That was incredibly instructive. I am learning a lot about the use of the oscilloscope. What could have caused that broken ground in the voltage divider resistors? Also, in the discord you guys already pointed me to broken traces but I could only test for continuity in the main chips and could not find anything. Very interesting. That GG has a great sentimental value to me. Thank you a million times. I am happy to see that the old GG helped in a sense: we now know more about the data pins and how they can be mixed. That "hairline" bridge I missed when I reflowed. My bad. Sorry!

Hi, I just wanted to let you know that my Game Gear had the EXACT same audio issue where the ground was missing from the left hand side of R49. I bridged it to the LHS of C15, and my sound is back! Thanks once again. This and your other video about Game Gear audio troubleshooting were both extremely useful.

Anyone know why a game gear turns on then immediately off before and after recap. I was able to get it to run for a while and the game would crash and it would restart then after 5 minutes the game ran properly. Next day same issue system won't stay on. I checked all solder joints and no visible issues. Power board has correct voltages and sound board gave sound when system was working.

I have one I am working on right now thats got a good audio board thats been tested but still no audio. I accidentally shorted the right audio channel and test/ground when re flowing ic3 which gave me beautiful loud audio.. but when I put headphones in somehow I only get left channel. I did hear some audio coming through the right ear but it was very quiet. If anyone has any idea where else on the board I should be looking I would appreciate it! I cant see any obvious bad traces and re flowed most the connections over there. The strange part is that before I did the re cap. I had some super quiet audio.. after everything but audio is working. I know its not the caps because i can make it work bridging that connection.. but its only the one channel.

I just bought a GG on eBay. Initially it powered on, NO SOUND, and I could see a faint image of the game playing at a VERY particular angle. But it did play. After recapping the power, sound, and main board, I now get audio, but only a white splash screen. Adjusting the brightness know has no effect, and I can no longer seem the game play at any angle, I can only hear sound, which sounds great. I double checked my work, and have very good soldering skills. Is my screen just done for? The contacts on the game cart, as well as the Colson card slot look fantastic. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Brilliant video thanks 👍🏻 could you please put some links for an oscilloscope that has enough features for this work.
I have some VA1 1-ASIC Game gear which red light boots fine, but does not read any game. All address and data lines appears to be physically fine (tested with multimeter), but the signals looks not the same. My cheap china oscilloscope might be to bad for it, but at least I could confirm the RESET and 16.7ms VSYNC signal. Does this prove no faulty ASIC? The board looks immaculate and I did not find any short to ground so far. Any idea where else I could search?
@RetroSix11 ай бұрын
You would need to check address and data to work RAM too as well as cart and ASIC and test with a game with the top lid off so you can prove the cartridge is ok too

@@RetroSix Thanks for fast reply! Cartridge is ok, works fine on another Game Gear. I have signals on all pins, but they show different, as my oscilloscope ist not very good. Is there any way to check ASIC/RAM without oscilloscope? Might not be worth 200€ for one repair...

On my Game Gear the sound works using headphones but not the built in speaker. Is this a capacitor issue or speaker?
@RetroSix3 жыл бұрын
Issue is on the sound board. Could be capacitors, broken trace, bad amplifier, bad speaker, bad headphone connector ground pin
