No Doubt's early journey was marked by struggle, starting with personal tragedies, interband dynamics, and an initial record that failed commercially. Their story begins with siblings Gwen and Eric Stefani, raised in a music-loving family in Anaheim. They were influenced by ska music, leading them to form No Doubt with John Spence, who tragically took his own life in 1987. The band, shaken but determined, continued with Gwen taking on lead vocals.
Their self-financed debut album in 1992 garnered little attention despite their energetic performances. Eric's departure due to creative differences and depression further strained the band. However, they persevered, incorporating diverse influences into their music and refining their sound.
In 1995, their second album, "Tragic Kingdom," emerged after a tumultuous recording process. Hits like "Just a Girl" and "Don't Speak" propelled them to stardom, though the attention centered mainly on Gwen, causing tensions within the band. Despite internal challenges, the album's success defied industry expectations, eventually reaching diamond certification.
Their meteoric rise came with challenges as fame overshadowed band unity. Nevertheless, they embraced their success humbly, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of the music industry. By 1996, they were outselling major acts, but remained grounded, with some members planning to return to college.
Their story is one of resilience, evolving from personal tragedies and industry setbacks to becoming one of the era's biggest bands. Through perseverance and musical experimentation, No Doubt carved their path, leaving a lasting impact on the music scene of the '90s.

Hey there. I was the bass guy in Tom's old band, Rising. Yes, we rehearsed next to N.D. [Slayer rehearsed in there once or twice as well] in the shadow of Angel Stadium in Anaheim, and that flyer was up on the bulletin board for a few weeks while Tom was still in our band [which was not 'fronted' by his sister, Gina, but by her husband, Mark Machovina, if by anyone - we all took turns in the spotlight], so despite all the interviews and what he told the rest of us at the time, it's obvious he'd decided to join them before he left us. Spence loved our band; there were little windows on the rehearsal rooms and he would watch us jam all the time, hollering and doing back-flips. That dude was so cool, and it was so sad what happened with him. Anyway, the guitar guy I got in there after Tom was great, but created tensions which ultimately killed Rising, which is too bad, because we were really good. I'm still in touch with everyone else from Rising, but Tom stopped returning calls and emails from me decades ago. No clue why, but whatever.

I'd say the music teacher gave them a huge compliment because music with commercial viability is usually inferior. While I think No Doubt is a pretty good band, what came after Tragic Kingdom shown a band trying hard to mimic the "effortless" succes of TK and hurting the quality of their music in the process.

Back in 95, my high school set up a grad night for us at Disneyland. My friends and I all went and as we were walking around trying to decide what ride to go on next, we came across a live performance of these guys playing this weird music. We went over to check it out and saw this bleach blonde woman singing, jumping around on stage and climbing the scaffolding. We listened to about 2 songs and walked away saying that they sucked. Fast forward a few months later and all of of the sudden this song came on KROQ... It sounded super familiar. Turns out it was the band that we heard at Disneyland! I was totally blown away. I ended up buying their CD and absolutely fell in love with them. To this day I can't tell you why I didn't like them at first and why I switched on a dime to liking them overnight, but I can tell you that I'm still kicking myself for walking away from a No Doubt concert at Disneyland. Years later, they opened for U2 and guess what... I missed their show because my brother was late and I had his ticket... I only got to see their last song. I guess me seeing them live just isn't meant to be. 😔

You should do a video about the whole story of No Doubt! Here in Argentina the band came to be known way after their 90s success. Mainly, with their version of the song “It’s my life”. Besides that song, people remember Gwen Stefani and not the band. Particularly due to songs like “Rich Girl”, “Cool” and “Hollaback girl”. That’s why I was a little bit surprised when I saw this video, as I had no idea about how popular was this band during the 90s.

I saw them open for Fishbone way back when John Spence was the singer. They were a lot of fun. Though I was more on the punk side of ska, I always liked them. I can't stand Gwen's solo stuff, though.
