Welcome back Luka. From age 7 until now, I have never washed a car body. Never had a problem. And I am 68 now.

Me 2. 68. Not a car wash attendant. But then the other day my 40 Willys pickup I painted with Rustoleum 2x gloss white over same brand primer. Came out like acoustical ceiling. So it went into the purple pond of Super Clean. Then scrubbed and rinsed then sanded. Yeah, I clean off sanding dust or mud. I reprised with Tamiya and Tamiya gloss white. Came out pretty fair. But do I normally precast? Nah.

Sometimes I’ll rinse a body to get sanding dust off, but that’s it. I don’t wash parts. And I also use rattle can automotive primer for almost everything.

Same on the sanding and rinsing. Never washed a body. I use rattle can tamiya primer.

I use the Tamiya brand primers. I've had good luck with these, and using the Tamiya brand spray lacquers.

I work in a injection mold factory. We do use a silicone mold release but usually only on start ups from change over to make it easier to clean incase the mold gets "flooded" on start up. Bad process techs will spray the heck out off it if they can't get the parts to release correctly. So it's far and few between but be careful.

The only thing I do that's different from your approach is I wipe the body down with rubbing alcohol. Great video, Matt!! I'm glad to see you're feeling better and at the bench!!

Glad your feeling better kinda missed your videos. I've been modeling since 1966 (12 YO) and I "Never" washed my models, I did do a little prep work like scuffing and priming before final painting on larger parts (body chassis etc). I learned about painting from my Grandfather who had a body shop, who was my initial inspiration in eventually becoming a Auto Mechanic. Every Model I paint is like a tribute to him in my mind. Modeling has been such a joy and it's so much "Fun" Which is why we all do it!

You are right, I have never washed my parts , I also wet sand and prime a few times so really no difference.

I rarely wash any parts unless I've had to strip paint. I just sand with 1200 grit paper and wipe it down with a little alcohol. It's worked for me for over 40 years. I also prime everything prior to painting.

Welcome back Luka!!!! Love your GTO project! About cleaning bodies, firstly, I do wash them but everything else, I don't! I'm like you with the chrome, i never strip chrome and even on most bumpers depending on the car I'm building. I scrape some parting lines on the chrome components, prime and paint over the item(s) Good to see you again!!! Get well!!

I dont ever really clean anything. I usually do primer gets the paint to stick better. I dont really care do much about the turn out on the body. I like all the building and the figuring out things to get the look I want. I did comment on your Facebook post. That thing is gonna be awsome!!!

Good that you told this from the angle of how you do it and why. There are videos that tells how people should do something and that bugs me. I don't prewash the body, because they always require some sanding, and sometimes filling. Putty leaves some nasty dust. So washing sanding dust is highly recommended, or that's how I do it.

As for me I always wash all my parts in warm soapy H2O . Evan Tamiya washes all their parts prior to packaging ! You can feel how squeaky clean the plastic is and just elminates a possible paint problem down the road ! I guess it just comes down to a personal preferance. Cool watching your channel as always !

Being sick can be a real downer. Nice that you're feeling better again. Doing it the right way, is whatever works for you. The only wrong way to do something, Is if it doesn't work the way you want. I lowered the front end of a '57 Fairlane, simply by swapping the pins, right to left side. This one was built in 1978. Still looks good. The slicks on the rear, are from the early '60s AMT kits. The old school 700x15s.and it wears old Full moon hubcaps.

Deffo Supertricks as apposed to Centerline Auto Drags, Cennas have more studs and a concave dish on the rears while ST's are convex and I think the slicks and the way it sits is accurate to many of the day, If you've ever read a drag racing magazine from the time you'dve seen all kinds of builds and sizes, basically many built what they could so yea killa build

If you're sanding the body you get any mold release off the car. Washing is for folks who paint the body pretty much straight out of the box.

Has anyone mentioned that every kit manufacturer says to wash the stuff first. Sanding first can force the mold release into the styrene, sanding it doesn't necessarily remove it.

The proper way to prep a model is this. Soak in super clean for 6 hours, then wash in dawn making sure you lose at least one small part down the drain. After that, while your getting ready for paint, eat some some chicken wings and Cheetos. 😂 but seriously, I’m glad you feeling better and getting some good bench time. Keep up the good work!

I've been washing my kits for quite a few years. The other thing that ive started doing the last 5 years or so is priming the body parts. Thanks for the priming info. It's nice wacthing you guy's for different idea's. 👍👀 i actually have question. Do you know of a company that sells "vinyl tires" and rims ? There was a company called " American Satco " that sold vinyl tires, but they dont come up anymore. Unless they change there name ??? Thanks

I wash every kit I open up! And bang off loose droplets of water, allowing to air dry. And I let bagged tires gas off out of sealed bags. Every step counts for a great finish on your models. Especially bodies! Why chance it?

Wait you do not wash your models ..... Well I beg to differ as soon as you sand with said soft pad and wet sand.. ding ding your are washing since your not going to leave the sanding residue on the model... You may not go over and put it in dawn in the beginning... But you are acheiving the same thing when you wet sand... And I bet you give it a final wipe just before paint... There's more than one way to skin a model to each their own... Me its soft scrub and then sand... Then soft scrub to get and over all finish... the soft scrub leaves a better than 1k grit finish that primer and paint love to stick too... The reason why they use a simlar product on abs bumpers on full size cars... It more important what kind of sealer and paint you use as there are an infinte amount of chemical reactions that can happen when we as modellers start mixing and matching paint products on our models... From crazing to full on cracking I have seen over time... Even on diecast models I've seen paint flake off... I'd like to see you address this issue in the model car world not many people seem to want to share their paint failures that happen over long periods of time.
