To take a break from guitar making I decided to spend the day making a stock removal knife from an old pry bar I had lying around. I just moved into a new shop space and haven't set up a forge yet so I had to get a bit creative but she turned out pretty well!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*MATERIALS USED*
Red mahogany aniline dye: amzn.to/2GlfOKq
Dewalt pry bar: amzn.to/2Glhxzo
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
*TOOLS USED*
4 ½ inch cut off wheels: amzn.to/2t5QC32
3 x 21 Sanding Belts: amzn.to/2Btn3wJ
Bosch Angle Grinder: amzn.to/2t3sOwF
40 grit sanding wheel for 4 ½ inch angle grinder: amzn.to/2GnWCf8

hey man. great job! just a friendly tip from a fellow knifemaker. that spanish notch you put in the blade has no effect unless the plunge lines are within that notch. the sharpened portion of the blade should continue all the way to that notch. the whole point of it is to make the blade easier to sharpen, you spanish notch currently has no functional use other than looking cool. other than that and the one handed angle grinder thing, you did a great job! also the "burn yourself at least 40 times" thing resonates with me on a spiritual level.

Excellent work, and excellent EDC knife! I see someone already mentioned the choil, and that's good. I also observed that you did a fantastic job on the initial bevel - you got it dead on, and nice and crisp. It kinda got obliterated to a degree, in the subsequent sanding and polishing. All in all, I'd buy one! I hope you have children, and teach them well.

@@80gritschmidt51 : Everyone does a little hoarding, at least you turn your junk into works of art. As long as your junk doesn't take up a lot of space, it's not problem. Question, if I heat up a peace of steel until its glowing red, and stick it in vegetable oil, can I expect it to get a little heat treated, get brittle, ruin the steel, what should I expect? I'm not getting into the knife making business, but if I were to make my self a knife two, my goal would be to just harden it enough to keep an edge for a while.

Really like the design of that knife. I always liked a drop point hunter. They're great for gutting and skinning. I designed a leather sheath sort of like the old mountain man, Indian style, except it has a leather keeper that pops down behind the knife guard. The knife rides on my left side, handle forward. It rides high and out of the way, doesn't flop against your leg. Wish I could show it to you. It would be perfect for that knife. Keep up the good work.

@80gritschmidt51 5 жыл бұрын
Interesting, sounds like a really cool design! I tend to make my sheaths in a similar "handle forward style" (I'll make a video on that at some point as well) and I really like the utility of having the knife right on the belt. Thank you for the kind words and thank you so much for watching! I hope you have a great day.

When using antler you can put it in a crockpot for 6 hours on high and then you can actually bend to straighten the antler. If you are doing a hidden tang or rat tail tang you can easily insert the tang in antler while it's still hot and soaked. Once the antler dries and cools the tang will be locked in and all it will need is a pin to make sure its secure

Hey 80 grit, are you familiar with a supplier called Jovan. It used to supply about everything needed for knife making including different grits for belt Sanders. They used to supply a brillo belt. Same stuff as the brillo pad you use to wash dishes. I used them for taking scratches and imperfections out of the knife before the final polishing on a polishing wheel. They work great. You might already know shout them but if you didn't I thought I'd clue you in. I'm going to try making a knife out of a wrecking bar. Think I'll even steal your pattern.

Nice knife but how did you know the temperature in a log burner? To reduce brittleness it usually takes around 2hrs at 350c to get a blade right and prevent it from shattering, it's not a case of just heating it up and dipping it, did you have temp reading?

Great video. I'm happy for you, bro. I thought because you had no forge that there was a chance that I would be able to make a knife but I see that you still need other stuff that I don't have at the moment. But all the best to you.

Thank you! You can in theory make a knife with only a file and a whole lot of patience. However, I would really recommend an angle grinder at the very least because it would save you days of work and they're relatively cheap. I put links to all of the tools that I use in the description if you're curious. Regardless, best of luck in your knifemaking journey!

Thanks to your video, I have my knife cut out and ready to heat treat (had an extra pry bar). I definitely see what you mean by trying to drill holes without heating to soften the steel first. Did your wood stove not heat the knife to non magnetic? because I saw you used the torch to do the quench, I was all set to heat my knife in my outdoor fire pit but I couldn't quite get a piece of test metal hot enough and it was -20 degrees Celsius outside, so I aborted the mission. The steel was glowing cherry red but was still magnetic. I tried using a leaf blower to get extra heat, not a smart idea, hot sparks everywhere. Your knife turned out a beauty, and I can't get the background music out of my head now. Cheers!!!

Hahahha we've all been there with the leaf blower in an outdoor fire at some point! I ended up using the MAP gas torch because my woodstove didn't quite get the knife hot enough and my family got sick of me needing with it! Hahah. I look forward to hearing how your knife turns out! Take care and thanks for watching!

get a heat gun and a piece of black 1 1/2 pipe about 2 foot long and use metal tape for duct work to tape the pipe to the heat gun use this as a homemade bellows to get some more air in your fire and itll heat that blade up so hot itll melt if you dont watch it lol. works for me also use real hardwood charcoal not brickets.

One thing I've learned over the years. Is work smarter not harder. I noticed that 1. You weren't wearing gloves. Protect your hands whenever possible. 2. When you are hammering metal on your anvil. Use vicegrips or tongs to hold your metal, while hammering. This will help you to better secure your work piece. So you don't injure your hands. Bruises and pinch injuries take a long time to heal. Take better care of yourself, so you can live to be a ripe old age. Take care, & good luck with your future projects. GF1 😖😖😖😖😖😖👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😎

FALSE!!!!!! NEVER EVER WEAR GLOVES NEAR ANY SPINNING MACHINERY this includes drill presses, belt sanders and angle grinders. a cut on the finger is much easier to heal than a completely broken hand from your glove getting caught in a spinning gear.

yeah it is useful when sharpening the blade because it lets you know where to stop the sharpening. great job with the knife dude, and its cool that you didn't need to use all the tools most of us blade smiths use. makes it look simpler and easier to start for a beginner. for a forge a good basic one i started with was a large paint can with refractory lining and a large torch for the heat source (like the 2- 3 foot flame kind that is pretty easy to find on amazon.) also to kick up the heat you can use a hair dryer behind the torch and it really helps the forge get to temp quickly. @@80gritschmidt51

The knife came out beautiful. I've watched several knife making videos and yours has the best shape and size to it imo. It looks like it fits very well in your hand. @80gritschmidt51

Thanks Edward! And no, unfortunately I dont have any templates for you. My best advice on designing a knife would be to make up some mockups out of plywood and tweak them until they're perfect for your hand. Doesn't get much more custom built than that. Good luck!
