It always amuses me to see the look on folk's faces when they see how little time long hair really takes. They simply won't believe that longhairs have lovely hair because of all the time consuming things we DON"T inflict on our hair. I also like how Longhairs use/need fewer hair pins to hold our do's then those with shorter hair.
@Silverbleedy
@Silverbleedy 8 жыл бұрын
This! Also the lesser pins is true. I have very thin hair, and even then I needed three pins just to keep it up back when I had shoulder/APL length. Now I am near BSL and I am good with just one pin. It's getting easier and easier the longer it gets o_o I'm so happy I made the choice to grow my hair

Julia Lebel It is mine as well. Lol. Oh sure, I love being able to fix in all sorts of crazy ways when I want to - but mostly? I keep it long because I'm lazy and it's so easy to deal with. ;o)

torrinpaige hahaha, right there with ya sisters... when people ask me how i got my hair so long and pretty.. i give them a bland look and say "Benign neglect" The ones that get that puzzled half smile i might elaborate a little, the ones that laugh outright, i cultivate as friends ;) LOL.
@TheSleepyowlet
@TheSleepyowlet 7 жыл бұрын
Summer Nobyn - "Benign neglect" - that made me laugh, because I usually say something very similar to people who ask me - "just stay away from people with scissors for a while and treat your ends" I haven't even had a trim for a decade - my ends are healthy (most anyway which is what counts), and the thin point they taper into is easier to hide than the shaving brush that people with cut ends have going on. And a lot of the time hairdressers will straight out lie to you about the state of your hair because they want your money. Stay away from them, stay away from hair products with silicone, find a silicone free leave in for your ends (Shea butter based ones are good), and you'll be fine.

Your videos are very inspirational to me esp because my hair is down to my tail bone. I'm bedridden disabled so normally I keep my mop braided but sometimes I will do a bun or French braid. I used to get a good laugh at the women I worked with back in the days before illness when my hair was to the middle of my back and I heard oh how do you find time to care for that? It must take you hours. My busy life won't let me have long hair. It's all I can do to find time to wash, blow dry, and curl before work. OMG REALLY! I love my no fuss long hair. No blow drying except on winters coldest days maybe. I just let it air dry and it waves on its own. I won't do complicated styles so it's 5 minutes or less for styling and the compliments keep coming and I'm 45! I've tons of gray. It's funny what people will say and do sometimes. Hope I didn't ramble too much. Please forgive me if I did. I've a brain tumor. Thanks:)
@torrinpaige
@torrinpaige 10 жыл бұрын
Christine Strauss No need to ever apologize for a ramble - you do watch me, right? I am the queen of babbling. :o) I'm glad to hear that you've been able to keep your hair long. I will always contend that longer hair is easier to take care of than shorter hair. I've had both - I much prefer the long. :o)

+Nathalie Chetelat (nchete) Yay! I'm so tickled that you now have options. The whole reason I started this channel was to give folks options so they wouldn't rage cut their hair when they couldn't do anything with it. Long hair is awesome. You can either get it up super fast, like here, or take some time and really do a fabulous, crazy hairstyle if you choose. The possibilities are endless!

+torrinpaige you don't want to know how I've worn it up to now for 90% of the time.... I was doing some sort of low ponytail, but doing a loop and doing a second loop on top on it. Done in 5 seconds and the hair is out of the way for the whole day 😅. Time to change!

So nice to see you again, Torrin! Hope all is well. I can't remember the last time I did a messy bun. Personally I'd never had much trouble with the take down, but that's probably due to the slippery-ness of my hair - pins & barrettes have a tendency to slide right out. Still, it's wonderful to have a real demonstration on how little time it takes to put long hair up. My mom's been after me to cut my hair every time she sees me, convinced it takes so much work, so much time, blah, blah, blah & I just keep telling her it doesn't. I wash my hair 2x a week, don't use all that much conditioner or shampoo & am generally in & out of the shower in 5 minutes. If it's longer, it's because I love showers & am enjoying the water. :)

I used to do the half pulled through pony tail thing when I was at like....APL, but past that forget it! A cinnabun secured with a beak clip was my go to until waist when I got bored and started looking at YT vids for ideas. The whole boho soft fluffy waves with pulled apart braids everywhere looks all very nice in a photoshoot for a 17 year old but actually doing something in real life, give me up and neat any day!

Have you ever realized how when they say messy and effortless bun, they actually take extra time??? They're fussing over it, pulling out strands and all that! I think buns like the ones you did here are effortless in the true sense of the word!! I hate when they use words like "effortless or casual" I hate the word "boho" too! Hair is intrinsically meant to be worn neatly, don't you think? A lot of people spend more time to make it look messy! WHY!
@torrinpaige
@torrinpaige 10 жыл бұрын
DIVYA NAIDU Divya, we are kindred spirits. That extra messy look drives me bonkers. I like some of the soft braids - where they fluff and fatten them up - but the shredded, rough looking ones kill me. I do like a soft updo, but I think they are using terms like casual, effortless, and boho in place of messy, undone, and unkempt. There is a way to do soft and easy - but a rat's nest is not the way to do it. Lol.

