Hello... A friend from my orchid club asked me to watch your channel and you do have some v interesting orchid topics. My zygos grow really well in Glen Waverley under 50% shade cloth below my hanging dendrobiums 9no black spots). I think free air movement is key no black spots. They do love water.

I just watched a video from the KZbin channel of the nursery Orchidweb, that was about Zygopetalum triste and in it they said that black spots are caused by a lack of water and can be avoided if you never let the substrate fully dry out. They seem to know what they are talking about, because the leaves of the plants in the video were so pristine that there wasn’t even an example of black spots to show the viewers.

Hello Matthew, the growth on that Zygo is incredible!! I only have one in my collection presently because I want to see how she grows in my care, I've only had her for about 7 months, but so far she is doing very well! Looking forward to seeing your seedling Zygo when she blooms.

I've heard the urban myths about the difficulties about growing them and I admit it did put me off, especially when there are so many other more compliant orchids to branch out into. You might have talked me into trying one.

Like anything I think - once you figure out the right spot for your environment all's plain sailing!

One day I would love to see a video from you, showing your favorite orchid books... I think they are underrated and nearly impossible for me to find locally. I find I don't want to spend a lot of money on ordering a book I don't know much about or haven't been able to look at or have some real life reviews on. But the very few I've read are so very very very helpful and I wish I had more.

There aren't that many so it would be a very short video! My best finds have been in second hand shops.

@@helloplantlovers that's okay cause there arent many period. But I wish there were more available. But we have entered a digital and technological world unfortunately
My few Zygos are only grown in the house. However, they all have the black spots on the leaves.

I have to chuckle because your sweater matches your orchid. Both have black speckles. 😂 I’m happy to know that this one seems to be doing well. I think I need to move mine to a different spot with more light. Mine was blooming when I bought it but it seems rather small. I may have to wait until next year for blooms.

Wonderful progress! It grows so well in your care, beautiful! Perhaps the Zygopetalum maculatum? ❤

that may actually be the species mackayi. The length of the spikes, size of blooms, the pattern, shape and the stripey lip all say mackayi to me. It could be a hybrid, but I am fairly confident it is the species. (Kew lists mackayi as a synonym of maculatum but I have plants bought as both mackayi and maculatum, mackayi is much shorter in stature than maculatum while the spikes and blooms are nearly identical - the blooms on mackayi sitting above the foliage and partially obscured in maculatum)

Brian & Wilma Rittershausen were siblings (not a couple as you might first assume) & they & their extended family have run Burnham Nurseries (probably the premier orchid nursery here) in the UK for 75 years now, so they know what they're talking about _but_ of course their culture advice is for the UK where from the sounds of it, is mostly cooler than Melbourne in winter. I don't think you could grow them outside year-round here. Freezing temperatures are commonplace throughout most of the UK for at least _some_ of the winter, with the south western tip having a milder climate where you might escape freezing temps most years.

I just bought a zygopetalum today (at 50% off) because it has two manky flowers and a bud, but it is the same as yours. And mine has a label. It is Zygopetalum 'Jumping Jack'.

Hello! I subscribed to your channel and today I saw old video about jewel orchids. My question is: what in your opinion can cause jewel orchids leaves curved inward? Thank you in advance
@helloplantlovers4 ай бұрын
Not sure I'm afraid - could be climatic - or not enough water - or too much water - depends how and where and in what you're growing them. Process of elimination generally.

It's in a mix of out of the bag orchid mix which has medium bark and grit in it, a little regular potting mix and a little organic material.

Greetings from Kentucky Matthew. I have one Zygo QF Amanda "B" (Zesty Kaila x Jumpin Jack)-Clone. I bought it in bloom two years ago. It put on two new growths last year and one new growth this year. I grow it indoors. It's potted in a 4" plastic pot in grow stones & I believe lava rock. It's in a room near a west facing window and close to a grow light. I keep it moist and less so in the winter. I feed it with seaweed extract & Cal-Mag weekly weakly. OK, it won't flower. Three new growths, two from last year and one from this year. They are big and healthy growths, but no flower spikes. It is in a bright to medium lit room. Any idea why I can't get it to bloom? Thanks, James
@helloplantlovers4 ай бұрын
Well....as you can see I'm NO Zygo expert!! And growing indoors is so very different to my experience. All I could suggest is that it needs more light, especially if its vegetatively growing so well. The other thing could be the medium; as a terrestrial they do like a more earthy medium with some organic matter but still free draining. Try giving it more light first though. Good luck!
@JamesBrown-i2e4 ай бұрын
@@helloplantlovers Thanks Matthew. I wish that I could grow my orchids outside, but the climate in Kentucky is not the best. It rains nonstop with flooding in the Spring. It's incredibly hot and humid (95-100 degrees F) in the summers with limited rain and freezing cold (sometimes 10 below zero F) in the winters. I do have 4 vandas outside & a stanhopea (which has a spike!). They have to come in the house by November until May. I will try another grow light on my Zygo and maybe next spring repot in a terrestrial orchid mix. Happy orchid growing! James
