I neglected my maintenance on my 5g tank thats heavily planted. Ended up turning off the filter because the water lvl dropped too low. It sat like that for almost 2 months! Finally got did some maintenance and its looking better than ever. Long story short. Heavily planted tanks maintain themselves and dont need weekly maintenance

Bettas jump because in the wild the water dries up and the puddles become toxic so if they are jumping or gulping air it's because they don't like something in the water. And yes some might be just for fun Bettas definitely have personality. I dislike that every parent gets one for they kids thinking they are beginner fish. They are far from beginner fish in my opinion.

Please feel free to check out welcome to the wild. And to be honest I actually never do water changes like 100% I pretty much just take out maybe 20 30% and that's about it. Basically I do that with all my tanks because my landlord says I can't have filters and lights so I use my light in my room so my plants have light and the window. I only use liquid fertilizer and that's pretty much it. The Roots grow for the plants and they wind up sort of feeding off the almond leaves that have decayed but my tank slip clean. I might gravel back occasionally but not very often. And you probably wondering how's the pH perfect. I found a way to neutralize volcanic water in Taiwan it's pretty easy

5:04. Dude that is a serious fire hazard. The wires on the wall switch are definitely exposed, the water could spray dropplets of water that could end up in there.

Are water changes affected by evaporation? My house is very warm (wood stove) and I get a lot of water evaporation, so I end up just adding more (filtered) water rather than changing it out. Is this bad?

As long as you are adding declhorinated water and not doing heavy water changes you should be good.

Mr Pinky has been in a non filtered, room temp 7 g column tank with plants and smooth rocks for 2 1/2 years. He has a few ramshorn snails as room mates. He looks awesome in there as do the plants. Best low maintenance tank ever and everybody who's ever seen him and the tank absolutely loves it. It is my favorite tank so far. 👍❤👍

Looking to create a no-filter hybrid blackwater/biotope community tank (some stem plants, plenty of surface plants) and want to get a betta as the star attraction. My concern is that I need to heat the tank, but how to ensure sufficient flow to move the warmed water around sufficiently without a filter doing this for me? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! X

Good Day, Im looking at setting up 3 tanks similar to this, 20G, 50G & 75G. I plan on using Dr Novaks plenum method with dirt & an eco complete cap. What is your take on the plenum, the science according to Dr NOVAK sounds good but Im not a science person. Do you have any experience with plenums and what is your take on them. I already have the UG filters but I would appreciate your opinion as you may have different science for or against. Hope to hear from you. Thanx Peter

Oh thank upi, My betta tank looks almost exactly like the one you showed. I know the algae is no problem but sometimes it feels like it's getting out of control! My fish seems insanely happy though, he's so active and responsive to me looking at him and even speaking to him! I do like 10% water changes every other day. I'm moving him to a bigger tank soon and I was debating putting a filter in the new one for him, but after seeing this I feel better about my filterless tank!

low/medium light, no filter, low fish population = no algaes. the best of the best is to add copepods, ostracods and blackworms to your tank at night. your betta will love it and he will not eat them all if there is a lot of plants.

Great video but I have one problem. I have shrimp with my Betta (Kayn) and although they get along fine, when it comes to feeding time Kayn is very greedy and eats everything including the shrimp food. Because of this I rely on the algae as food from my shrimp (and my snail, Singed, helps keeps the algae to a minimum). Will adding floating plants still allow some algae to grow? I don't get much as it is but it's enough to sustain the shrimp and Singed. Or perhaps is there a better feeding alternative that doesn't require me taking Kayn out of the tank (he hates the net and it's hard to get him as he hides in the rocks as soon as he sees it lol)

If your tank is well cycled, you won't need to feed your shrimp unless it's overstocked. They will feed on surface bacteria or algae. I also leave dead plant leaves in there for them to nibble on!

Ever do a tank with actual mud for substrate?
@maritthany2 жыл бұрын
My tank is a mix of organic potting soil, worm castings, gravel and black sand ? Plants are doing good, fish are doing good (I actually haven’t lost a single fish since I set it up aside from when my bigger fish started thinking tetras were snacks) and my only real issue is that my filter sucks in the mud and I have to clean the whole thing out every once in a while.

If you have snails it just means you don't have to worry as much about algae and dead plant matter. I got a bunch ramshorn and bladder snails hitchhiking in my pants. But you could always do a bleach dip on the plants to prevent snails before putting them in the tank.