DIVYA NAIDU The "messy" look bothers me so much! I don't have the longest hair, yet, and it's really curly and it takes me 2 minutes to do a neat bun because I have layers that I'm growing out. I'm finally a little past my armpit when pulled straight.
@taritangeo4948

I guess since most people have these thinned out, short to middle haircuts, there's just not enought hair to make nice neat bun since theres too little hair and layers keep trying to escape the bun so they try to spice up their tiny buns any way they can.

Love this video! I keep cutting my hair when it gets to waist length, not because it takes any longer to style, but because the weight and tangles get to me. You have given me some great ideas. It's the pulling on the scalp, how I hate that! And messy buns are the worst for that, I can't stand it after a few seconds that way.

My favorite bun by far is the disc bun! (thanks to your video :D) It's super quick, holds like a charm and never pulls my scalp (the lazy wrap and many others do that to my sensitive scalp). But honestly as long as it's not a super complicated bun, once you know how to make it any bun will take WAY less than 3min!

AbyssalKhaos True. Jen is at the very beginning of her long hair updo journey, though, and the nautilus gave her trouble, so I figured maybe we shouldn't try the disc bun yet. ;o) Hopefully, once she starts feeling comfortable with the basics - we can convince her to try more things. Lol.

I know this video was posted five years ago, but I’ve gone from completely chemo bald (as seen in picture I need to update) to now waist length hair and I have NEVER been able to create a “messy bun.” I just don’t get it. Hair sticks? I’m great with them! I can do magic with hair pins - bobby pins, big Amish U-shaped pins, giant chignon pins and all manner of hair forks - but “messy buns” made with just a hair tie or two continue to elude me. I’m so happy somebody else feels the same way about them.

There's one quick bun I love that you forgot. The Equilibrium Bun. Basically a Cinnamon Bun but you fold your hair in half first. I have very slippery hair and once it got past mid-back the cinnamon bun wasn't working that well anymore unless I used a mass of pins, which defeated the purpose of a quick bun. The equilibrium bun solved all that. Because you fold your hair in half first (so your ends are touching the base of your ponytail) there is a loop at the end and when you are done and it's easy to run a stick through that loop then under the bun and out the other side. One of the few that still works with one stick with my tailbone length hair! I'll pass along this video to my mom who is having the same problem as your friend. Great vid as always!
@torrinpaige
@torrinpaige 10 жыл бұрын
WillowMoon I've never done the equilibrium bun - but of course, my hair isn't silky or slippery at all. I know it's hard for my silky haired sisters sometimes (my hubby has silky hair, so I know how frustrating it can be to make it do things, lol). I'm glad you found a bun that works! I will keep that one in my mental Rolodex for when one of my fine haired girls asks me about a new bun that'll work for her.

Looovvee these...just subscribed and I have been obsessed with your videos all day....but I can't do like ANY of your tutorials because my hair is not quite as long and thick as yours. I am at about 3/4 the way down my back, I always do the messy bun but I find it really tangles up my hair and it starts to hurt after a while but sometimes you want it up and you don't want to take forever doing it....well I am currently rocking your version of the "sock bun" and I love it!!! I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to do it but it totally worked and looks good! I can't wait to try the other buns out! ....I promise I will say bye bye to the messy buns :)

My hair is pretty much down to my knees and most of the time it is kept up in buns held with a selection of chopsticks, I have loads of these now! If I'm doing it normally it takes about 30 seconds to put up, and if I'm Braiding it first it takes no more than 5 mins. People are always asking me if a) I do my own hair because it looks so impressively complex and b) if a chopstick or two can seriously be all that holds my hair in place. Always makes me giggle.

haha, a bar had proof the other night... i wore my hair down in deference to the cold weather, but the bar was HOT.. i asked my friendly neighborhood bartender (who happens to be a friend lol) if i could borrow a pen till the night was over, twist, twist, twirl, poke, and thirty seconds later i had a cinnamon bun rockin. At the end of the night, i pulled out the pen, shook my head, and it all came tumbling down, right back below my butt, heads turned lemme tell ya LOL. With yours down to your knees, i'll bet you would get more than a few heads turning, probably quite a few gasps to boot :). Amazing how a little hair can shock and awe people isnt it? LOL.

Amanda R I can't do the rolled style - I have too much hair and it always looks messy when I'm done - never neat. I think the rolled version works well for my girls with fine, silky hair - but if you're anywhere near thick or coarse like I am - it just flat out won't work right.

