No Dig Day 2023 - Share the joy| Spread the compost | Prizes for children | Charles Dowding
The first-ever No Dig Day in November 2022 was a huge success and celebration. Do join in this year, and use #nodigday on social media posts.
November is the start month of next year's gardening, the beginning of next year's growing adventures. Plus a chance to celebrate the wonderful no dig method, and to share what we have achieved this year.
Competition Time!
For this year’s No Dig Day, we are running two competitions for children. The first is for ‘Best Veg Garden of 2023’. This is open to children up to the age of 14, and the winner will receive a cash prize of £100! I shall judge this.

The second is to create some Veg Art - use vegetables to create a mouth-watering artistic masterpiece! This is open to children of any age, and the winner of each age category will receive signed copies of my Children’s No Dig Gardening Book and the No Dig Cookbook. Anna judges this one.

Please send entries to anna@charlesdowding.co.uk by the end of the day on Sunday 5th November (whatever timezone you are in!)

For both competitions, you will need to include the following info:
- Name of child
- Age of child
- Photo of entry, with a description (optional)
Plus how we can contact you, such as email address.

We look forward to seeing your entries, and good luck! 🌱

I love the initiative this channel's taking to encourage kids to dive into gardening. Cultivating an interest in vegetable growing and gardening from a young age not only fosters a deep connection with nature but also contributes to childhood development. As always, major kudos for running this contest and can't wait to see some of the submissions! ❤️❤️❤️

So fun! I love the idea of spreading knowledge of no-dig this way! I was planting garlic yesterday here in the USA and thinking about how I am not fully no dig, I still rake up some rows because we get so much rain here. But I’m a heavy mulched and I bury my food scraps directly in the garden now. It’s working well :) we have a coffee truck and use organic coffee so all the grinds (5 gal bucket a week) go directly in the garden. Yes I’m wild in the garden! Thank you for your content.

November 3rd is my birthday. Having suffered from heart failure I concentrated on gardening - my garden is 1000 M2 and so I decided starting it all over this year. Your no dig method has converted me and I am starting to see results on my piece of land. Anyway it keeps me busy and probably helps me health wise. Thank you for your videos and sorry for living in North France, but I still keep up with your site. Keep up the good spirit!

If you’ve ever commented on the size of your garden I missed it. How large is it and how many people do you think it could supply with an adequate amount of food? ( minimum survival level). It appears that your veggies would supply a nutritious diet for anyone.

Great question for Charles. For me I've experienced a bumper crop of Roma Tomatoes. I got a steam canner great for anything that uses the water bath method. I hang fresh herbs to dry then put them in used glass jars w. lid from food purchased. Crush only when I need some. Stores 2 years on shelve. They lose a lot of the medicinal value when heated to dry them. Also save seeds. Before I store them I test to see if successful.

Charles - I noticed the plastic trays with air holes that you use to dry/store vegetables in in your videos, but you never seem to have said where you got/get them from. I'd really like to buy a few this month as I'll have plenty of winter veg to store, so it would be great if you could make a recommendation on potential sources.

That's excellent, all the friendly competitions. For the First time in years, because I discovered it was water retentive, I've gone ahead & put flat cardboard boxes down in the tiny backyard garden & some decent mulch mix on top, now that you've shown me what not to do, I your numerous videos. Plus I've stuck some pots of vegetables on it as well. & have finally located a bale or two of Lucerne hay & an earthmoving company to transport some soil in ( as I don't have a compost heap as such, she mumbles because as a gardener of 40+ years, the scraps & trimmings are scattered on the footpath. 😀

@CharlesDowding1nodig I didn't see much wrong with it and although it's a pretty big and relatively new subject, I thought it was a good taster to possibly a more in depth video. For the past seven years or more, I've seen the effects of structured water in relation to my health, which are in high water content fruits and high water content veg. This would be a great addition to the growing of fruit and veg as well as water we use in and on ourselves, especially when the stuff coming out of our taps is full of chemicals and structurally dead.
