Fascinating! I’ve watched much of Charles Dowding’s content, so this is very familiar to me. Love the idea of a roll of packing cardboard, so much easier than stripping down boxes. I would love to do this to my small garden, but we are plagued by cats owned by my various neighbours. That compost would be full of cat s-t overnight!

Finally getring my allotment after years of waiting. Can't wait to get cracking. I used to have small patch in my garden at my old house, but now can get cracking. We started an allotment for my aunt a few years back the same way. But morning glory was a pain in the bum in the initial year. However with regular weeding it lost its vigour and eventually disappeared.

I tried the cardboard, but it attracts to many bugs that eat up my plants roots. Plants that have a huge root system seem to do fine, but smaller plants like my lettuce and zinnias were demolished. The rolly polly's love the cardboard and small plant.

Great video! Newbie here. Could I do this over partially weedy clay soil and be able to plant directly into the compost?
@megsophie82619 ай бұрын
You can! And in fact it’s a great way to immediately improve your growing space and soil, what I did was strimmed the weeds as short as possible and then added a good layer of the mulch…if the weeds are quite invasive you may want to try and remove some of them or there roots, just because otherwise they may pop up in your beds (I’m thinking things like cooch grass, bind weed, thistle, ground elder etc) but even if they pop up, just keep popping them out and they will weaken and disappear because of the layer of mulch, hope this helps! 🌿

Thank you 😊 Yes, absolutely, the kitchen garden had clay soil too 🌱

What size is this plot and how many bulk bags of compost and wood chippings did you use? I’ve just inherited a very similar allotment so I’m trying to figure out how much I need to order

How do you plant through the cardboard with the soil so shallow?
@Nettlesandpetals9 ай бұрын
The cardboard degrades quite quickly so by the time the roots reach it they can penetrate quite easily, but if you were to plant a larger plant straight into them, I just make a hole in the cardboard 😊