I fear that my hair is too thin to lose the hair in the front part though...and I'm a bit scared of scissors cutting my hair.*lol* You're similiar in hair colour and a like fringe you have. Do you mind to tell me what ponytail circumference you've got? It looks much thicker than mine.

Awesomebird Sama My pony circ is 5 inches. My bangs are cut thin and wispy so as not to make too much of a drastic difference to my hair thickness. Many girls who go for a fringe cut a really thick section - I don't. Mine is really just the very front bits and not much of them. I like them this way because I can leave them down if I want them down, but since they're so thin, I can pull them back into a hairstyle if I want. Options!

My hair is waist length but not long enough to do the first one successfully, do I just have a shorter body? Additionally my hair is half as thick as yours, so my cinnamon one won't fall out with just one clip.
@torrinpaige

marija Instead of using your whole hand on the initial grab like I do - use two fingers instead. My husband's is around BSLish and I can do his with two fingers, so that should get it up. I have to have a big loop since I have so much left over, but as you're more on the fine side, you won't need so much. Try two fingers instead. ;o)

i can't use clips or bobby pins b/c of workplace restrictions (i work in a dairy), so my go-to style is a nautilus bun with a hair tie to hold it. ordered hair pins b/c those aren't explicitly restricted in the employee handbook, and i need to get rid of the stupid hair tie.

hi there, on comments on another video your channel was recommended. my hair is to my hips, just slightly past it (the tips). its thick and because I have neck problems, this compounds it, but it really weighs on me. apparently your channel has hairstyles that help with this? I find I have to braid it and kind of set it on my shoulder so the weight is not on my neck. I can't put it up in a bun without it really really hurting my head!! :( its too heavy
@torrinpaige
@torrinpaige 3 жыл бұрын
Hiya! Hmmm. Divide and conquer! I honestly am not sure what to do in regards to your neck pain, but if you would like to try getting your hair up, I find dividing it into two sections and going from there helps disperse the weight. Examples here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYvZiaV7hMt9atk Also? Look for The Madora, Pretty Shepherd's Farmgirl Style, and Practical Hair Taping. All of those are extremely comfortable styles because they disperse the weight of your hair around your whole head instead of concentrating it into one spot. Good luck!

I can't for the life of me figure out the nautilus. It feels very similar to a lazy wrap bun though when doing it, but they don't look the same at all. Oh well, practice I guess. Any update on your friend? She master the long hair lifestyle?

The closest thing I can do for an intentionally messy bun is a nautilus. However, I did once see a lost video of Stevie Nicks in the 70's flip her head over, loosely braid her hair and put it in a bun and that was a beautiful look.

peepslostsheep I know it has - but do not fear. We are going to get back in the full swing of things with a regular schedule once more very soon. I have a few RL things that have been going on in this past year and my channel has suffered for it. The cinnabun hate me...HATE me, I can never get one to stay, I have used pins, sticks and works, it is not staying unless I nail it down with about 12 pins. I will try and see if little clasps can do the trick though so thank you for that idea. :)

Venefica82 If you add them while you're winding it, then wind more hair around the clips, then clip down the outside, it should stay. 8- 10 clips should do it.

Just a suggestion from me regarding the nautilus bun, I found it easier to braid mine (no ponytail, just braid it) and then put it up in the nautilus. It would stay up when I did that when I couldn't get it to stay up without. Now, my go to style when I don't know what to do with my hair is a nautilus. I don't think I could do a messy bun if I wanted to. BTW, I am inching my way closer to knee length. It hits my thigh right now. :-)

Tracey Walton I've got a tutorial on the braided nautilus. I thought it would help out my fine haired gals when a regular nautilus was slipping for them. Braided things always seem to have a better time of not slipping. And you're almost at knee?!? Awesome!

Yay! I hate it how most hair channels go "just do your favourite messy bun for this part" and I'm sitting there thinking there's no way I can get my fine, hip length (PS. Yay again) hair into a messy bun. Also, have you got any tips for buns for wet hair? Nautilus always gets too tight and I'm sick of the cinnabun ☺ x
@torrinpaige
@torrinpaige 10 жыл бұрын
citizenshoegazer I rarely bun wet hair - as mine NEVER dries if it's bunned. JJJ's pretzel bun maybe? Or the Celtic knot? It would give you a little variety. Oh wait! I do spidermom's bun that stays if I want it out of the way and plan on blowing it dry later.

This is an old video I know. I have waist length very fine thin hair. My reasoning for a messy bun is that with the other type of buns my bun looks tiny and weird on my head. Messy buns do work and are quick if you know your hair type and know how to deal with length. There are many variations of it. I don't spend much more than a couple of minutes doing a messy bun in the morning. But I also don't fiddle with it, it's supposed to be messy not perfect.
