Brother after 7 Months of Bjj with great coaches I try Judo and fell in love with it. I mean the fights the training Randori and stuff are just so beautiful. I’m lucky to say that my coach is a old German World champion in Judo&Sambo it’s not on of those fancy dojo stuff things where they give you belt for money, hard work and glad for me much newaza so I don’t really miss Bjj. But I think Judo need an update, more like real fighting situations more No Gi work and more grappling. And I wish so bad that judoka will be free to make Leg takedowns.. Higashi maybe it’s time to create an new Judo era with all the good stuff before these Olympic rules and new systems like no Gi ? I think you’re great master and you have enough followers for that.. go for it brother

If you have to have that, Freestyle Judo fights with the mid 90s rule set, but even that was still IJF/Olympic rules. It sounds like what you want is complete Judo (competitive Judo is lots of fun but only scratches the surface) and what I mean by that is the full study of the art which has always had to be dialed back for competition, talk to your instructor/s and find out how far down the rabbit hole he/they are willing or able to take you, if he/they are genuine old school they will either know what you want to learn or know who to network with to teach you.

Never done judo but I wrestled for a long time and some things to help that throw by (elbow drag) you need to snap the head down a couple of times to put them off balance then hit the throw by. Remember you both have the same collar tie so your opponent can hit the same moves so a setup really makes a difference

I teach tang soo do and started judo a little over a year ago. Judo would complement TKD really well because if they get past your kicks you have another line of defense. The two also overlap very little, so they don't interfere with each other.

We do old school tkdplus hapkido and judo, makes for comprehensive martial arts - our first grand master instructor came to USA in the late 60’s , was master level in tkd, judo, and hapkido, it’s been a great experience trying to absorb all that ability. Moo Sul Kwan. A lot of people have this misconception that tkd is just kicks, maybe it’s because we always had hapkido and judo , but our tkd has elbows, knees, yea lots of kicks… but from the hapkido there is special low kicks and strikes special for self defense can’t use in sparring and from hapkido and judo,we have all the throws, joint manipulations, chokes, sweeps, ground work, and we do Randori. Personally I think jujitsu is worthless in comparison to judo, with karate or old school tkd for self defense. Unless caught off guard, I would never grapple in self defense as self defense to me means readiness for multiple opponents, with judo you are learning to handle the close up attack standing up, stay on your feet as much as possible, break grip and throw , choke, arm bar, - with hapkido same but also attacking joints and strike or throw, - tkd you keep ‘‘em back qnd hit hard if they penetrate you move and if they get a grip you can handle that from the judo/ hapkido. A lot of kids these days get caught up in the jujitsu fad, like it’s something special to go to the ground, in my opinion that’s the worst thing to do and the schools I’ve heard of do long term contracts and it’s more of a business instead of martial arts. Anyway, yes find an instructor with well rounded skills but don’t discount your tkd experience, for self defense there is nothing better than a good side kick, I’ve used mine more than once in multiple opponent situation, even been attacked by a small gang in the dojang after class! Usually you have a big mouth in front of you talking trash and another tries to come up behind with a punch, SIDE KICK !!!

Thank you Shintaro, I am interested in the application of judo techniques without holding on to clothing, it is good to be able to adapt the techniques to different situations and to make them versatile, for example as a self-defense for someone who is not wearing a shirt or jacket, because If I've never practiced no gi judo, I wouldn't know many ways to grab someone with no clothing on their torso. Is judo no gi useful so that judo is not limited to people who only wear clothes
