Thanks for joining me today as we slowly get rid of the grass in our yard and add more Texas #nativeplants, colorful, long blooming beautiful perennials and flowering shrubs to our #Texasgarden Zone 8b landscape! We are extending the design in front of our Costco Yardistry Greenhouse! The rain has delayed everything and my editing has been slow! Today, we will be planting a Stunner Weigela, Super Ka Pow Coral Phlox, Tickseed Coreopsis, Cat's Pajamas Nepeta, Creeping Germander, Wineberry Candy Daylily, and Blue Grama native grass. Lots of texture, contrast and color to last us all summer!
I hope you enjoy...Thank you for joining me in my garden today ~ Dawn #shadedfromreality

@6:28 I too have lost plants from the heavy rains we’ve had this year. My problem was how many days in a row it rained and the amount of rain. But we’ve had several sunny days now so my plants are much happier but now it’s HOT!!!! Several days over 90 degrees.

Hi Dawn, I absolutely love Cat’s Pajamas! I have been wanting them for so long and was thrilled to find them at Covington’s early spring! They are more upright and compact than Walker’s Low. I also have Walker’s Low, and it is more sprawling. It has sadly been an underperformer for me. I’m curious about Cat’s Meow. The plant that really blew me away was Mystic Spires which I was new to this season. I saw that you planted it earlier this spring, too. It has bloomed all season long since March when I planted it. It makes such a statement in mass! I plant everything above grade now because I’m tired or root rot as well. I can’t find expanded shale by itself so I use soil conditioner, compost and Bio Tone. I found out that compost might hold too much, water, which is not what I want. So I’m not sure about compost now. I bought Pink Chiffon Rose of Sharon trees and they bloom their heads off! I love them so much. But o also ordered Peppermint Smoothie hibiscus, and I think they were mislabeled because they look exactly like like the Pink Chiffon. I have all of these by my pool, so I wanted some variety. Such a bummer when that happens. But both are beautiful. That weigela is stunning. I really need more purple foliage. I had no idea that we can grow them here. I love the groundcover. I will need that! Check out variegated jazz hands lorapetulum. They have a pink variegated foliage and pink fringe flowers.

I'm so glad to hear that...I guess I made a good choice! I've never been to Covington's. Is it worth the visit? I'm trying to expand my nursery visits! I'm curious about Cat's Meow too and hope to try that in the future! I use a soil conditioner and yes, that is right about compost. I always mix it with a woody mulch (landscaper's mix) and pea gravel to help with drainage. Maybe you could get your hands on those 2 things if you can't get the expanded shale! I will have to check out the plant varieties you mentioned. They all sound gorgeous! Thank you for the recommendations! Enjoy your day ~ Dawn

@@shadedfromrealityHi Dawn! I think Covington’s is a little less expensive than Calloway’s. I’m not sure that I’d drive an hour out of your way to go to it, but it would help fun if you did a nursery tour, lol. It is huge! You can get one of the staff to take you in the golf cart. I’d say early spring they have more variety. During summer, their inventory seems to fizzle out (smaller perennials and annuals). I need to check out Green Acres, too! I heard there was also a good nursery in Denton.

I love the plants all around your pool how close do you plant trees. I am worried about roots damaging my pool or the plumbing pipes that connect to the filter
@shadedfromreality
@shadedfromreality 3 ай бұрын
Thank you Elizabeth! Yes, that is always a concern! Our oak was already in the ground when they built the pool, so the pool company thought it was a good distance. It is about 15 feet away and the holly trees are about 8 feet from the pool pipes. If that ever does happen, we will be putting the house up for sale...lol!!!

Where do you get the expanded shale? And does it make soil more alkaline?
@shadedfromreality
@shadedfromreality 3 ай бұрын
Hi Kerry, We usually get ours at Green Acres or our local nursery. The big box stores don't carry it. No, it is not supposed to change the PH of your soil. If you can't find it, pea gravel is the next best option!
