember which one) put out great-sounding CDs from internationally-sent ABC/Dunhill tapes.

I guess I know how they feel. Every time San Antonio is mentioned in a song or anywhere, we would always get excited. San Antonio has always gotten the short end of the stick compared to Dallas, Houston, and even the tiny city of Austin. If it wasn't for the San Antonio Spurs, nobody would have heard of our large city with a small town feeling.

The Hard Rock Cafe in Oklahoma has this written above the entry door: " Well, I've never been to Heaven, but I've been to Oklahoma ". It's literally the best thing in Oklahoma. If you've ever been to Oklahoma, you understand what I mean. Hoyt wrote that song to say that it doesn't matter where you're born/from. Everyone can like everyone and their music. My first Oklahoma experience was terrifying. Was paid good money over Christmas, years ago, to drive a brand-new BMW from the Atlanta Airport to the Denver Airport. Christmas Eve, rush hour, driving through Oklahoma City...in the worst blizzard I've ever seen in my life. I finally got off of I-40 west of OKC, to a motel. Still snowing HEAVILY. I broke down and cried. So glad to be alive. A blizzard that was blowing sideways. Woke up Christmas Day to about 15" of snow...but the SUN was out !

Three Dog Night never disappoints. So much creative energy and collaboration could not be sustained, and they crashed and burned much too quickly. I had them on 8-Track, and any one of their songs immediately triggers memories of sandalwood incense. Beginning with "Old Fashioned Love Song," they formed they soundtrack of the first half of my 1970s.

Written by Hoyt Axton who's mother Mae Axton wrote Heartbreak Hotel for Elvis living here in Jacksonville in the mid 50's.She was a school teacher here while writing. He inherited her talent and has many other well known hits.He was also the inventor in the movie Gremlins.By the way the Axton family was originally from Oklahoma. Maybe that is why the song refers being to Oklahoma. Elvis used to perform this at his shows. Why wouldn't he as Mae was a big part of him making it big.It was Mae who introduced Elvis to his manager Col.Parker.

The name of the group comes from Australia where men who make their living in the bush have their dogs with them. At night, depending on how cool it is they'll have one of the dogs sleep along side them. . The colder it is, the more dogs so a Three Dog Night must be chilly.

Cool story why "Shambala" never got properly mixed into stereo. Apparently one wasn't finished before the album's release date. The "stereo" version is really the mono mix in "reprocessed stereo" (one speaker tinny, other muddy, add reverb to both).

I was a huge 3DN fan as a teen. Still am. Have their entire discography... except for anything after Cyan, when they changed up the band. To me it was never three singers and a backup band, it was always 7 guys with distinct sounds that melded together perfectly. Michael Alsup is an underrated guitarist. imo. He was never a shredder at all, but always played exactly what a song needed and was never repititious. I remember when Joy To The World came out and all you heard around our jr high school was kids singing "Jerimiah was a bullfrog" Huge hit. Met Floyd Sneed and Chuck Negron in Hollywood many years later.

I love Three Dog Night, they were the very first band I saw in concert back in 1973, and the drummer threw his drum sticks intonthe audience behind him and I almost got one but a giy next to me grabbed it at the same time and took it. THey were amazing and the tickets were only 15.00 to see 3 bands play that night lol. Times sure have changed. Ty fir bringing back a great memory. Stay groovy and keep on keepin on ✌️❣️

This was written by the late great Hoyt Axton. He was born in Oklahoma and wrote a song called Oklahoma Song. My Mom had a number of his records when I was growing up. I've always loved his voice. My favorite lighthearted song by him is An Old Greyhound which is about his touring bus and a heavier themed song is In a Young Girls Mind. You'll should react to some of his singing.

I knew you guys would go crazy when they mentioned Oklahoma. As others have mentioned, Hoyt Axton who wrote the song and many others was born there. Great vocals by Cory Wells. I got to see them in April 1972 not long after this song came out and I had turned 11. It was my second concert shortly after seeing The Carpenters. Great experiences for a kid. Lots of great material to dive into from Three Dog Night. If you haven't done so yet, please listen to Liar and Celebrate.

They had a bunch of great songs. I was a young boy in the 70's, but I always remembered listening to my older sisters play TDN on their red 8-track player. They are a great rabbit hole to go down. The next selection should be Shambala. My personal favorite, even though I used to scream out "but I've been to Oklahoma" riding my bike down the street. Another great selection you two would enjoy is Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's "Fishing in the Dark". I can't get enough of that song.

Yes, Three Dog Night is a West Coast band. The band had 21 Billboard Top 40 hits between 1969 and 1975, with three hitting number one. Three Dog Night recorded many songs written by outside songwriters, and they helped to introduce mainstream audiences to writers such as Randy Newman ("Mama Told Me Not to Come"), Paul Williams ("An Old Fashioned Love Song"), and Hoyt Axton ("Joy to the World", "Never Been to Spain") & since Hoyt was the one who wrote this song, he is the one talking about Oklahoma.

Okay. 3 Dog Night. Danny Hutton, one of the singers, is from Ireland. He formed the band with Cory Wells, who has sung both your songs so far, was (RIP) from Buffalo, NY. The other singer, Chuck Negron (mustache) is from Brooklyn. They were in Southern California when they formed the band, so the fabulous musicians are from the West Coast. Diverse band, with many styles. Chuck does the love songs mostly, very beautiful voice. You've heard Cory, bluesy sound with incredible power (A Change Is Gonna Come), and Danny does the pop sounding songs (Black and White). They sung well together. Great 3-part harmony! Give us more...!

Such an amazing band. Three distinctive vocals and harmonies from God. They helped so many great songwriters of the day, like Harry Nilsson, Randy Newman, Paul Williams, Laura Nyro and Russ Ballard Hoyt Axton on this, who rose to prominence off their songs in large part. You must do more of them, starting with One written by Nilsson, Eli's Coming by Nyro, Liar by Ballard, Old Fashioned Love song by Williams, etc etc. Keep doing more you will never be disappointed.

Hoyt Axton (RIP) really knew how to not just write the music, but how to play it. While this one's a great TDN song, you need to react to "Eli's Coming", "One", and "Shambala" for some harder sounds, and "Pieces of April" and "Old Fashioned Love Song" (my senior year prom theme--yep, I'm old) as some of their more mellow tunes. These guys rocked the early 70s.

Richard, you'd probably dig Hoyt's album called "Joy To The World", where he does that, "Never Been To Spain" and "The Pusher". You might also get a kick out of the "ABC/Dunhill Singles Collection of..." series from a company in Europe. TDN and other artists on the label had mostly remixed 45s, but all the US single master tapes were scrapped "to save money" in the 70s.

My favorite memory of this song was listening to it over NYC's 77 WABC, in Fairmont, West Virginia. Fairmont's about 400 miles from NYC. I've been to Oklahoma myself. I was riding with my dad in the car when this came over the radio. This was 1978, when I was 15. Worth it, to be pushing old age now, to have been young then. Posting 2-26-23.
