I’ve been using a system like this for over 10 years for my internet use in my pole barn. Can watch my smart tv and use KZbin with my ROKU STICK. Can also use it to stream music to my Bluetooth speaker in my overhead led shop light. The unit I use is manufactured by TP-link and doesn’t require Ethernet cable. Speed is a lot slower than inside the house, but works great for what I need.

Greetings: I like the idea of teaching the child about things by disassembly, identification and organization. Qualities most adults do not learn. He will know more at 10 than most will their life. Good job. I applaud U. Thx 4 the share.

this is brilliant for home automation/monitoring. I have the same one service-> child panel setup with a metal building... don't feel like laying conduit and cable. This makes so much more sense. EVEN BETTER- I can finally put that baddy security camera on top of the light pole next to the coop! and watch chickens/control heaters/lights etc inside the coop. Sorta too cool. Love you got young ones wrenching. How I spend my years any chance I got- still do.

I head to KZbin for just about everything. Mostly auto/appliance repair. When I saw this video, you got another sub. I need something in the shop. Plugin wifi extender doesn't do it. I just spent over a half hour on the phone with 3 different people, besides the first robot, asking my internet provider how much to run a cable 100 feet. I hung up after the fourth transfer. thanks for the info and idea. these things are great and i have the tp-link version in my shop. a big gotcha is that besides not plugging the powerline adapter into a surge suppressor, it also will not work in a GFCI. the tp-link docs say it has to be on the same electrical circuit, ie breaker and that is not the case. they never mention the gfci part. it works on a non gfci, non surge processor outlet off my shop subpanel which is about 130ft from my house panel. i get about 15mb up/down which is good enough for my needs. and ya, trying to watch how-to vids on a cell phone with greasy fingers is not fun.

I tried a powerline adapter and that didn’t work for my shop. Our well house is a secondary shop that it worked for for a short time but when it stopped I needed a new plan. For the garage shop that has metal carports that block the signal I ran cable for an access point device. For the well house shop I was able to use a mesh service. Those linked with my Starlink internets service has given me fantastic service all over the main part of our property 😊

I wish I would have watched your video 3 days ago. I had not Wi-Fi in the metal building. I would have to walk outside just to get a call. Yesterday, I mounted my new flat screen. I bought one with basic functionality. I didn't want to spend too much because we had no Wi-Fi. I just hooked up a HD antenna. I did get a good picture on 35 channels. I also depend on having the computer in my shop. So, I bought a TP link Wi-Fi antenna, I also picked up a usb extension so I could run the antenna through a small hole in the side of the garage. The antenna works great. I mounted a small plastic box on the outside of the garage for my cell phone. No cell service in the metal building. I use a bluetooth speaker to answer my cell. Next weekend we will work on the stereo. I will be waiting for your next video. An outhouse fit for a king.....

Heads up: the speeds you get through powerline can be slower (but still useable) especially if your house is old. And you can sometimes use these on surge protectors, some surge protectors work with them, some don't. It's worth a try.

Wow, what a fantastic idea Lucus! Unfortunately, our cable company charges you for every TV hooked up on your property. Our cable bill is already far to expensive, so this won`t be very wise for me to do in my garage. I do have a very powerful WiFi unit set up in the house. I get a great signal on my lap top in our metal garage, which is approximately 75ft away from the house. I suppose i could stream it to a big screen TV in the garage, but the cable company would find a way to cheat us for having it.

Mine is close. Only about 100’ of wire, but I had someone comment that they used this setup on a building 200’ away and it worked for them. Good luck!

So, I want to be able to get wifi in the garage at my apartment complex but I doubt my apartment shares the same electricity as my garage, right? In this case, this approach wouldn't work, right?

I put links in the description of the video. Distance doesn’t matter as long as they are served by the same electrical service…at least that’s how I understanding.

Great video, just a couple of questions. Does your garage run off of a subpanel? In the garage, did you plug the ethernet cable into the WAN or a LAN port on the router/modem? Did you set up the modem as an access point or just as a second SSID?

My garage is a subpanel from the main house. As far as the internet, I don’t know much about the other stuff. I simply plugged the Ethernet cable into one of the ports on my existing router in the house and it worked.

Greetings: A cheap "surge protector" should B OK 2 plug in the cient unit. Most cheap"Surge protectors" and strips that do not disply notice of EFI / RFI protection should pass the RF signal 2 the client. The voltage surge components have nothing 2 do with EMI and RFI. I would not trust cheap "surge protector" strips. They R generally a 1 time use and not effective on many types of surges. Thx 4 the share.
