In 1991, on behalf of World in Action, Adam set out to live homeless on the streets of London. With no bank accounts or credit cards, his worldly possessions consisted of the clothes that he was standing in, £30 cash, and a bag with a concealed camera and microphone.
No Fixed Abode tells the story of his struggle to find food to eat and a roof to sleep under. On his journey, he shows us the harsh reality of homelessness in London. This episode depicts the beginning of Adam's experience, and provides a shocking insight into the benefits system of the time and the treatment of the homeless by the public.

It’s okay for this guy, he knows that he only has to endure it for a week, and then he knows he’ll back at home eating good food and everything else that goes with a home, so does he really care? I doubt it for one minute.

We tried to help homeless people on several occasions and each one went back to the streets as if it were there comfort zone. I was left with the impression that many of them are actually mentally ill.

Many are.The Tories introduced care in the community in the 80's causing families to care for mentally ill relatives..while selling off psychiatric hospitals to developers.

Way before this Nationwide in 1981 made a series called Down & Out where one of its reporters Tony Wilkinson, using the alias Tony Crabbe lived as a down & out for a month. It was really well done I thought & it had a profound affect on me, which I've never forgotten. The conditions he lived in were awful almost Dickensian. It was repeated in 1982 but Ive never seen any footage of it since. I still have copy of the book that accompanied it, which is well worth reading. I wonder if anyone has any footage of it? I've not seen any anywhere sadly.

OMG! The good old B1! I've been through all of this, I'm so thankful I've had a really good job for the past 8 yrs with a really good company and now working from home (due to COVID). I understand the wonderful Universal Credit is really bad, which promised so much but delivers so little.

Why should the state support anyone long term? It was designed as a safety net to prevent people becoming homeless after losing their job. Not a life style choice for the feckless.

I doubt it very much Ruth, do you really believe that our government, no matter party it is, actually care about the youngsters living on our streets in the capital, when I was living in London with my sister, we used to travel to the west end of London nearly every day, and I remember seeing the young kids in Piccadilly Circus tube station just standing around, waiting for men to pick them up so they could sell their bodies just to get something to eat and go to the penny arcade in old Compton street believe it or not, it gave me mixed feelings of pity and disgust to be honest with you Ruth, but like I said our governments really don’t give a dam in my opinion.

This guys getting pushed from pillar to post through the benefits system, it’s a good job that when his week of staying on the streets is over, he’s got a home to go to, unbelievable.

Lots of people on here criticising this chap who went onto become a Tory MP & did nothing. When will people take personal responsibility for their life choices? If you know what you want & ask for help you will be put in touch with someone who can help advise you. Sitting around & expecting a regular hand out is never going to work long term.

Did you see how many mentally ill people were featured in this. Care in the community lmao. You haven't got a scooby have you? You think everyone featured in this made a life choice to be there? Folk like yourself who most likely have never faced sudden and life changing adversity and likely have always had family and friends to help them out just do not get how some people end up in this situation. Even if you have and coped with it, not everyone has that resilience. Your lack of compassion and understanding is nauseating 🤢🤮
