Family Man. Keep up the good work, Funk. Philly dude here, and a Hall and Oates guy, that one blew my mind. Just to let you know how much I appreciate- I've really updated my music playlists based on your videos and reviews. Continue to spread gems and I and others will continue to watch. Bringing back good memories! Video Killed The Radio Star! Hahaha- another great one

John Kongos 7" was huge in the clubs in New Orleans in 1971-72, & continued later into that decade in the discos in the Crescent City - I played it one night along with such songs as Smarty Pants & Think (About It) - in 1990 I was amazed the Happy Mondays were even aware of such a song - still a stomper, as are all bedrock classics from the late 60s, early 70s - thanks for the memories. +Quincy Gaines Thanks a lot Quincy. If it wasn't for fanatics like you, I'd have no motivation to keep it going. I still have about 50 more NFWay songs. Pretty soon we will get to PUNK, R&B, ROCK, SOUL & POP* (*standards not teenager music:)

Love your videos Funk. Just followed your Sample Junkie playlist on Spotify. Would be cool if you put out a no freakin way playlist too. Keep up the good work my man.
@DJFunktual-SampleJunkie8 жыл бұрын
+tedmistythomas Great idea but unfortunately these originals are not really on Spotify. BTW there is also a Playlist called Hip-Hop Sample Junkie where it is sequenced back and forth between the OG and the Hip-Hop song that sampled it.

DJ Funktual Sadly, I'm old enough to remember both the John Kongos original *and* the Happy Mondays remake.

+Amanda Duling I'm saying. Seems like a far more sinister song now. Daryl Hall wrote almost ALL of his own songs. How did this happen? A hit is a hit I guess. I was so blown away by that one that I had to get both H+O & MO 45's from the UK. This is the most obvious case where the original sounds better too.

+DJ Funktual A handyman was playing it as he worked at Daryl's house. Daryl heard it, loved it and chose to cover it. So the story goes. What's your fav. 80's Hall & Oates jam, Funktual? That "Out Of Touch" dub mix is pretty nuts!
@DJFunktual-SampleJunkie8 жыл бұрын
+JavaJoelRadio Sara Smile, No Can Do and Shes Gone are the ones that matter most I think but my favorites as a kid were Private Eyes (clap clap) and Adult Education.

+DJ Funktual Check out that 1984 12" dub of "Out Of Touch". Crazy shit. Arthur Baker and the Latin Rascals did it. Big WBLS/Hot 97/Kiss 98.7 track. Very ahead of its time. Breakers used to get w/ that shit. Daryl was a big hip-hop head early on and wanted to work w/ Baker. He was "mix consultant" on the "Big Bam Boom" rekkid. And yeah- "I Can't Go For That (No Can Do)" was their masterpiece. An edit of the club mix was used for the 45. It's the version most top 40 stations played back in the day (late '81/early '82), but you never hear it on the air anymore. Instead they play the crappy 3:45 edit of the album version, which takes out all of Daryl's cool ad-libs at the end. Good stuff man. Love your vids.

Every time someone points out that "Video Kill" by Buggles was the first video shown on (then) MTV, I always mention that "You Better Run" by Pat Benatar was the second. There you go. Rob Stewart was the 3rd.
@DJFunktual-SampleJunkie8 жыл бұрын
+Bernie Perez We actually touched on that in NFW w/ Deep Crates (7or8) bc it was PB's cover of You Better Run. believe me I almost used that as a transition into Heartbreaker but was afraid I go on an MTV tangent.
@cycobern8 жыл бұрын
I tend to bother my music nerd buddies about that. Always. I pressure them to explore more deep into music details so we can discuss more.
