the setting of the film in Algiers makes sense. This movie premiered two years before the bridge started taking westbound traffic so that part of New Orleans was very isolated and clannish filled with many Cajun characters.

I think this was a very telling scene in the movie. He realizes that she has been kept from school and basically a prisoner by Lasado. It helps him understand why she was trying to escape. I loved this movie. I saw it at the theatre and I think their love scene was fantastic. Both Richard and Kim gave good performances.

Yes your so right…the injustice of her being sold and was never allowed to learn to read is a (key clutch ) moment for Richard Gere as it dawns on him when she almost drank the bad water because she couldn’t read.

My favorite movie! I truly think that Gere had THE BEST chemistry ever with Kim. I have seen this movie many times, and it always feels like a new one. It droves me in to it, every time! Its unique music, its dark atmosphere, the explosive chemistry betwwen the leads, the BEST erotic scene i have seen in a film ever, and a great ending. This scene, where he realizes she told him the truth (that she was owned by Losando, and she is not a hooker) is THE BEST scene of the film. I think this is the moment he relizes that he loves her, and decides to free her also...

wow this is also my most favorite scene in this movie,this one and also the one in the end after the fire where he asks her to live with him.....i was surprised when i saw the person who uploaded it also thinking that....great minds think alike lol

It was only when I saw this scene did I understand the previous scene where she tried to drink the water from the house, while ignoring the warning sign above. And he stopped her saying "can't you read!" Really heartbreaking to see her struggle to write her own name. If they ever make a remake of this movie I hope they go more into her past life and the reality of her situation.

This is basically the only outstanding scene in this movie - Gere-character discovering the horrible truth about Basinger-character. The rest of the movie is quite average.
